After My Alpha Crushed My Wards and Rejected Me
Chapter 2
I barely cleared the tree line of Silverfang territory before the ambush hit.
Heavy boots crunched on the gravel behind me. Before I could whirl around, a thick cloth soaked in wolfsbane clamped over my mouth and nose. Barnaby lunged with a feral snarl, sinking his teeth into an arm, but a steel-toed boot caught him hard in the ribs, sending him skidding down the ravine. I tried to scream his name, but a fist slammed into my jaw.
Darkness blurred the edges of my vision.
When my eyes opened, I was lying on cold concrete. The air reeked of rotten wood, gasoline, and something sharp that stung the back of my throat like battery acid.
Silver dust.
It was scattered across the floor in thick, shimmering lines. The warehouse on the unclaimed fringe was a hollow shell of rusted tin and rotted timber, its high windows nailed shut with iron bars. Outside the chain-link gates, Angie’s two enforcers stood with cans of kerosene.
"Alpha's orders, traitor," one grunted.
He didn't wait for an answer. He struck a match and tossed it.
The room exploded into white, roaring heat. The silver dust ignited with a high, hissing screech, feeding the flames with unnatural blue streaks. Toxic smoke flooded my chest instantly. My throat clamped shut.
My inner wolf, already limp and broken from Duncan’s rejection, shrank deeper into the dark. Werewolf healing required life force, and the silver fumes were actively burning it away. Blisters rose along my forearms. My clothes caught, searing fabric into my skin. I couldn't draw enough air to cough.
*This is it,* my mind whispered. *Duncan broke the bond. Angie lit the match.*
I pressed my back against the wall, sliding down into the soot. My heart stuttered, slowing to a dying thud.
Then, something snapped.
It wasn't a bone. It was an iron seal inside my core, cracking wide open under the pressure of death.
A sound tore through the silence of my mind—not a pathetic whimper, but a low, world-shaking roar. A presence so immense it dwarfed the warehouse rose within me. My ribs popped, expanding with violent force. Muscles tore and reknitted in micro-seconds, surging with a heat so pure and blinding it incinerated the silver poison in my blood like dry grass.
Beneath the surface of my consciousness, I saw her.
She was massive. Twice the size of Duncan's wolf, with incandescent silver fur that burned brighter than the flames around us. Her eyes blazed with the calm, terrifying arrogance of an ancient predator.
I didn't fully shift, but her blood flooded my limbs.
I stood up. The blistering agony of the burns faded into a dull, irrelevant buzz. I drew back my right arm, curled my fingers into a fist, and slammed it straight into the reinforced corrugated iron wall.
The metal shrieked. With a deafening boom, the entire structural beam crumpled outward like tinfoil.
I shoved through the jagged gap, stepping clear of the inferno. Behind me, the warehouse collapsed in a shower of sparks and black smoke. The two enforcers were already gone, assuming the fire had done its job.
I didn't run. I didn't cry.
My skin was blackened, my jacket scorched to threads, and the dead mate mark on my neck burned with cold, dead poison. But my legs were steady. I wiped a mixture of ash and blood from my cheek, turned my back on Silverfang, and began to walk.
Miles slipped beneath my boots as the night faded into grey twilight. Every step jolted through my battered body, but my mind was laser-focused. In the quiet rhythm of my stride, I rehearsed the words I had memorized years ago from the leather-bound journals in my father’s attic.
*The Luna Accord. Chapter Four, Article Twelve.*
By dawn, the scent of the forest changed. The dry pine of Silverfang gave way to the sharp, clean aroma of cedar and mountain rain.
Ironveil territory.
I crossed the boundary line without slowing down. Within fifty yards, three massive grey wolves bounded through the brush, dropping into crouching stances with hackles raised.
"Halt," a patrol guard shifted behind an oak tree, pulling on sweatpants. "Identify yourself."
"Tell Jayce Hunter I am here," I said, my voice raspy from smoke. "And tell him I have business."
The guard stared at my burned face, then at the grey, lifeless rejection mark clearly visible above my collarbone. He tapped his earpiece, speaking in a hurried whisper.
Less than ten minutes later, the trees parted.
Jayce walked out alone.
He wore a dark tactical jacket, his broad shoulders squared, his charcoal-grey wolf aura rolling off him in quiet, suffocating waves. He stopped twenty feet away. The moment his golden eyes landed on my scorched skin and the cold scar on my neck, his jaw went rigid. A violent, possessive growl vibrated deep in his chest—a sound so heavy it made the pine needles tremble on the ground.
His wolf recognized me. It had recognized me for months.
I saw the lethal urge in his posture, the instinct to cross the distance, sweep me into his arms, and tear apart whoever had laid a hand on me.
I didn't flinch. I didn't collapse. I held up one blistered hand, stopping him in his tracks.
"I didn't come here for pity, Alpha Hunter," I said, my voice flat, unhurried, and razor-sharp.
Jayce went completely still. His golden eyes locked onto mine, tracking the strange, lingering silver glow beneath my irises. "Then why are you here, Chloe?"
"An alliance," I answered. I drew in a steady breath, ignoring the sting in my lungs, and spoke the ancient law word for word. "Under the Luna Accord of the Lycan Charter, Section Nine, a formally rejected mate who held administrative dominion carries the legal right to challenge the severing before the Lycan Council. If joined by a sovereign Alpha of superior rank, the petition cannot be refused."
I took one step forward, holding his gaze without blinking.
"Duncan crushed my wards. He left his borders entirely vulnerable to silver rot, and he thinks he got away with murder," I said, tilting my chin. "Back my petition. Lend me your authority before the Council. And I will hand you the ruin of the Silverfang Pack on a silver platter."
