Chapter 2

The drive back to Silverfang territory took Nathaniel forty minutes. He didn't remember most of it.

His hands gripped the steering wheel hard enough that his knuckles went white. The phantom mate-bond pain that had been a dull monthly ache for ten years was now a constant scream, silver poured directly into his chest. Every breath felt like inhaling glass. His wolf clawed at the inside of his ribs, howling her name in a voice that hadn't spoken in a decade.

Delaney.

Her scent had hit him the moment she turned around in that lodge lobby. Not the faint ghost of a rejected bond — the full, devastating reality of it. Lavender and something sharper, something that made his wolf slam against him with enough force to nearly drop him to his knees in front of his own packmates.

He pulled into the pack house driveway and sat there for a long moment, engine idling, staring at the building he'd constructed with the funds meant for Joy's healer program. The marble entrance. The imported stone facade. The floor-to-ceiling windows Amora had insisted on.

It looked hollow.

He killed the engine and went inside. Amora was in the great room, reviewing seating charts for the anniversary banquet with two Omegas. She glanced up when he entered, her expression carefully neutral.

"Did you secure the lodge?" she asked.

"No." His voice came out rougher than he intended. "It was already reserved."

Amora's eyes narrowed slightly. "By whom?"

"Does it matter?" He turned toward the stairs. "We'll find another venue."

"Nathaniel." Her tone sharpened. "Your Alpha tone failed in that lobby. I heard it in your voice when you came back to the car. What happened?"

He stopped with one hand on the railing. The phantom pain twisted deeper, and for a moment he couldn't breathe through it. "Nothing happened. Drop it."

He climbed the stairs before she could press further. His study was at the end of the hall, a room he'd designed with heavy oak furniture and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to project authority. He locked the door behind him and stood there in the dim light, chest heaving.

The bottom drawer of his desk had a false backing. He'd installed it himself years ago. He knelt and pulled it open, his fingers finding the photograph tucked behind the financial records he kept off the books.

It was from Silverfang's founding year. He and Delaney stood in front of the original pack house — barely more than a renovated barn at the time — her head tilted against his shoulder, his arm around her waist. They were both thinner then, younger, their clothes worn but clean. Delaney was smiling.

He stared at the photograph for a long time. His wolf whined, low and broken, the sound of an animal that had been bleeding internally for a decade and only just realized the wound was fatal.

He locked the drawer again before the grief could crack him open completely.

---

Amora waited until Nathaniel's study door closed before pulling out her phone.

Something was wrong. She'd watched him in that lobby — the way his Alpha tone fractured mid-command, the way his entire body went rigid when that woman turned around. Delaney. The name had surfaced in pack records years ago, always in the context of the embezzlement scandal, the rejected Luna who'd been imprisoned and cast out.

Amora had never seen her face before today.

She scrolled through her contacts and found the number for a Council clerk she'd cultivated over the years — a man who owed her favors and didn't ask questions. She typed out a message: *Need a rogue file. Name: Delaney Taylor. Convicted ten years ago, Eastern Seaboard jurisdiction. Everything you have.*

The reply came back within an hour. A PDF attachment, heavily redacted in places, but enough to confirm what she already knew: decade-old conviction, embezzlement, rogue branding, no current pack affiliation listed. The file was thin. Almost too thin.

Amora set her phone down and stared at the seating chart without seeing it.

The woman in that lobby hadn't looked like a rogue. Rogues carried a particular kind of desperation, a feral edge that came from living without pack structure. Delaney had walked past Nathaniel like he was furniture. And every wolf in that room — including two of Nathaniel's own packmates — had turned to watch her leave.

Amora's fingers drummed against the table. She pulled up the anniversary banquet guest list and scanned it slowly, looking for anything unusual. Three hundred wolves from allied packs across the region. Alphas, Lunas, Betas. All accounted for.

She added a note to have security doubled at the venue entrance.

---

Mara White sat in a diner forty miles from Silverfang territory and stirred her coffee without drinking it.

Across from her, Harriet Cole looked older than Mara remembered. The former head healer's hair had gone completely silver, and her hands showed the fine tremor of a wolf who'd spent too many years under a bad Alpha's aura. But her eyes were sharp.

"She's coming back," Harriet said quietly. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

Harriet nodded slowly. She reached into her jacket and pulled out a small sealed envelope. "Give her this. She'll know what it means."

Mara took the envelope without opening it. It was light, almost weightless. "How many of you are left?"

"Enough." Harriet's voice was steady. "We've been waiting a long time. The healer records he thinks he has? Incomplete. The warrior training reports? Flawed. We fed him just enough to keep him from noticing the gaps." She leaned forward slightly. "When the challenge is called, Silverfang's core loyalty belongs to our true Luna. It always has."

Mara slid the envelope into her jacket. "She'll want to see you herself. When it's time."

"I'll be ready." Harriet stood, left cash on the table for her untouched tea, and walked out.

Mara sat alone for another ten minutes, watching the parking lot through the window. Then she pulled out her encrypted phone and sent a single message to Wells: *The pack remembers.*

Later that night, back at the lakeside cabin, I opened the envelope Mara handed me without explanation.

A single pressed herb fell into my palm. Moonflower. From the original healer garden I'd planted behind Silverfang's first pack house, the one I'd designed to save Joy.

I closed my fingers around it and felt something crack open inside my chest — not grief this time, but something fiercer.

They hadn't forgotten.

I looked up at Wells, who was watching me from the doorway with that particular stillness he carried when he was giving me space to feel whatever I needed to feel.

"They're ready," I said.

He crossed the room and pulled me against him, his hand warm against the back of my neck. His wolf purred through the mind-link, low and certain.

*So are you.*
