Chapter 2

He sent word through his Beta at half past ten. The Alpha requests your presence in the study.

I finished the paragraph I was writing in my journal first. Then I capped my pen, smoothed my skirt, and went.

The study smelled like cedar and old leather and, underneath both, that same borrowed warmth I'd caught on his collar in the kitchen. He'd been in here recently. Not alone.

Elijah was standing at the window when I came in. He turned with his hands open at his sides — a gesture I recognized, the one that meant *I am being reasonable, please be reasonable with me.* He'd used it the first time I asked why pack funds were running short. He'd used it the time I asked why he missed Chloe's first shift ceremony.

I sat down across from his desk. I didn't cross my arms. I just waited.

"Rosie." He came around the desk, didn't sit. Preferred to stand when he needed height. "I know yesterday was — I know it was a shock. I should have told you differently. I should have found a better way."

I said nothing.

"The Moon Goddess corrects the bloodline when the bloodline needs it." He said it gently, like a man reciting something he'd rehearsed. "Zain is strong. His wolf is already showing. And Chloe — this doesn't have to take anything from Chloe. There's room for both of them in the inheritance, we can structure it so she—"

"How long?"

The question stopped him mid-sentence.

"How long?" I said again. Same tone. I wasn't angry. I was asking.

His hand moved to the back of his neck.

I had catalogued that tell nine years ago. Never mentioned it. Filed it the same way I filed everything — quietly, precisely, in a place he couldn't reach.

"It doesn't matter now," he said.

I nodded.

I stood up.

"Rosie—"

"Thank you for explaining." I smoothed the front of my dress. "I understand the situation."

I walked to the door and opened it and closed it behind me without a sound.

The hallway hit me like cold water. I made it four steps before she surged — a hard upward pressure through my sternum, the kind that steals the breath — and I put my hand flat against the wall and gripped the wainscoting until the plaster bit into my palm.

*He chose her from the beginning.* Low. Certain. The first full sentence she had ever given me. *We were never the choice.*

I stood there for a moment. Just a moment.

Then I let go of the wall, straightened my spine, and kept walking.

***

I waited until dark.

I didn't tell anyone where I was going. I took my own car, the gray one, not the Luna's vehicle. I drove without the headlights on the last quarter mile and parked off the road in the shadow of a tree line.

The border den was lit from inside. Warm yellow windows. A small house, well-kept, nothing extravagant — but the garden had been tended, and there were curtains in the windows, and a child's bicycle leaned against the porch rail.

I turned the engine off and sat.

Elijah was already there. I could see him through the window of the main room. He had his jacket off. He was standing behind Paulina with his hands on her shoulders, his face bent to her neck, and the ease of it — the absolute ease of it, the way a man moves in a space that is *his* — was the thing that found the second seam.

The first tearing had been at the altar. This was different. That one was shock. This one was comprehension.

He lifted Zain onto his shoulders. The boy grabbed at his hair, laughing. Elijah laughed back — a real laugh, loose and full, the kind I had not heard from him in years. I hadn't known I was waiting to hear it until I heard it coming from that window.

I sat motionless in the dark for fifty minutes.

I know it was fifty because I watched the clock on the dash. I needed something to look at that wasn't the window.

At some point Selene went quiet. Not gone — she was never gone now — just still. Waiting with me.

Finally I started the car.

I drove back without the radio. The roads were empty. My hands on the wheel were steady.

At my desk I opened the Lycan Council petition I'd started that morning. I read through it once. I attached the financial records — photographed, printed, dated, cross-referenced against the border coordinates. Forty to sixty thousand dollars a year for nine years. Hartline Provisioning. A house with curtains and a bicycle and a laughing child.

I reached into my desk drawer and took out the Silvermoon seal.

My mother had pressed it into my hands the morning I left for Crescent Hollow. *Keep this somewhere he can't reach,* she'd said. I had thought she meant safe. I understood now she meant ready.

I pressed the seal into the wax at the bottom of the document.

Then I folded the petition into its envelope, wrote the Council's address in my steadiest hand, and set it on the corner of the desk where I would see it first thing in the morning.

Outside, the pack grounds were quiet. Somewhere near the east perimeter, a wolf was running. I could hear the distant rhythm of paws on frozen ground.

I opened my journal and pressed a small dried flower flat against the page.

Then I wrote the date, and under it: *Filed.*
