Chapter 4

The training yard was full when I saw her.

She stood at the tree line, just past where the grass gives way to scrub, close enough that the morning wind carried her scent into the yard — warm, sweet, worn-in, the same thing I'd caught on Elijah's collar for weeks now, except this time it wasn't a trace. It was deliberate. She had dressed for it. A pale coat, hair loose, and around her throat a piece of silver worked into crescents and knotwork that any Silvermoon-blooded wolf in that yard would recognize on sight, because it was cut from the same pattern language as the ceremonial pieces in my own jewelry box upstairs.

Not mine. Not exactly. But close enough to make every trained eye do a double take.

The drills slowed. A Delta named Aaron missed his footing entirely and had to be corrected by his partner. I watched the murmur travel through the ranks the way water finds the low ground — quick, quiet, unstoppable.

Elijah was on the far side of the yard, running formation checks with the Gammas. He saw her. I watched him see her. His jaw tightened for half a second, and then he turned back to his clipboard and said nothing, called no one over, sent no one to the tree line to ask her to leave pack grounds.

He let her stand there. He let two hundred wolves watch her stand there in a piece of jewelry that whispered *Luna* without saying it outright.

*She is wearing what is ours,* Selene said. The words came up hot, pressing behind my sternum like a held breath.

*Not for long,* I answered, and I did not break stride. I finished walking the length of the yard with my clipboard against my hip, checking off names on the morning roster the way I have every Tuesday for a decade, and if my pen pressed a little harder into the paper than it needed to, no one saw it but me.

The courier came at noon. Sealed, Council crest, my name only.

I read it standing in the front hall, coat still on. Not a rejection. A request — supplementary evidence required, direct blood-scent sample from the minor identified as Zain Reynolds, to be certified against Elijah's registered Alpha bloodline for formal bond-treason review.

I folded the letter once and went straight to the packhouse laundry.

Greta was sorting linens when I came in, and she didn't ask what I wanted. She just tipped her head toward the far bin. "Boy's things came down an hour ago. Training tunic's still got his morning scent on it, if that's what you're after."

I didn't ask how she knew. Eleven years, and Greta has never once needed things explained to her twice.

The tunic was small, black and red, unwashed. I lifted it with the sealed tongs from my healer's kit — the same kit my mother gave me the year I qualified, the one I have used to identify poison, verify parentage, confirm a hundred small sacred facts over the years — and I folded it into the certified container without letting my bare skin touch the fabric even once. Chain of custody has to be clean. I have built my whole life on things being clean.

I wrote the declaration standing at Greta's folding table, my handwriting steady, and sealed it with the wax and the Silvermoon crest. By evening it was in the courier's hands, headed north.

The petition was no longer a request. It was, now, a case.

Elijah found me in the herb garden at dusk, among the rosemary beds, where I go most evenings because the plants don't ask me anything.

His scent reached me before he did — thinner than last week. Noticeably thinner. Like a color fading out of cloth left too long in the sun.

"Rosie." He stopped a few feet off, hands loose at his sides, but there was nothing easy in his voice now. "I need to ask you again. About the blend."

I kept my eyes on the sprig in my hand, turning it, checking the leaf for rust. "What about it."

"A Delta challenged me today." His voice dropped, and something young came into it, something scared. "Twice this week. Cole. He wouldn't have looked at me sideways six months ago." A breath. "Something's wrong with my scent, Rosalie. You'd know. You always know."

I set the rosemary down on the flat stone beside the bed. "Bloodlines are what they are, Elijah. I've always believed that."

I didn't look up when I said it. I didn't need to. I heard the silence that followed, felt it land somewhere behind his ribs the way words land when a man is starting, just starting, to understand what he's standing in.

When I did look up, the warmth had drained clean out of his face.

He reached for my wrist — the old reflex, the one that used to work.

I took one step back. Precise. Measured.

The distance between us closed into something absolute, and neither of us said another word.
