Chapter 3

The night air carried a chill as I paced outside Sarah's apartment building. My phone buzzed with another notification—Callan Spencer was at the Silverfang Pack borders. I hadn't expected him to arrive so quickly.

"Are you sure about this?" Sarah asked, her eyes wide with concern.

"I'm not sure about anything anymore," I admitted. "But I need to know."

The drive to the border took fifteen minutes, but my heart raced as if I'd run the entire way. What was I doing? Had I lost my mind, posting that ridiculous message?

And yet, something pulled me forward—a strange tug I couldn't explain.

When I arrived, he was waiting. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair that caught the moonlight. Even from a distance, his presence commanded attention.

"Hazel," he said, his voice deeper than I remembered.

"Callan." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "You didn't have to come all this way."

"I had to." His eyes never left mine as he stepped closer.

That's when it hit me—his scent. Pine and petrichor—the earthy smell of rain on dry soil. It enveloped me like a forgotten memory suddenly recalled.

Luna surged forward so violently I gasped. *Mate. Our mate.*

My knees weakened as my wolf, dormant for so long, suddenly roared to life inside me. She clawed at my consciousness, desperate to reach Callan.

"Hazel?" His voice was urgent, concerned. He'd stopped several feet away, respecting my space even as his eyes flashed with recognition.

"You feel it too," I whispered.

He nodded slowly. "I've been waiting for you."

The words hung between us, heavy with meaning. Waiting for me? All these years?

"How is this possible?" I asked. "We've known each other since we were pups."

"Some bonds are worth waiting for." His voice was gentle, but I could hear the Alpha underneath—controlled power that made my wolf purr with approval.

"I need to get you somewhere safe," he said. "Somewhere quiet."

I nodded, unable to form words as Luna continued to circle inside me, finally awake after years of weakness.

---

Morning light filtered through unfamiliar curtains. I sat on the edge of a plush bed in what appeared to be a guest apartment in Blood Moon territory. Callan had been nothing but respectful, arranging this space for me without pressure or demands.

But I knew what I had to do.

I closed my eyes and reached for the pack mind-link that still connected me to Silverfang.

*Declan.* I pushed my thoughts through the link, feeling his surprise at my contact.

*Hazel.* His response was cold, controlled. *This little tantrum is beneath you.*

*I'm not coming back.* The words flowed easier than I expected. *Our chosen mate tie is severed.*

His anger flooded the link, hot and sudden. *You're being ridiculous. Where are you?*

*That doesn't matter.* I kept my mental voice steady despite Luna's growls. *What matters is that I'm done.*

*Your weak wolf needs me,* he snarled. *You'll come crawling back when you realize what you've thrown away.*

I could almost see him—pacing his office, Alpha aura flaring with indignation that anyone would dare reject him.

*Goodbye, Declan.*

I severed the link with a decisive snap, blocking his furious attempts to reopen it.

---

The pack mind-link hummed with activity later that afternoon. I'd forgotten to block the general channel in my haste to settle in.

"Attention everyone!" Isabel's voice rang through the link, sweet and smug. "Alpha Declan has graciously invited me to move into the Alpha's private guest floor!"

My stomach clenched as Luna snarled in disgust.

"The Alpha feels I need special protection," she continued, her mental voice dripping with false innocence. "He says I'm too valuable to the pack to risk anything happening to me."

I could practically see her preening as pack members responded with congratulations and questions.

"Isn't that where Hazel used to stay?" someone asked.

"Oh yes," Isabel replied, her satisfaction evident. "But Alpha Declan says I need more care and attention than she ever did."

I blocked the channel with a savage mental push, cutting off her chatter.

"She's not worth your energy," Callan's voice came from the doorway. He leaned against the frame, watching me with those intense eyes.

"How did you know?" I asked.

"I heard." He stepped into the room, his movements controlled but predatory. "Word travels fast between packs."

"She's moving into your space," he added, his voice dangerously soft.

I met his gaze steadily. "It's not my space anymore."

Something flickered in his eyes—approval, perhaps. Or something deeper.

"No," he agreed. "You have a new space now."

Luna stirred restlessly inside me, drawn to his presence like a moth to flame.

"And what exactly does that mean?" I whispered.

His smile was slow and confident. "It means, Hazel Reed, that your life is about to change in ways you never imagined."
