Chapter 1

At exactly eight fifteen on a Friday evening, the bond at the base of my throat went ice-cold.

I stood on the stone dais in the only silk dress I owned, fingers resting on my mother’s moonstone pendant. I had waited three years for this ceremony. Three years of scrubbing kitchen grease, sleeping in an unheated room, and telling myself that Declan Gray’s neglect was just pack duty. But when Declan stepped into the hall's glare, he didn't smell like rain-soaked cedar anymore. He reeked of cheap, suffocating jasmine.

He didn't take my hand. He looked down at me like I was dirt tracked onto his rug.

"I, Declan Gray, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Zoey Matthews, as my mate and Luna."

The words struck like an axe.

The heat under my skin froze, then collapsed into a hollow, jagged emptiness, like a door slamming shut in an abandoned house. My wolf screamed in my head, a sound so raw my knees buckled against the floor.

Before his vow even finished echoing off the rafters, Declan turned.

Kylee Simpson stepped forward from the front row. Declan pulled her against his chest and buried his fangs deep into the side of her neck. Blood welled over his jaw, bright and thick. Kylee tilted her head back, baring the fresh bite to the crowd, her lips curling into a slow, vicious smile.

The invisible thread connecting my soul to his snapped like dry bone.

I hit the floor on my palms. Around me, two hundred pack members stood in dead, complicit silence. Not a single person moved. Not a single person spoke.

"Get her out of here," Laura Gray’s voice rang across the hall. Declan’s mother stepped forward, her mouth set in a thin, disgusted line. "Drag her out. Clear her cot from the basement. She doesn't sleep under this roof another night."

Two heavy-set pack warriors stepped forward, reaching down to grab my arms.

"Don't touch me," I rasped.

I ripped my arm back before the warrior's fingers could lock around my wrist. The pain in my throat was a burning crater, but I forced my legs straight. I pushed myself up, standing on my own two feet.

Declan frowned, his Alpha aura flaring to crush me. "Zoey. Leave quietly."

The pressure pushed against my skull like lead, but I didn't drop my head. I held his gaze until his own eyes flickered with irritation. Then I turned my back on him.

I walked down the central aisle, past the rows of elders and warriors who had eaten the meals I cooked and worn the clothes I mended. At the massive front doors of the pack house, I stopped.

I turned back to the dais. My voice wasn't loud, but in that silent room, every syllable hit like stone.

"For three years, I walked the eastern ridge every midnight to brew and set the wolfsbane perimeter," I said, looking straight at Declan. "Kylee doesn't know the recipe. Neither do you. The ward line ends tonight."

Declan’s face hardened, but I didn't stay to watch the panic set in. I turned, pushed through the double doors, and walked into the pitch-black woods.

I walked past the outer boundary stones, past the scent markers, crossing into the unclaimed territory where no pack laws could reach me.

The shock wore off two miles out, and the severance pain hit me full force. I leaned against an oak tree, clutching my chest, gasping for air that felt like broken glass.

Then, from the deep dark of my mind, a voice spoke.

It wasn't the weak whimper I had grown used to over three years of starvation and scraps. It was low, snarling, and burning with ancient fury.

*He was never worthy of us,* my wolf, Lira, growled. Her presence flared through my veins, hot and steady against the cold void Declan left behind. *We are still here. We are still whole.*

I pressed my back to the rough bark, breathing through the tremor. Lira wasn't broken. She had never been weak—she had only been suffocated by a bond that poisoned us day by day. I didn't shed a single tear for Declan Gray. If I felt a hollow ache in my chest, it was for the girl who had spent three years believing that enduring misery was the only way to be loved.

By three in the morning, I reached a forgotten, rotted timber cabin tucked inside a rocky gorge five miles beyond the border.

The front door hung off its hinges. The window was shattered. I went straight to work. I gathered strips of dry pine bark and packed them into the window frame with mud to cut the freezing wind. I pulled two dry ration bars from my pocket, forcing myself to chew and swallow even though my stomach twisted with phantom sickness.

My fingers rose to my neck. The mark was gone, replaced by a dull, dead scar. Below it, the smooth milky stone of my mother’s moonstone pendant rested against my collarbone.

I held the pendant tight in my fist, letting its quiet coolness steady my pulse. A melody drifted into my thoughts—a lullaby I didn't remember ever being taught, low and steady.

Lira curled behind my ribs, ears forward, eyes sharp, watching the dark with me.

Outside, the wind shifted from the east.

Across the dark miles of forest behind me, a sharp, two-tone iron horn echoed through the trees—Ironveil’s emergency alarm, screaming that the eastern perimeter had just fallen.
