After My Alpha Rejected Me for My Best Friend Novel Cover

After My Alpha Rejected Me for My Best Friend

At 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred witnesses, Alpha Parker turned his back on me mid-ceremony and rejected me as his mate and Luna. The mark on my neck went cold, then hollow, as if the bond had been scooped out and replaced with air. My wolf, silent for years, collapsed deeper into the void—not a whimper, just gone. The severing tore through my chest, leaving me rejected and stranded in a pack that no longer wants its Luna.

Chapter 2

He taught me the rhythm first. Three taps, pause, two taps—timed to the gap between guard rotations, when the corridor above went quiet for four minutes and eleven seconds before the next boot fall. I learned it by counting his breathing through the crack in the silver wall.

"Now," he whispered, the first time I got it right.

I pressed my mouth close to the gap. Cold radiated off the metal, but I'd stopped flinching from it days ago. Pain was just weather now. "Harlow Sanders," I said. "Luna of Shadowthorn. Former Luna." The word tasted like rust. "He said it in front of three hundred wolves. 'I, Parker Jenkins, Alpha of Shadowthorn, reject you, Harlow Sanders, as my mate and Luna.' Word for word. I've got the whole thing memorized. I've got a lot of things memorized."

A long pause. I imagined him on the other side, still as stone, recalculating again.

"Go on," he said.

So I did. I gave him guard rotations, feeding schedules, the names of every Beta and Gamma still loyal to me versus the ones who'd already reoriented toward Valentina like compasses finding new north. I gave him the date Parker had been quietly circulating through his inner circle for a Mate Ceremony—six weeks out—and the list of regional Alphas already sent formal invitations to witness Valentina's installation. I'd helped draft half those invitations myself, back when I still believed in the life I was building.

When I finished, he was quiet long enough that I thought the guards had come back early.

"Your name," he said finally. "Say it again."

"Harlow Sanders."

"Mine is Pierce." A beat. "I've been in this den three years."

Three years. I pressed my palm flat against the silver, as if I could feel the shape of that through the metal.

"Your scent," he said, slower now, like he was choosing each word off a shelf. "Wildflower. Moonlight underneath it. That's not an Omega's scent, Harlow. It's not even a common wolf's."

My fingers found the scarred collar tucked in my wrist bracer without my telling them to. My mother's. The only piece of her I'd carried out of that burned-down life and into this one. I didn't answer him. But something in my chest, something that had been curled up and silent since I was sixteen, shifted.

Over the days that followed, the whisper code became a language. I learned the sound of Pierce's careful honesty—he told me he was the Lycan Prince, presumed dead, that his uncle Truett had forged his death certificate and buried him alive in a body that still worked. He described the silver-burn scars on his forearms with the same flat precision he used for troop movements, like his own suffering was just another data point. I never once heard him ask for sympathy. I never once heard him lie.

I told him what I'd built the Mate Ceremony into, in my head, turning it over like a blade: not romance. Consolidation. Parker needed Valentina marked and installed before any Lycan tribunal could challenge the transfer of my bloodline territory. Every day that passed was a day closer to it being permanent, irreversible, legal.

"We're the same kind of buried," I told him once, and he didn't argue.

Somewhere in that stretch of days, I started hearing the others. Two cells down, a low, dry voice that belonged to a wolf named Wade—former Delta, wolf shattered by silver exposure after he'd challenged his Alpha over the treatment of Omegas. He measured time in shift changes, not days. "Nine hundred and forty-some rotations," he told me once, when I asked how long. "Give or take. Lost count around year two."

And further down, near the far wall, a voice that broke and reformed without warning—Morgan, who spoke in fragments, repeating her own last word under her breath like she was checking it hadn't been stolen. "Cold," she'd whisper. "Cold. Cold." Then nothing coherent for hours.

Something cracked open in my chest listening to them. This wasn't only about Parker anymore. It was about the machinery that made Parkers possible—the dens, the silence, the guards who wouldn't meet your eyes.

On the eighth night, Pierce laid it out plainly. "I have a man on the inside. Silas Creed. He's been loyal to me the whole three years, waiting for a signal. I have contacts outside who've never accepted I was dead. You give me Shadowthorn's architecture. I give you a way to burn it down—legally, publicly, permanently."

"One condition," I said.

"Name it."

"I don't get smuggled out like a body someone rescued. When I walk into a room full of Alphas again, it's on my own feet."

The silence that followed had weight to it. Then, low and certain: "Agreed."
