My Alpha Used His Command to Protect His Mistress Chapter 1
At four o’clock on a Tuesday afternoon, Conner Voss brought another woman through the heavy oak doors of the Ironclad pack house.
He didn't just walk her in. His hand rested flat against the small of her back, his Alpha aura radiating a thick, protective heat that practically choked the air out of the grand entry.
"This is Cassidy Maren," Conner announced to the assembled pack, his voice ringing with pride. "She lost everything when her northern pack disbanded. She is a refugee Omega, and she deserves our protection."
Cassidy stood half-hidden behind his shoulder. Her fingers clutched at her collarbone, delicate and pale. Her dark eyes welled with perfectly timed tears as she offered a trembling, breathless whisper of gratitude.
Then her scent rolled over the threshold.
It was cloying—sweet vanilla and bruised willow bark, thick enough to make three unmated Delta warriors by the staircase shift on their heels, their chests expanding as their protective instincts spiked on cue.
I stood by the great stone hearth in my Luna post, arms folded. As that sugar-coated cloud reached me, the dormant wolf inside my rib cage—silent for the five years since Conner and I mated—snapped its jaws shut with a vicious snarl.
*Wrong,* my wolf growled into my blood. *Chemically wrong.*
Beneath the manufactured softness of vanilla, there was a bitter metallic tang. A tincture. A scent mask designed to trigger male instincts while hiding whatever lay rotting underneath.
I waited twenty minutes until the crowd dispersed. Then I followed Conner into his private office, closed the heavy door, and tossed a thin manila folder onto his mahogany desk.
"Cassidy's transfer papers are barely two pages long," I said, keeping my voice level and quiet. "Her supposed birth pack isn't listed in the Lycan Council archives. And that scent she's wearing isn't natural, Conner. It's cut with ground silver-root to fake submission."
Conner didn't even look down at the file. He tossed his keys into a glass bowl, unbuttoning his cuffs with an irritated snap.
"You're unbelievable, Elise," he scoffed. "A frightened girl shows up at our border with bloody feet, and you greet her with background checks? She’s half your size. Are you really that threatened?"
"I don't get threatened. I secure this pack," I stepped closer, tapping the paper. "Her registry numbers don't match the northern sector databases. Let our Beta run a full blood test before you grant her residency."
Conner’s jaw tightened. The veins along his neck bulged, his patience evaporating into raw, wounded arrogance.
He stepped into my space and let his Alpha aura swell, turning the air in the room heavy and suffocating.
*"Enough,"* he commanded, the Alpha tone tearing out of his throat, laced with lethal, hypnotic force. *"You will not target her again."*
The command struck my sternum like a solid lead pipe.
My breath locked in my lungs. Across our sacred bond, the mating mark on my neck didn't throb with warmth—it turned dead, ice-cold, like frost spreading over bare glass. Through the link that had tied our souls together for five years, Conner didn't push regret or guilt.
He pushed pure, sharp contempt.
The shock lasted half a heartbeat. Then, deep in the dark hollows of my chest, something ancient and massive reared its head.
My dormant wolf didn't cower under his command. She went feral.
The heat blew through my veins like boiling oil. The skin beneath my fingernails split as silver-tipped claws punched through my flesh. Amber fire flooded my vision, obliterating the human world in a blinding red haze of predatory rage.
Conner’s eyes widened, his pupils blowing wide as he reflexively stumbled back half a step against his desk.
*Three seconds.*
I held the beast on a razor's edge. I inhaled slowly through my nose, clamped my jaw shut, and forced the silver claws to retract back into my bleeding cuticles. The amber drained from my sight, leaving my dark eyes cold and clear.
I didn't argue. I didn't raise my voice. I took the file off his desk, turned my back on my mate, and walked out.
Ten minutes later, I stood inside the third-floor war room. The only light came from a single wax candle. My ink-stained fingers traced the northern border lines on a wide topographical map of Ironclad land, memorizing every patrol route, every watchtower, and every blind spot. Inside my skull, my wolf paced the perimeter of my mind, baring her teeth, refusing to sleep again.
The side door clicked open. Waverly Austin stepped into the room, her hand resting naturally on the hilt of the blade at her hip. Her scent of crushed pine and flint brought a cool steadiness to the room.
"Jared and Marcus were in the hall," Waverly said quietly, closing the door behind her. "They heard the Alpha voice, Elise. He used it on you. The younger warriors are already murmuring in the barracks."
"Let them murmur," I said without looking up from the map.
I pulled a black, leather-bound ledger from the top drawer of the strategy table and slid it across the paper toward her.
"From this second on, nobody touches Cassidy Maren without my knowledge," I ordered, my voice dropping to a low, lethal cadence. "Log every interaction between her and Conner. Timestamps. Locations. The scent on his shirts when he returns to the pack house. Every single detail."
Waverly opened the cover, clicked her pen, and uncapped the ink. In the courtyard directly below the window, Conner’s laughter drifted up through the evening air, followed by Cassidy's high, delicate giggle.
Waverly pressed the nib to the fresh white page and wrote the first entry.
