Chapter 2

The regional Alpha Summit was held at a resort lodge in the White Mountains. Three hundred wolves from forty packs across the Northeast. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and the thick, layered scent of competing dominance that made my wolf press herself flat inside my chest.

I sat in the back row of the conference hall with the other support staff. Data analysts. Junior liaisons. Omega-level administrators who kept the machinery of pack politics running while the Alphas took credit on stage.

The program listed me as: *Cecilia Ford, Data Handler, Shadowpeak Pack.*

I stared at those words for a long time before the lights dimmed.

Alec took the stage to polite applause. He looked good up there. He always did. Confident. Commanding. The kind of Alpha people wanted to follow.

"Thank you all for being here," he began. His voice carried easily across the hall. "Today I'm honored to present a comprehensive alliance framework that will reshape how our packs cooperate on territory management, resource sharing, and security coordination."

I knew every word of what came next. I'd written it.

He clicked to the first slide. My data model. My territorial analysis. The framework I'd spent two years building, testing against every major pack structure in the region, refining until it was airtight.

"This work," Alec said, "represents a new standard for inter-pack collaboration."

He gestured to the side of the stage.

Rose Dixon walked out in a tailored dress that probably cost more than my car. Her heels clicked on the polished floor. She smiled at the assembled Alphas with perfect, practiced warmth.

"I'd like to introduce Rose Dixon," Alec said. "Daughter of Alpha Phillip Dixon of Ironcrest Pack, and my future Luna. Rose has been the chief architect of this framework, and I'm proud to have her strategic mind shaping Shadowpeak's future."

The applause was louder this time. Respectful. Impressed.

Rose took the microphone. "Thank you, Alpha Alec," she said. Her voice was smooth, confident. "I'm excited to walk you through the key components of this system."

She began presenting my work.

Slide by slide. Model by model. Every strategic insight I'd fought for, every compromise I'd negotiated, every territorial concession I'd mapped.

She spoke about them like she understood them. Like she'd built them.

Someone in my row leaned over. "She's good," they whispered. "Ironcrest must have great training programs."

I didn't answer. I couldn't.

My wolf had started keening. It was a thin, high sound that only I could hear—the sound of something breaking that couldn't be repaired. She pressed against my ribs like she was trying to crawl out of my skin.

*Stop,* I told her. *Be quiet.*

But she wouldn't stop. She couldn't.

On stage, Rose fielded questions from the Alphas. She answered some correctly—surface-level details she'd probably memorized. When someone asked about the underlying data methodology, she smiled gracefully and said, "I'd be happy to provide additional technical documentation after the session."

She didn't have that documentation. I did. It was in my laptop, in my quarters, in the encrypted files I'd never been asked to share publicly because my name was never supposed to be on any of this.

The presentation ended to standing applause.

Alec shook hands with Alpha Phillip Dixon in the front row. Rose descended the stage, accepting congratulations from pack leaders who wanted to be seen talking to Shadowpeak's future Luna.

I sat in the back row and watched my life's work get credited to someone who couldn't explain a single formula if pressed.

The session broke for lunch. People filed out, talking, laughing. I stayed in my seat.

My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against my thighs until they stopped.

Then I stood up, walked out of the conference hall, and went to my assigned room in the staff wing. I locked the door. Sat on the edge of the bed. Stared at the wall.

My wolf was still keening. Quieter now. Like she was running out of air.

There was a knock at the door three hours later.

I didn't move.

The knock came again. "Cecilia. It's me."

Alec.

I opened the door.

He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. His scent—pine and cold earth—filled the small room. It used to comfort me. Now it just made my wolf press herself flatter.

"That went well," he said. He was still riding the high of the presentation. I could see it in the set of his shoulders, the energy in his movements. "Phillip was impressed. Half the Alphas in that room want to adapt the framework for their own territories."

"Good," I said.

He looked at me. Really looked, for the first time since he'd arrived.

"You're upset," he said.

I almost laughed. It came out as a sound I didn't recognize.

"That was my work, Alec."

"I know that."

"You put her name on it."

"It was necessary." His tone shifted—still reasonable, but with an edge underneath. "Phillip needed to see his daughter positioned as a serious strategic asset. This alliance with Ironcrest is critical. You know that."

"I know I spent ten years building Shadowpeak's alliances," I said. My voice was very calm. Very quiet. "I know I nearly died in that rogue ambush shielding you. I know you promised me the Luna title and a marking ceremony. I know you've never kept that promise."

"Cecilia—"

"I know," I continued, "that I just watched you introduce another woman as your future Luna while I sat in the back row listed as a data handler."

His jaw tightened. "This is pack politics. It's not personal."

"It's my life."

"And you're part of this pack," he said. His voice was harder now. "Everything we do is for Shadowpeak's strength. That includes strategic positioning. That includes alliances. That includes making sure the right people are seen in the right light."

I turned toward the door.

He moved faster. His hand closed around my wrist. He pulled me back, spun me around, and pinned me against the wall.

His face was inches from mine. His eyes had gone dark—wolf rising to the surface.

"You're mine," he said. "The Moon Goddess chose us. That bond is sacred. You don't get to walk away because your feelings are hurt."

His head dipped toward my neck. Toward the unmarked space where a mate's bite should have been ten years ago.

I felt his breath on my skin. Felt his intention.

He was going to mark me. Right now. Without ceremony, without consent, without anything but his own need to reassert control.

I drove my elbow into his ribs. Hard.

He staggered back, surprise breaking his grip.

I stepped forward and hit him across the face with everything I had.

My palm connected with his cheekbone. The crack echoed in the small room. His head snapped to the side. When he looked back at me, there was blood on his lip.

We stared at each other.

My wolf had stopped keening. She was utterly, completely silent.

I took a breath.

"I, Cecilia Ford," I said, "reject you, Alpha Alec of the Shadowpeak Pack, as my mate."

The bond severed.

It wasn't clean. It was a tearing—a ripping of something that had been woven through every part of me for ten years. I felt it in my chest, in my wolf, in the space behind my ribs where the bond had lived like a second heartbeat.

The pain dropped me to my knees.

Alec went down too. He made a sound I'd never heard him make—raw, animal, broken.

I knelt on the floor, breathing through the agony, waiting for it to pass.

It didn't pass. But it dulled. Slowly. Slowly.

I stood up first.

Alec was still on his knees, one hand pressed to his chest, staring at nothing.

"Cecilia," he whispered.

I walked past him. Opened the door. Stepped into the hallway.

I didn't look back.
