Chapter 1

The mate bond went cold at 9:47 p.m., between the third and fourth verse of the ceremonial song.

I was standing at the altar in a dress I'd sewn myself — ivory silk, hand-stitched seams, a neckline cut low enough to show where Corey's marking bite was supposed to land. I had measured that neckline twice. I'd wanted him to see exactly where to bite.

He wasn't there.

The hall was full. Every ranked wolf of the Ironvale Pack stood in their ceremonial clothes, watching me wait. The cake I'd baked that morning — three tiers, lavender honey, the kind he said he liked — sat on the long table by the window. Untouched.

Then it hit.

Through the open mind-link every bonded wolf shared on ceremony night, I felt him. Not his words. His pleasure. A deep, helpless inhale at the territory border, the kind a man takes when a woman he's been hungry for steps out of a car. Mira's scent — cedar and cheap perfume — flooded through the bond like he'd opened a window on her himself.

The half-formed mark on my neck went cold first. Then empty. Like a door closing in a house no one lived in.

I heard the Gamma's breath catch behind me. The Beta — Damon Holt — went so still I could hear his ceremonial belt creak. Nobody looked at me. Not one of them. Seventy ranked wolves and not a single pair of eyes.

I counted to ten in my head.

Then I walked to the table, picked up the silver fork, and took one bite of the cake I'd baked for my own marking. It tasted exactly the way I'd meant it to. Lavender. Honey. A little salt at the finish.

I set the fork down. Tines aligned with the plate's edge.

"Excuse me," I said, to no one in particular, and walked out of the hall.

---

The chambers smelled like him. Three years of him — sandalwood and pack-house smoke and the soap he never remembered to replace. I opened the closet and started folding.

A shirt. Crease, crease, square. Next.

My hands did not shake. I made sure they did not shake. If they shook now, they would shake later, and I had decisions to make later that required steady hands.

I took only what I'd brought into this pack house three years ago. The cashmere coat my mother left me. The boots I bought with my own money before I met him. Two books. The leather-bound journals I'd kept every single day of those three years stayed exactly where they were on the shelf, spine-out, alphabetized by month.

Let him read them. Every postponed promise, every "soon, baby," every Tuesday he forgot what day it was. I'd written it all down in handwriting as even as a metronome, because I had been even and unhurried for three years, and I wanted him to see what that looked like in ink.

The ceremonial dress I left puddled on the bed.

I drove out before dawn. Safe house at the edge of Ironvale territory — Sunny had given me the keys six months ago without asking why I might need them. She'd just pressed them into my palm and said, "For when."

For when.

My neck throbbed the whole way there. Cold-sick, like ice water under the skin. The half-formed mark didn't know it was dying yet. My body did.

I didn't sleep. I sat on the porch in his oversized hoodie — the one thing of his I'd kept, and only because it was warmer than mine — and watched the sky turn the color of a bruise healing.

---

He came at sunrise.

I heard his truck before I saw it. Heard the boots on gravel. Smelled her on him from twenty feet away — Mira's scent layered into his collar, his cuffs, the soft skin behind his ear where I used to press my mouth. He hadn't even showered.

He didn't shower.

"Ev." He came up the porch steps like he'd come up them a thousand times. Easy. Owned. "Hey. Look. Last night got — complicated. Mira's situation — it's a long story." He rubbed the back of his neck. Smiled the smile he used at pack dinners. "We'll reschedule the marking next moon. Full ceremony, the whole thing. I'll have Damon restore your Luna access this morning, okay? Clean slate."

No apology.

Not one word about the mind-link. About what every bonded wolf in that hall had felt go through him while I stood at the altar in white.

I looked past him. Damon Holt had followed at a distance, eyes on the porch boards. The Gamma stood behind the truck. A border warrior had stopped twenty yards out, frozen mid-step with a patrol bag still on his shoulder.

Three ranked witnesses. Exactly enough.

I stepped down off the porch into the wet grass.

"Ev?" Corey's smile flickered. "What are you—"

"I, Everleigh Parker," I said, and my voice did not shake either, "reject you, Alpha Corey Anderson of the Ironvale Pack, as my mate."

The bond detonated.

The half-formed mark on my neck split open like a seam pulled too tight — I felt the heat of it, the wet of it, silver running down my collarbone in a thin bright line. My knees buckled. I locked them.

Corey staggered backward into the railing, one hand clutching his chest, his face going gray. His wolf howled inside him, raw and unhinged, loud enough that I felt it through the dying threads of what we'd had.

Behind him, Damon Holt's knee hit the porch boards with a crack he did not choose to make.

The Gamma's fist pressed into the gravel.

And somewhere underneath my ribs, in a place I had never felt before, something else opened its eyes.
