Chapter 3

I woke up to the smell of wolfsbane salve and the sound of Sunny sharpening a blade.

The safe house was dark except for the oil lamp on the table. My neck throbbed — a dull, persistent ache where the mark had cracked open and bled silver. I touched it carefully. The skin was sealed now, rough under my fingertips like scar tissue that had formed too fast.

"You're awake." Sunny set the blade down and came over, checking my pulse without asking. Her hands were warm. Steady. "How do you feel?"

I opened my mouth to answer and something else spoke first.

*They called us wolfless. Look at what we are.*

The voice came from inside my chest. Low. Fierce. Unmistakably mine and not mine at all.

I sat up too fast. The room tilted.

"Easy." Sunny's hand steadied my shoulder. "Your wolf?"

I nodded. Couldn't speak yet. The voice was still there, resonating in the space behind my ribs like an echo in a canyon I'd never known existed.

*My name is Ash,* the wolf said. *And we are never going back.*

Ash.

I tested the name silently. It fit. It felt like it had always been there, waiting.

"She has a name," I whispered.

Sunny's expression softened. "Good. That's good, Ev."

I tried to stand. My legs shook. Before I made it two steps, the shift hit me without warning — a surge of pressure in my chest, my spine arching, fur erupting down my arms in a silver wave I couldn't stop.

"Breathe." Sunny was in front of me instantly, hands on either side of my face, forcing me to meet her eyes. "Look at me. Breathe with me. In. Out. You control the shift. Not the other way around."

I focused on her voice. On the rhythm she set. In. Out. In.

The fur receded. Slowly. My hands were human again.

I collapsed back onto the cot, shaking.

"That's normal," Sunny said, like we were discussing weather. "New wolves are volatile for the first few days. Especially ones that awaken under trauma." She sat beside me. "We're going to train this. You and me. Until you can shift on command and hold your form as long as you need to."

I looked at her. "How long will that take?"

"As long as it takes."

---

By dawn, I'd managed three controlled shifts. Three times I called Ash forward deliberately, held the form for thirty seconds, and returned to human without collapsing. It wasn't graceful. But it was controlled.

Ty ran perimeter checks while we trained, circling the safe house in silence. I watched him through the window during one of my recovery breaks. He moved like someone who'd run these patterns a thousand times, efficient and unhurried.

When he came back inside, Sunny handed him a water bottle before he asked for it.

He took it. Drank. Set it down on the table exactly where she could reach it later.

They didn't say a word to each other.

I felt something twist in my chest watching them. Not jealousy. Worse than that. Recognition. This was what it was supposed to look like. The bond as infrastructure. As reflex. As something so woven into daily logistics that it didn't need performance.

Corey and I had never had that.

Not once in three years.

I'd thought the problem was timing. That we just needed the marking ceremony to make it real. But watching Sunny and Ty move around each other like two parts of the same organism, I understood with brutal clarity: the marking ceremony wouldn't have fixed anything. It would have just made the neglect permanent.

Ash stirred inside me. *He never honored us. Not once.*

No. He didn't.

"I'm leaving Ironvale," I said.

Sunny looked up from the blade she'd gone back to sharpening. "I know."

"You know?"

"I've known for a week." She tested the edge with her thumb. "I packed a go-bag for you six days ago. It's in my truck."

I stared at her.

She shrugged. "You're my best friend, Ev. I know what your face looks like when you've made a decision you're not saying out loud yet." She set the blade down. "Where are you going?"

"Silvercrest," I said. The name came out before I'd fully decided. But once I said it, I knew it was right. "It's the largest pack on the eastern seaboard. Lycan Crown protection. If I'm going to rebuild, I'm doing it somewhere no one can touch me."

Sunny nodded slowly. "Silvercrest doesn't take refugees lightly. You'll need leverage."

"I have leverage." I thought of Ironvale's crumbling border patrols, the gaps in the schedule Corey never bothered to learn, the intelligence I'd been holding together with both hands for three years. "I know every weak point in Ironvale's defenses. That's worth sanctuary."

Ty, who'd been silent until now, spoke from the doorway. "That's worth more than sanctuary. That's worth rank."

I looked at him.

He met my eyes. "Don't go to Silvercrest as someone who needs saving. Go as someone they need."

---

The messenger arrived on the third day.

I was mid-training with Sunny — practicing holding my wolf form while moving, which was harder than it sounded — when I heard the truck pull up outside.

Sunny's head snapped toward the window. "Ironvale messenger," she said flatly.

I shifted back to human and pulled on the shirt I'd left on the porch railing. My hands were steadier now. Three days of training had given me that much.

The messenger was young. Barely twenty. He stood beside his truck holding a bouquet of wildflowers and a sealed envelope with Corey's handwriting on the front.

He saw me and straightened. "Miss Parker. Alpha Anderson sends his—"

"Take them back," I said.

He blinked. "I'm sorry?"

"The flowers. The letter. Take them back." I didn't raise my voice. Didn't need to. "Tell him I said no."

The messenger looked at the flowers. At me. At the flowers again. "He said it's important. A revised marking date—"

"I don't care what it says." I stepped off the porch. Ash stirred inside me, a low rumble of warning the messenger definitely felt. His hand tightened on the bouquet stems. "The bond is severed. There is no revised date. Go home."

He left the flowers on the hood of his truck and drove away fast.

I watched the dust settle on the road.

Sunny came up beside me. "He'll come himself next."

"I know," I said.

And three days later, he did.
