Chapter 2

Four days passed before Ben mind-linked me. Four days of smiling at Mason across the breakfast table, of asking about patrol routes I no longer cared about, of lying beside him at night with my back turned and my wolf pacing behind my ribs like something caged.

*Training ground. Before dawn. Come alone.*

That was all he sent. I was already dressed.

The old training ground sat half a mile past the packhouse, abandoned since we'd built the newer facility closer to the barracks. Weeds had grown up through the cracked earth. The moon was still out when I got there, low and thinning toward morning, and Ben was waiting with a folder pressed flat against his chest like he didn't trust the wind to leave it alone.

"Walk me through it," I said. No greeting. I didn't have one in me.

He nodded once and opened the folder on the flat stone we used to use for sparring drills.

"Apartment on the eastern edge. Modest building, human-owned, cash rent. Both scents are on the lease-holder's mailbox—hers primary, his underneath, masked but there if you know what you're smelling for." He slid a photograph toward me. A door. Ordinary. Beige paint, a potted plant, nothing that should have meant anything. "I got inside twice. Once when she was at the packhouse with you. Once when he was on patrol."

"And?"

"Men's clothes in the closet. His size. His cologne on the collars." He didn't look away from me when he said it, and I understood that was deliberate—he wasn't going to let me pretend I hadn't heard. "Toys. A child's bed. I got a hairbrush from the bathroom. Ran it against a sample I already had on file from a training incident years back—Mason's blood, from the border skirmish with Thornfield."

He didn't need to finish the sentence. I finished it myself, in the silence of my own skull, where it would live from now on.

"How old," I said. Not a question. A demand for the exact shape of the wound.

"Five. A boy. Ryder."

The wind moved through the dead grass. I stood very still and let it.

"There's more," Ben said, and something in his voice changed—dropped lower, careful in a way that told me he'd debated whether to say it at all. "I cross-referenced dates. The earliest scent-marking in that apartment goes back almost six years."

Six years. I did the math without wanting to. Six years ago I had been lying in the Healer's den with wolfsbane poison working through my blood, my whole body convulsing with a pain I'd never felt before or since, and Kenzie had been there. Kenzie had held the bowl while I retched. Kenzie had wrung out cloths and pressed them to my forehead and told me, *I've got you, I'm not going anywhere,* while I sobbed that I would never carry a pup.

That was when it started.

Something in my chest folded in on itself, quiet and total, like a door closing somewhere far away. I didn't cry. I didn't ask Ben to stop. I only said, "How much of the treasury?"

He slid the ledger across the stone.

I opened it. Numbers in his careful, blocky handwriting, matched against disbursement categories I recognized because I'd approved half of them myself, never questioning the line items marked *territory maintenance* or *supply contingency*. Tens of thousands. Over years. Enough to buy an apartment, furnish it, keep a child fed and clothed and hidden for five years, all funded by a pack that trusted its Alpha with its coin the same way I had trusted him with everything else.

I closed the ledger.

"Keep digging," I said. "I want dates. I want receipts. I want every scent sample documented and dated so it can't be disputed later."

"Later," Ben repeated, watching me carefully.

"Yes." I looked at him, and whatever he saw in my face made him go still. "There will be a later."

I walked home before the sun came up, and my wolf clawed at the inside of my mind the entire way, low sounds that weren't quite howls, grief with nowhere to go. I didn't let her out. I didn't let her have even that.

By the time the packhouse stirred, I was dressed for the morning training review, hair pinned, expression arranged into the same warm competence I'd worn for seven years. I greeted every warrior on the field by name. I asked after Delta Marsh's injured shoulder. I reviewed the supply roster with the quartermaster and caught a discrepancy in the grain order that saved us four hundred dollars, and I smiled when he thanked me, and none of it touched the thing that had opened in my chest at dawn.

That night, after Mason fell asleep beside me, I took out a second notebook—not the Luna ledger everyone knew about, but a plain one, unmarked, the kind you could buy at any human drugstore. I wrote the date. I wrote *M. away—E. Ridge patrol, reported 6 hrs, verified 4.* I wrote *K. unavailable—'migraine.'* I matched it against Ben's timeline, against the treasury dates, against six years of small absences I had never once thought to question because I had never once thought I needed to.

I closed the notebook and turned off the light.

Beside me, Mason slept peacefully, one arm still slung across the space where he assumed I would always be.
