Chapter 2

I tried the mind-link at dawn.

I lay in the healing wing bed, eyes open, and reached for it the way I had ten thousand times before—that warm, humming thread that connected me to every wolf in Ironveil, to the allied packs, to the network I had spent sixteen years helping to build. It was as natural as breathing. I had sent comfort through it after territory attacks. I had sent warnings. I had once sent the news of a pup's birth to thirty packs at once and felt the joy come back like an echo.

I reached for it.

Nothing.

Not static. Not resistance. Just—absence. A door that had been bricked over so cleanly you couldn't even find the frame.

I tried again. Softer. The way you try a locked door a second time even when you know.

Still nothing.

I let out a slow breath through my nose and stared at the ceiling. He had severed it. My own pack connection, the one I had rights to by bond and by rank, cut off like a phone line. I was lying in the heart of my own territory and I was completely, surgically alone.

My wolf made a sound low in my chest. Not a howl. Something smaller. The sound an animal makes when it understands the size of the cage.

I did not let myself sit with it long. Grief was a liquid. I had already decided that.

I turned it into something with edges instead.

---

Graham came back that afternoon to confirm the terms.

He stood in the doorway this time, not even bothering to come inside. Ophelia had stepped out. We were alone.

"Tribunal is in three days," he said. "You've had time to think."

"I've thought," I said.

He waited.

"I'll do it," I said. "I'll stand before the Council. I'll say what you need me to say." I kept my voice flat. Not defeated—flat. There's a difference, and I needed him to hear the one he was looking for. "But I want to see my mother before it starts. One visit. Alone."

Something moved across his face. Not suspicion. More like calculation—running the numbers, checking for risk, finding none. I watched him decide I was broken enough to be safe.

That was his mistake. Not the only one he'd make, but the first one that would matter.

"Fine," he said. "Tomorrow morning. Thirty minutes."

"Thank you," I said.

I said it like I meant it. That was the hardest part.

He left without another word. I listened to his footsteps move down the corridor and disappear, and then I lay very still and began to count what I had.

Thirty minutes. Alone. In my mother's room.

It wasn't much. It was enough.

---

Nora started appearing on the third day.

I noticed her the way you notice something that's been carefully arranged to look accidental. A Gamma doing corridor rounds in the healing wing—not unusual. Except her rounds kept bringing her past my door at the same time each evening. And the reports she left with the duty nurse were always slightly more detailed than a Gamma's station required. Patrol logs with timestamps down to the minute. Supply inventories with handwritten margin notes.

She never looked directly at me through the window. That was how I knew she was being deliberate.

On the fourth evening, there was no report. Just a small package on the floor outside my door, wrapped in a maintenance uniform, the kind the cleaning staff wore. Folded tight. Left where the corridor camera had a blind spot—I knew that blind spot because I had approved the camera placement myself, years ago.

I waited until the corridor was empty. Then I reached down and picked it up.

Inside the uniform, wrapped in a square of cloth: a recording device. Smaller than my thumbnail. The casing was matte black with no markings, but I recognized the build. Council-grade. The kind that couldn't be detected by a standard pack sweep.

I held it in my palm for a long moment.

I didn't ask where it came from. I didn't need to. Nora had been watching this pack for years with eyes she was never allowed to use fully, and she had chosen her moment with the same quiet precision she used on those corridor reports. She wasn't offering me sympathy. She was offering me a weapon, which was the only thing I actually needed.

I closed my fingers around it.

Tomorrow morning I would sit with my mother. I would hold her hand and tell her something true, something I hadn't let myself say out loud yet. And before I left, I would place this small black device on the shelf beside her bed—next to the photograph she kept there, next to the pressed flower from the garden she used to tend before her wolf gave out.

Rylee went to that room. I had seen it in the visitor logs Nora's reports included, buried in the margin like a footnote.

I set the device on the mattress beside me and lay back.

Three days.

Graham had given me thirty minutes and thought he was giving me nothing. He had never understood that I was the kind of woman who could build a territory from the margins. He had watched me do it for sixteen years and still hadn't understood what he was watching.

That, more than anything, was going to cost him everything.
