Chapter 2

The pain hit like a freight train made of ice and fire.

The severed bond tore through me in waves — each one worse than the last, each one pulling something vital out through the cracked mark on my neck. My knees gave out. I felt the porch boards slam into my palms, felt the rough wood splinter under my fingernails as I tried to hold myself upright.

I couldn't.

My vision went white at the edges. The world narrowed to the wet heat spreading down my collarbone — silver, I realized distantly, not red — and the sound of Corey's wolf howling somewhere behind the static in my ears.

Then something else broke open.

Not the bond. Deeper than that. Older.

It felt like a door I didn't know existed had been kicked off its hinges from the inside. A pressure built in my chest — enormous, ancient, furious — and I couldn't breathe around it. My ribs creaked. My spine arched. I tried to scream and nothing came out except a sound that wasn't human.

The shift hit me like a detonation.

Bone cracked and reformed. Muscle tore and rebuilt itself in the space between heartbeats. My skin split and silver fur erupted through it — thick, metallic, catching the early light like liquid mercury. I felt myself grow. Expand. The porch boards splintered under paws I didn't recognize as mine.

I was massive.

I knew it the way you know you're standing even when your eyes are closed. The world looked different from this height. Smaller. Every wolf in my line of sight looked smaller.

The aura came next.

It rolled off me in a wave I didn't generate and couldn't stop — a pressure so absolute it didn't need sound. Sovereign. That was the only word for it. Not aggressive. Not a threat. Just fact.

Damon Holt's other knee hit the porch.

I heard the Gamma's fist slam into gravel behind the truck, his breath punching out like he'd been gut-shot.

The border warrior twenty yards out dropped his patrol bag and went down hard, forehead to the dirt, like his body made the choice before his brain caught up.

I didn't command any of it.

My wolf — this wolf, this thing inside me that had never existed until thirty seconds ago — simply stood there. Didn't snarl. Didn't pace. Didn't need to.

The morning rearranged itself around us.

I turned my head — slow, deliberate — and looked at Corey.

He was still pressed against the porch railing where the bond-break had staggered him, one hand clutching his chest, his face the color of old snow. His wolf was howling. I could feel it through the dying threads of what we'd had, a sound like something essential tearing in half.

But he wasn't looking at his wolf.

He was looking at me.

At this.

His mouth opened. Closed. No sound came out. His eyes were too wide, pupils blown, the kind of wide that comes from seeing something that rewrites every assumption you've built a life on.

I held his gaze.

Held it until I watched comprehension crack across his face like ice under weight. Until I saw him understand — really understand — what he'd dismissed for three years.

Then the wolf receded.

The shift reversed as fast as it had come. Fur melted back into skin. Bone compressed. The aura pulled inward like a tide going out, and suddenly I was just Everleigh again — human, small, shaking — collapsing onto the porch boards in a body that felt like it had been wrung out and left to dry.

The silver blood was still warm on my neck.

I heard Corey take a step forward. The board creaked under his boot.

"Don't." My voice came out raw. Barely a whisper. "Don't you dare."

He froze.

I didn't look up. I couldn't. If I looked at him now, I'd see the expression I'd been waiting three years to see — shock, regret, the dawning horror of a man who'd just realized what he'd lost — and I knew, bone-deep, that if I saw it now it would feel like nothing.

Worse than nothing.

It would feel late.

I pressed my forehead to the porch boards and focused on breathing. In. Out. In. The wood smelled like rain and old varnish. My neck throbbed. My whole body throbbed. Somewhere behind me, Damon Holt was still on his knees, breathing like he'd run a marathon.

Nobody spoke.

The sun crept higher. A crow called from the tree line. My heartbeat slowed, degree by degree, until it was almost normal again.

I don't know how long I lay there.

Long enough that when I finally heard the second truck — Sunny's truck, the engine I'd know anywhere — pull into the gravel drive, it felt like waking up from a dream I couldn't quite remember.

I heard her door slam. Heard her boots hit the ground at a run.

"Everleigh!" Her voice cut through the morning like a blade. "Ev, I'm here, I've got you—"

She was on the porch in seconds, dropping to her knees beside me, hands already moving — checking my pulse, my breathing, the cracked mark on my neck that was still seeping silver in thin, sluggish trails.

"Wolfsbane salve," she said, not to me. To someone behind her. Ty. I heard him moving, fast and efficient, no wasted motion. A bag unzipped. Glass clinked.

Sunny's hand cupped the back of my head, gentle and sure. "I've got you," she said again, quieter this time. Just for me. "You're okay. You did it. You're okay."

I wasn't okay.

But I was out.

Sunny tilted my head to get a better angle on the mark. I felt the cool shock of the salve — wolfsbane and something else, something that numbed on contact — and the bleeding slowed. Stopped.

"Damon." Sunny's voice went flat. Hard. I knew that tone. She used it on enemies. "If you report this to him before she wakes up, I will personally ensure the Lycan Council hears about every deferred marking date on record. Do you understand me?"

Silence.

Then Damon's voice, rough and low. "Understood."

I heard him stand. Heard his boots on the porch steps. Heard him walk away.

Corey didn't follow.

I felt him still standing there — ten feet away, maybe less — radiating a grief so thick I could taste it even through the severed bond. He wanted to say something. I could feel the shape of it in the air between us, the words building and collapsing before they reached his mouth.

He said nothing.

Eventually, he left too.

Sunny wrapped a blanket around my shoulders and helped me sit up. Ty ran a silent perimeter check, circling the safe house in widening loops, checking for witnesses, for threats, for anything that might need handling.

I leaned into Sunny's shoulder and closed my eyes.

The wolf inside me — the silver wolf, the one I hadn't known existed until it tore its way out of my chest — was still there. Quiet now. Watchful. Waiting.

I didn't know what it was.

I didn't know where it came from.

But I knew, with a certainty that lived in my bones, that I was never going back.
