Chapter 3

The envelope arrived three days after the lodge encounter. Plain paper, no return address, delivered by a young Delta I didn't recognize. He handed it to me at the cabin door, mumbled something about being asked to pass it along, and left before I could question him.

Inside was a handwritten note. Nathaniel's handwriting — I would have known it anywhere, the careful loops he used to practice when we were building Silverfang from nothing.

*Delaney,*

*Whatever stands between us, Joy deserves better. The Harvest Moon gathering is this weekend. I've kept her memorial site maintained all these years. I thought you might want to visit. For her sake, if not for ours.*

*— Nathaniel*

I read it twice. Then I set it on the kitchen table and stared at it until Wells came in from the back deck, carrying firewood.

He saw my face and set the wood down carefully. "What is it?"

I slid the note across to him without a word.

He read it once, his expression unchanging, then looked at me. "Do you want me to handle this?"

"Handle it how?"

"However you need me to." His voice was quiet. Steady. "I can have Elias confirm what we already know. I can send a formal refusal on your behalf. Or I can go with you and stand between you and whatever he's planning."

I picked up the note again. The careful wording. The performance of fatherly grief. The strategic mention of maintaining the site — as if he'd been tending it for a decade instead of commissioning it for a photo opportunity.

"Your Gamma already confirmed it, didn't he?" I asked. "Months ago. That the grave is empty."

Wells nodded once.

"Tell me."

He pulled out a chair and sat across from me. His hands rested flat on the table, close enough that I could feel the heat of them. "Elias traced the records. Joy's ashes were never formally interred. Amora had them scattered within three weeks of her death. No ceremony. No witnesses. The location was a service road near the old healer building."

My chest tightened. I kept my breathing even.

"The headstone was commissioned two years later," Wells continued. "Paid for with pack PR funds. It was installed the week before Silverfang's first anniversary banquet. There are photos of Nathaniel standing beside it in the pack newsletter."

I closed my eyes. Opened them. "Where are her real ashes now?"

"Elias has them." His voice dropped lower. "In a cedar box. Lined with a piece of her hospital blanket. I was waiting for the right time to—"

"Not yet." I stood and walked to the window. The lake was dark and still under the afternoon sky. "I need to do this first."

Wells didn't argue. He just asked, "Do you want me there?"

"No." I turned back to face him. "I need to go alone. He's setting a trap — the grief-stricken father extending an olive branch to the hardened exile. He'll have witnesses. Allied pack representatives. He wants me to look cruel."

"You won't."

"I know." I picked up the note and folded it carefully. "Because I'm going to bury him with it."

The Harvest Moon gathering was held in a clearing at the edge of Silverfang territory. I arrived just after sunset, when the light was soft and golden through the trees. There were maybe thirty wolves scattered around — packmates, a few visiting Alphas, some younger wolves I didn't recognize.

Nathaniel stood near the back of the clearing, beside a granite headstone that gleamed in the fading light. Three wolves in formal pack jackets flanked him — allied representatives, judging by their posture. Witnesses.

I walked toward them slowly. Every step felt deliberate. My wolf was quiet inside me, coiled and waiting.

Nathaniel saw me coming and straightened. He'd dressed carefully — dark jacket, no tie, the kind of understated mourning that photographed well. His expression was solemn.

"Delaney." He kept his voice low, respectful. "Thank you for coming."

I stopped in front of the headstone and read the inscription.

*Joy Kelly*

*Beloved Daughter*

*May the Moon Goddess Keep Her*

The stone was smooth. Expensive. Untouched by weather or time in a way that only happened when something was installed recently and maintained obsessively.

Nathaniel stepped closer. "I know we can't go back. But I thought — for Joy — we could have this. One moment where we're just her parents."

One of the witnesses shifted slightly. I could feel them watching, cataloging, preparing to report back to their Alphas about the rogue who came to her daughter's grave and showed no grief.

I crouched down and touched the grass in front of the headstone. It was thick and green. Well-watered. There was no settling in the earth, no depression where a grave had been dug and filled.

I stood and looked at Nathaniel.

"There's nothing under this ground," I said.

His expression flickered. "What?"

"Joy's ashes were scattered three weeks after she died." My voice was quiet. Steady. "Service road near the old healer building. Amora did it. No ceremony. No witnesses. This headstone was installed two years later for your anniversary banquet."

The clearing went silent.

Nathaniel's face drained of color. "That's not — you don't know what you're talking about."

"September fourteenth, ten years ago." I kept my eyes on his. "That's when Amora scattered them. You redirected Joy's healer funds six weeks before that to start construction on your new pack house. The marble entrance cost forty-three thousand dollars. Joy died on August ninth. Alone. Without me."

One of the witnesses took a half-step back.

"You're lying," Nathaniel said. His voice cracked. "You're trying to—"

"I'm done." I let my Luna aura rise, slow and inevitable, filling the clearing like water. Every unmated wolf in the space turned toward me without thinking. "I'm formally declaring my intent to challenge for Silverfang Pack under Council law. You have seventy-two hours to prepare your defense."

I walked past him. Past the empty grave. Past the witnesses who would carry this story to every allied pack within a hundred miles.

Behind me, Nathaniel called my name. Once. Twice. His voice broke on the third attempt.

I didn't look back.
