Chapter 3

By Wednesday, Zain had a room.

I heard it from Greta, who runs the packhouse kitchens and has never once lied to me in eleven years. She told me carefully, the way you tell someone about a diagnosis. Third floor, east wing. The room that used to store linens. Someone had moved a bed in, then a desk, then a set of shelves, and hung the Reynolds crest above the headboard like the boy had been born under it.

I didn't go look. I didn't need to. I could smell the change in the air the moment I walked into the packhouse that afternoon — cedar polish, fresh paint, the particular scent of a household rearranging itself around a new center of gravity.

Elijah introduced him at the noon meal. I wasn't there for it, but I heard about it within the hour, the way you always hear about things in a pack this size. He'd put his hand on the boy's shoulder in front of the ranked wolves and said, *this is Zain, he's family,* like family was a word that could be assigned rather than earned. Dorothy had been standing at his elbow. She'd already started using the phrase *inheritance clarification* to anyone who'd listen, saying it with the smooth, patient cadence of a woman reading from a script she'd written months ago.

I watched the pack sort itself in real time. Small things. The Silvermoon-blooded warriors — men and women whose grandparents had come to Crescent Hollow because of my mother's mother — grew quiet in the training yard, watchful, careful about where they stood when Elijah walked through. Dorothy's people grew louder. I heard, secondhand, that someone had started saying I was taking it well, that my silence was a kind of grace, that the Luna understood tradition even when it cost her.

Let them think that. I attended the Tuesday council of elders. I greeted every warrior by name at the morning drills, the way I always have, and I asked after their mates and their pups and their mothers' health, and I did not let my voice change once. I was not being gracious. I was waiting for a piece of paper that had not yet arrived.

Chloe found me that night in my dressing room, standing in the doorway in her nightgown with her arms crossed over her chest like she was holding herself together.

"Am I still the heir?" she asked.

No preamble. That's my daughter — she has never once wasted a question.

I set down my hairbrush and turned. "Yes."

"Is it because something's wrong with my blood?" Her voice didn't shake, which was worse than if it had. "Is that why he picked the other boy? Because mine isn't good enough?"

I crossed the room and knelt in front of her, taking both her hands in mine. They were cold. I held them until they weren't.

"There is nothing wrong with your blood," I said. "Your blood is mine, and mine is older than this pack, older than his family's name. What happened was done to us. It was not because of us." I made her look at me. "Do you understand the difference?"

She nodded, slow, like she was turning the words over to check their weight. Then she leaned into me, and I held her, and somewhere under my ribs Selene moved — not the hard upward lurch of grief, not the growl. Something warmer. Something that felt, for the first time since the altar, like standing guard rather than bleeding.

Dorothy came the next afternoon with honey cakes on a plate she'd brought herself, wrapped in a cloth like an offering.

"Just a peace conversation, dear girl," she said, settling into the chair across from mine like she owned it. "I thought it was time we spoke, woman to woman."

I poured the tea myself. Two cups. I let her talk.

She talked for eleven minutes — I counted, out of habit — about tradition, about the pack's strength, about how a Luna's true grace was knowing when to *step back* from certain territorial responsibilities, just until Zain's inheritance was formalized, just to keep things from getting ugly in front of the elders. She used the word *ugly* twice. She called me dear girl twice, and both times her eyes went to my hands, like she was checking whether I still had the strength to hold a teacup.

I let her finish. I did not argue a single point.

"I appreciate you explaining your intentions so clearly, Dorothy," I said, setting my cup down without a sound. "It's very helpful."

She smiled, satisfied, and reached for a honey cake.

She had no idea what she'd just handed me. I already had the recording running on the phone in my lap, and somewhere in Vermont a courier was three days from delivering a sealed writ with my mother's crest pressed into the wax.

Dorothy left happy.

She should not have.
