Chapter 3

I drove back to the Shadowpeak pack house alone. The Summit hotel was two hours behind me. The severed bond was a constant ache in my chest—not sharp anymore, but deep. Like something vital had been scooped out and the space left behind didn't know how to close.

My wolf was silent. Completely, utterly silent. For ten years she'd been a presence in my mind—sometimes quiet, sometimes restless, but always there. Now there was nothing. Just empty space where she used to be.

I didn't cry. I'd done enough of that on my knees in that hotel room, waiting for the pain to stop being unbearable and become merely terrible instead.

The pack house was dark when I pulled up. Three in the morning. Everyone asleep. Good.

I parked in the back lot and let myself in through the side entrance. My key still worked. I wondered how long that would last.

The vault was in the basement, behind Alec's office. Restricted access. Only senior leadership and—technically—me, because someone had to maintain the files.

I used my code. The door opened with a soft click.

The vault was climate-controlled, meticulously organized. Rows of filing cabinets. Banker's boxes on metal shelves. A decade of strategic work. Alliance frameworks. Territorial analyses. Negotiation records. Security protocols.

Every document had my handwriting in the margins. My notes. My corrections. My late nights and early mornings and skipped meals.

None of them had my name on the cover page.

I started with the filing cabinets. I pulled out the Northridge alliance—the one I'd just signed. Three weeks of work. I dropped it on the floor. Then the Crescent Valley framework. The Riverbend accords. The Eastern Territories security matrix.

I worked methodically. Drawer by drawer. Box by box. I piled everything in the center of the vault floor until the stack was waist-high.

Then I went upstairs to the kitchen and found the long matches we used for the dining hall candles.

I lit the first match and dropped it on the pile.

The paper caught slowly at first. Then faster. The flames climbed, orange and hungry, consuming years of my life in minutes. The smoke detector started screaming. I didn't move. I stood there and watched it burn.

Footsteps pounded down the hallway. Someone shouted. The sprinkler system kicked on—too late. The documents were already ash.

I walked out past the gathering crowd of half-awake wolves in pajamas and confused expressions. No one tried to stop me. They were too busy staring at the smoke.

I went to my quarters. Packed one bag. Clothes. Laptop. The few things that were actually mine. It took less than ten minutes.

Then I did the hardest thing.

I reached for the mind-link—the pack bond that connected every Shadowpeak wolf to each other and to our Alpha. I'd been part of that link for ten years. It was like breathing. Automatic. Always there.

I severed it.

The silence was deafening.

I'd thought losing the mate bond was bad. This was worse. The mind-link wasn't just Alec. It was everyone. Every voice I'd grown used to. Every presence I'd relied on. Gone. All at once.

I stood in my empty room, surrounded by that terrible quiet, and felt more alone than I'd ever been in my life.

Then I picked up my bag, walked to my car, and drove away from the only home I'd known as an adult.

I didn't contact Alec. I didn't contact Georgina or Oscar. I didn't leave a note.

I just left.

---

I drove west. Highways and back roads and long stretches of nothing. I stopped at rest stops to sleep in my car, curled up in the back seat with my jacket as a blanket. I ate gas station food that tasted like cardboard. I didn't care.

The bond ache followed me. A phantom limb I couldn't stop reaching for. My wolf stayed silent. I started to wonder if she'd ever speak again.

Two days. That's how long it took to cross into Utah.

The landscape changed. The dense forests of the Northeast gave way to open desert. Red rock and scrub brush and a sky so wide it made my chest hurt.

I followed the directions I'd memorized from my research. South through the canyon country. Past small towns with names I'd never heard before. Deeper into territory that felt nothing like home.

The sun was setting when I reached Redstone land. The sandstone cliffs glowed the color of old blood. The air smelled different here—dry and clean, with a hint of sage.

Border patrol intercepted me five miles in. Two wolves in human form, flanking my car. I rolled down my window.

"Name and business," the taller one said. Not hostile. Just careful.

"Cecilia Ford," I said. My voice was hoarse from disuse. "I sent a transfer inquiry two weeks ago. Code RF-2747."

They exchanged a glance. The shorter one pulled out a radio. "We've got the transfer from the Northeast. Escorting her in."

They led me down a winding road that hugged the canyon wall. The central compound appeared around a bend—low buildings built into the rock, blending with the landscape instead of dominating it.

A man stood on the porch of the largest building. Tall. Sun-weathered. Relaxed posture. Next to him sat a golden-furred wolf, watching me with intelligent amber eyes.

I parked. Got out. My legs were stiff from two days of driving.

The man stepped forward. "Cecilia Ford?"

"Yes."

"Camden Anderson. Alpha of Redstone." He didn't offer his hand. Just studied me with calm, assessing eyes. "You've driven a long way."

"I have."

The wind shifted.

His scent hit me. Warm cedar and sunlit stone. Clean. Grounding. Nothing like the cold pine I'd lived with for ten years.

My wolf stirred. For the first time since the rejection, she moved. She lifted her head inside my chest and went very, very still.

Then she whispered one word.

*Mate.*

No. No. Not again. Not now.

I must have made a sound, because Camden's expression shifted. His wolf—the golden one at his side—stood up, ears forward.

Camden inhaled slowly. His eyes widened just slightly.

"Well," he said quietly. "That's unexpected."

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The bond I'd just escaped was trying to form again, and I felt it like a hand closing around my throat.

"I can't," I said. My voice broke. "I can't do this."

I turned back toward my car.

"Wait," Camden said.

I stopped. I don't know why. Maybe because his voice didn't have that commanding Alpha tone. It was just... a request.

"You drove two days to get here," he said. "You're exhausted. You don't have to decide anything right now. Just come inside. Eat something. Rest. We'll figure out the rest tomorrow."

I looked back at him. He wasn't moving toward me. Wasn't pushing. Just waiting.

The golden wolf made a soft sound—not quite a whine, not quite a huff. Like he was agreeing with his Alpha.

"Okay," I whispered.

Camden nodded. "Okay."

He turned and walked back toward the building. The golden wolf looked at me for a long moment, then followed.

I stood there in the canyon twilight, smelling cedar and stone, feeling my wolf stir with something that might have been hope or might have been terror.

I couldn't tell the difference anymore.
