Chapter 3

I learned about Leighton's performance later, from Marcus, who heard it from a pack house maid who heard it through the door.

Apparently she waited until Zander came back from a failed call with the Stonepine Pack. Apparently she was already on the bedroom floor when he walked in, knees folded under her, both hands wrapped around her flat stomach, her face wet with the kind of tears you can produce on command if you have practiced enough.

"The stress," she sobbed. "Zander — the baby — I can feel something is wrong — "

He dropped to his knees beside her. Of course he did.

"I need it settled," she said, gulping air. "I need to know I'm safe. I need to know the pack is mine. If I lose this pup because you waited — "

She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't need to.

He moved the ceremony up. Two weeks. Signatory access to the accounts the same day.

The maid said Leighton walked him to the door afterward, kissed his jaw, locked the bolt behind him. And then — for one half-second, before her face rearranged itself — she smiled. A small, cold, satisfied thing.

The maid told Marcus. Marcus told me. I filed it where I file everything now: in the cold quiet part of my chest that does not move.

---

Marcus arrived at Shadowcrest on a gray Tuesday morning.

I was in the east library with Buster asleep across my feet when one of my father's guards came to the door and said, very carefully, that Beta Marcus of Ironvale was at the gate, asking to speak with the King and the Princess.

Not the Luna. The Princess.

So he knew. Or he had guessed. Either way, he had come anyway.

My father was already in his study when I got there. He was standing behind his desk, hands folded behind his back, looking out the tall window at the training grounds. He turned when I came in.

"You should be here for this, little wolf."

I sat in the chair beside his.

Marcus was shown in a minute later. He had driven through the night, I could see it in him — the tired set of his shoulders, the way his Beta posture held even when his eyes were rimmed red. He carried a leather satchel against his chest like it was something fragile.

He stopped three steps inside the door and bowed. Deeper than a Beta bows to a King. Deeper than I had ever seen him bow.

"Your Majesty. Princess."

My father gestured to the chair across the desk. "Sit, Marcus."

He sat. He set the satchel on the desk. He opened it with the careful hands of a man who has rehearsed this motion in his head for days.

"I kept records," he said. His voice was flat, Beta-efficient, stripped of everything except the work. "From the Princess's first month at Ironvale. I didn't know why at the time. I just knew what I was looking at was extraordinary, and I thought someone should write it down."

He slid the first page across the desk.

My father picked it up. Read it. Passed it to me.

Warrior recruitment, year one. Twenty-two names. Every one of them a contact I had pulled from the Lycan Court roster and routed through a series of cutouts so they would arrive at Ironvale looking like organic interest. Beside each name, in Marcus's neat hand, the date the recruit arrived, the training tier they came from, and a small notation: *origin untraceable through standard pack channels.*

The second page. Treaty language. The Greenvale agreement. Marcus had marked three clauses in the margin — *Lycan Court diplomatic phrasing, see Shadowcrest treaty 1987.*

The third page. The fourth. The fifth.

Three years of my quiet hands on Ironvale's spine, laid out in chronological order in another person's writing.

I read through it the way I had learned to read through anything — without expression, without breath. But somewhere around page nine, when I saw the entry for the winter Zander had thrown a celebration for himself after the Ironclaw partnership came through, my thumb went to the inside of my wrist.

I caught it. Stilled it. Set my hand flat on the arm of the chair.

My father saw. He always saw.

He turned the silver ring on his right hand. One slow rotation. Then he set his palm flat on the desk beside the ledger and the room went very, very quiet.

"Marcus," he said.

"Your Majesty."

"You will have sanctuary at Shadowcrest. Effective immediately. Quarters in the east wing. Whatever you need."

Marcus's throat worked. "Thank you, Your Majesty."

"And this ledger — " my father rested two fingers on the open page, light, almost reverent — "will be filed with the Lycan Court as registered evidence within the week. Every page. Every signature. Every date."

Marcus closed his eyes for a second. Just one. The Beta posture held, but I saw what it cost him to keep it.

"I should have spoken sooner, Princess," he said.

I looked at him. At the satchel. At three years of my invisible work made visible by the one wolf in Ironvale who had been paying attention.

"You spoke now," I said. "That is what matters."

My father turned another page. The Pack Summit was six weeks out. I could feel him already arranging the chessboard in his head, piece by piece, the way he had been arranging it for three years.

The ring on his hand caught the gray light from the window.

He did not turn it again.
