Chapter 3

The hardest part wasn't the anger. Anger would have been clean, simple, something I could have used. The hardest part was the smile.

I practiced it in the mirror every morning before dawn, before anyone else stirred. The same warm, competent expression I'd worn for seven years. Lips curved just enough to seem genuine. Eyes soft but not vacant. The face of a Luna who had no idea her entire world had already collapsed.

It fit like a mask I'd been wearing so long I'd forgotten it wasn't my real face.

Three weeks after Ben handed me that folder, I was still performing. Pack dinners beside Mason, his hand resting casually on my lower back the way it always had. Training reviews where I corrected Delta formations and praised improved technique. And Kenzie—Kenzie was the hardest. She came to the packhouse twice that week, brought coffee the way she always did, hugged me at the door with that familiar jasmine-heavy perfume that now made my wolf bare her teeth behind my ribs.

I hugged her back. I smiled. I asked about her mother's arthritis and listened to her complain about a leaky faucet in her apartment—the apartment I now knew Mason had paid for with embezzled pack funds.

"You're such a good listener," she said, squeezing my hand across the kitchen table. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'll never have to find out," I said, and meant every word in a way she would never understand.

She left smiling.

I went to the study and added the date to my notebook. *K. visit—2:15-3:40 p.m. M. away, border inspection. Scent: jasmine, layered fresh.*

My wolf paced. She wanted blood. She wanted to shift and tear and make them both understand what they'd done in a language older than words. I kept her leashed. Not yet. Not until the ground was so solid beneath me that nothing they did could shake it.

That night, Mason came home late again. I was reading in bed when he slipped under the covers, and I felt him pause—just a beat, just long enough that I knew he was checking whether I was awake.

I kept my breathing even. My eyes closed.

He relaxed. Rolled over. Within minutes his breath deepened into sleep, and through the mate bond I felt his consciousness drift away, unguarded and easy.

I opened my eyes in the dark and stared at the ceiling.

I had been thinking about the full moon. About the mountain cabin we used to visit when we were younger, before Luna duties and Alpha responsibilities ate up every spare hour. It had been years. And it was exactly the kind of romantic gesture that would convince Mason everything was fine—that I suspected nothing, that I was still his devoted, trusting mate.

I waited until morning. I made coffee. I brought him a cup while he reviewed patrol reports at the dining table, and I set it down gently beside his elbow.

"I was thinking," I said, keeping my voice light. "The full moon is in two weeks. What if we took a few days at the cabin? Just us. No pack business. No interruptions."

He looked up, surprised. Then his face softened into something that might have been relief. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." I smiled. "We haven't done that in forever. I miss it."

He reached for my hand and pulled me down into his lap, arms circling my waist, and I let him. I even laughed when he buried his face in my neck, right over the mate mark he'd given me seven years ago.

"I miss it too," he murmured against my skin. "I miss you."

The lie was so easy for him. So reflexive.

I kissed his temple and said, "Then let's go."

---

Two weeks. I had two weeks to prepare, and I used every single hour.

Ben worked in the shadows while I worked in plain sight. He tracked Mason's movements, cross-referenced mind-link timestamps, pulled archived treasury records going back six years. I reviewed the ancient mate contract—the one every Alpha and Luna signed before the Moon Goddess and the pack, the one that included clauses most wolves had forgotten existed because they were never supposed to need them.

The Infidelity Clause. Section VII, Subsection 3: *Should the Alpha be found in violation of the sacred mate bond through provable infidelity, the Luna may invoke dissolution and claim pack governance pending a loyalty referendum.*

I read it until I had it memorized. Then I started building my case.

The Pack Alliance Banquet was three months out. Every neighboring Alpha would be there. Witnesses. Authority. The kind of public forum where a challenge couldn't be buried or dismissed. I needed that stage. But first, I needed the votes.

Sixty-five percent. That was the threshold for a loyalty referendum—the number that would strip Mason of his Alpha title and transfer governance to me, not as his widow or his regent, but as the pack's chosen leader in my own right.

I started with the warriors.

Not the ones in Mason's inner circle—those were already lost, too entangled in his authority to risk questioning it. I went to the ones I'd trained beside at dawn for years, the ones who'd watched me correct my own form until my muscles screamed, who'd seen me take hits in sparring and get back up without complaint.

I approached each one alone. In the archives. In the old training ground. In quiet corners where conversations wouldn't be overheard.

"I need to ask you something," I said to Elena Voss, a senior she-wolf who'd been with Crimsonpine longer than I'd been alive. We were standing in the records room, late afternoon light slanting through the narrow windows. "And I need you to hear me all the way through before you answer."

She studied me. She'd always been sharp. "Go ahead."

I told her. Not everything—not the apartment, not Ryder, not the full shape of the betrayal. Just enough. The treasury discrepancies. The scent evidence. The Infidelity Clause.

"I'm invoking my right under the mate contract," I said quietly. "But I can't do it without the pack's support. I'm asking for your loyalty oath. Not to me as Mason's mate. To me as your Luna."

She was silent for a long time. Then she said, "How many do you have?"

"Enough to start. Not enough to finish."

She nodded slowly. "You'll have mine. But Aurora—" She stepped closer, voice dropping. "If you're doing this, you can't hesitate. The second he knows, he'll come at you with everything he has."

"I know," I said. "That's why he won't know until it's too late."

By the end of the fourth week, I had twenty-three oaths. Signed. Witnessed by Ben. Locked in a safe-deposit box in the human town thirty miles south, where no pack member would think to look.

Forty percent.

I needed twenty more.

---

The morning we left for the cabin, Mason was in a good mood. He loaded our bags into the SUV, kissed me in the driveway where half the pack could see, and drove us up the winding mountain road with one hand on my knee.

I watched the trees blur past and thought about loyalty oaths. About the banquet. About the exact wording I would use when I stood in front of every Alpha in the region and destroyed him.

My wolf was finally quiet. Not calm—never calm—but focused. Waiting.

"You okay?" Mason asked, glancing over.

I smiled at him. "Perfect," I said.

And for the first time in weeks, I almost meant it.
