Chapter 4

The morning sunlight streamed through the windows of the Blood Moon Pack's meeting room. I sat across from Callan and his Beta, Marcus Reid, trying to ignore the whispers that had followed me since I'd arrived three days ago.

"Hazel Reed," Marcus said, his voice formal but kind. "We're honored to have you consider joining our pack."

I straightened my shoulders, feeling Luna stir inside me. Since that first night with Callan, my wolf had grown stronger, more present than she'd been in years.

"Thank you for welcoming me," I replied, meeting his gaze steadily.

Callan's eyes never left my face. "Marcus will walk you through the transition process, but I want you to know that your comfort is our priority."

The room was deliberately calm—no crowds, no overwhelming scents, no Alpha auras pressing down on me. Callan had arranged everything with my panic disorder in mind.

"Some packs might question your... situation," Marcus continued carefully. "But we respect your decision to leave Silverfang."

"My decision is final," I said firmly. "I'm not going back."

Callan leaned forward, his pine and petrichor scent wrapping around me like a protective embrace. "I intend to court you properly, Hazel. No rushing, no assumptions."

Luna purred inside me, responding to his words with a warmth that spread through my chest.

"Court me?" I whispered.

"You're my fated mate," he said simply. "But that doesn't mean I expect you to jump into a marking ceremony. We have time."

The contrast between his patience and Declan's decade of empty promises wasn't lost on me.

---

Later that afternoon, I scrolled through my phone and froze. Isabel had posted a new photo on Crescent Moon Social—her petite frame draped in what was unmistakably Declan's Alpha shirt, the silver embroidery catching the light as she posed in his office chair.

"Look at me, I'm the new Luna!" she'd captioned it.

Luna snarled inside me, but surprisingly, I felt no pain—only a distant annoyance, like a fly buzzing too close to my ear.

"What's wrong?" Callan asked, appearing in the doorway.

I turned the phone toward him. "Nothing important."

His eyes darkened as he took in the image. "She's trying to provoke you."

"Let her try," I said, surprising myself with how little I cared.

Instead of responding to Isabel's post with anger or jealousy, I found myself smiling. Callan watched curiously as I opened the camera app.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Making a statement," I replied.

I gestured for him to come closer, and he obliged without hesitation. His warmth radiated against my side as I snapped a photo of us together—him looking ruggedly handsome, me smiling genuinely for the first time in days.

"Ready?" I asked.

His eyes searched mine. "For what?"

"To make it official."

I posted the photo with a simple caption: "Excited to announce my upcoming Mating Ceremony with Alpha Callan Spencer of the Blood Moon Pack. #NewBeginnings #TrueMate"

His thumb brushed over my knuckles. "You're sure about this?"

"Completely," I whispered.

---

In the Silverfang Pack house, Ryan Torres stood before Declan's desk, his Beta status giving him the courage to speak when others wouldn't.

"The pack is in chaos, Alpha," he said firmly. "Hazel's departure has created unrest, and Isabel's... behavior isn't helping."

Declan's eyes narrowed. "What are you suggesting?"

"Isabel moving into your private quarters was premature," Ryan continued carefully. "And her posts on the pack link—"

"Are none of your concern," Declan snapped.

"With respect, Alpha, they are when they affect pack morale," Ryan insisted. "Hazel was respected by many. Her sudden departure and Isabel's immediate promotion has created whispers."

"Whispers?" Declan's voice dropped dangerously low.

Before Ryan could respond, Declan's phone buzzed. He glanced down and froze.

Ryan watched as all color drained from his Alpha's face. The phone trembled slightly in Declan's hand as he stared at the screen.

"What is it?" Ryan asked cautiously.

Without a word, Declan turned the phone toward him. On the screen was my post—smiling beside Callan, announcing our upcoming ceremony.

"She's really done it," Declan whispered, his voice hollow.

Then, as Ryan watched in alarm, something dark and possessive flashed in Declan's eyes.

"She can't have him," he growled. "She's mine."

Ryan took a step back, suddenly concerned for his Alpha's mental state. The Declan before him was no longer the controlled leader of Silverfang—he was a wolf whose pride had been shattered.

And nothing was more dangerous than an Alpha with wounded pride.
