Chapter 2

The Shadowcrest border smelled like pine and cold earth.

I crossed it at first light with Buster tucked against my ribs and my packed bag slung over one shoulder. The moment my feet touched Lycan territory, something in my chest loosened. Not relief. Not yet. Just the faint, animal recognition that I had stopped running toward something and started running home.

The estate gates were already open.

My father stood at the top of the stone steps. King Robert Blackwood, Alpha of Alphas, ruler of the Lycan Court — and the man who had called me "little wolf" since I was six years old and took my first shift in the training grounds behind the main house.

He wasn't wearing his formal robes. Just a dark sweater and boots. His silver ring caught the early light.

He said my name. Once. Quiet.

"Rosalie."

I walked up those steps and into his arms, and for the first time in three years I let myself be held without making myself smaller to fit. My father's hand came up to the back of my head. His other arm locked across my shoulders. He smelled like cedar and old leather and safety.

I didn't cry. I had cried myself empty in the car somewhere past the Ironvale border. But I let my forehead rest against his shoulder and I let him hold the weight I had been carrying alone.

"I felt it," he said into my hair. "The moment it snapped. I had your chambers ready."

Of course he did.

Buster squirmed between us and licked my father's wrist. Robert pulled back just enough to look down at the scruffy little wolf-dog with one scarred ear.

"Still keeping strays, I see."

"He kept me," I said.

My father's mouth tightened. He looked at me for a long moment — the kind of look that took inventory, assessed damage, calculated costs. Then he stepped aside and gestured toward the open door.

"Come inside. You're home."

---

My chambers were exactly as I had left them three years ago.

The four-poster bed with the deep blue canopy. The bookshelves along the east wall. The wide window that overlooked the training grounds and the forest beyond. Someone had lit the lamps. The fire was already going in the hearth.

I set Buster down. He immediately claimed the armchair by the window.

I stood in the center of the room and felt the space settle around me. Three years in Ironvale I had lived in quarters that smelled like Zander's cologne and someone else's choices. This room smelled like lemon oil and old paper and me.

I pulled the suppressant vial from my jacket pocket.

It was small. Glass. The pale green liquid inside had kept my Lycan aura locked down for three years. One dose every morning. Prescribed by the Lycan Court healer under my father's orders the day before I left for Ironvale.

I walked to the window. Opened it. Threw the vial as hard as I could into the forest.

I heard it shatter somewhere in the underbrush.

Then I sat down on the edge of the bed and I waited.

It took maybe five minutes.

The aura unfurled slowly at first — a warmth behind my sternum, spreading outward like ink dropped into water. Then faster. My wolf, Aurelia, stretched inside me with a sound that was half-growl, half-sigh. The silver-white light of my Lycan blood bloomed through the room. The lamps flickered. The air thickened.

I tipped my head back and let it come.

It felt like breathing after three years underwater.

---

Zander woke to silence.

I didn't know this yet — wouldn't know it for days, until Marcus defected and brought me the full accounting — but I learned later what that morning looked like from inside Ironvale.

He reached for the mind-link the way he had reached for it every morning for three years. The space where my presence used to hum, low and steady, like background noise he had stopped noticing.

Nothing.

He tried again. Harder. Pushed against the bond with his Alpha will, the way you push against a door you expect to give.

Still nothing.

The bond was gone. Not dormant. Not suppressed. Gone. Severed cleanly at the root, the way a formal rejection severs it — no scar tissue, no ghost connection, just absolute silence where a mate used to be.

He sat up in bed. Leighton was still asleep beside him, one hand resting on her flat stomach in that performative way she had practiced.

He stared at the wall.

Then he laughed. A short, sharp sound. He told himself Rosalie would be back within the week. Omegas didn't survive alone. She had no pack, no resources, no allies. She would crawl back and beg to be let in, and he would make her beg properly this time.

He got dressed. Called a pack meeting for that afternoon. Sent word to the pack house staff to prepare for Leighton's formal Luna installation ceremony.

Only half the pack showed up to the meeting.

The ones who did wouldn't look at him.

---

Three days later, the letters started arriving.

The first was from the Greenvale Pack. Formal. Polite. Regretful.

*Due to unforeseen changes in alliance structures, we must formally withdraw from our territory-sharing agreement with Ironvale, effective immediately.*

The second was from the Ironclaw warrior training academy. Same tone. Same devastating brevity.

*We are unable to continue our recruitment partnership at this time.*

By the end of the week, there were six.

Zander summoned Marcus to his office and threw the letters across the desk one by one.

"Fix this."

Marcus picked up the first letter. Read it slowly. Set it down. Picked up the second.

His face was very calm.

"Every one of these relationships," Marcus said carefully, "was brokered through channels we no longer have access to, Alpha."

Zander's jaw worked. "What channels?"

Marcus looked at him.

The silence stretched.

"The ones Rosalie maintained," Marcus said finally.

Zander's hand slammed down on the desk. "She was an Omega. She didn't maintain anything."

Marcus said nothing. He set the last letter down, aligned it neatly with the others, and stood.

"Is there anything else, Alpha?"

Zander stared at him. At the careful neutrality in his Beta's face. At the thing Marcus wasn't saying out loud.

"Get out," Zander said.

Marcus left.

Zander sat alone in his office and looked at the letters spread across his desk like accusations.

And for the first time since Rosalie walked out, something cold touched the back of his mind.

What if she didn't come back?
