Chapter 5

The archive restriction notice appeared on the bulletin board at dawn.

I saw it during my morning cleaning rotation. Third floor, east wing. Right outside the archive door.

*Effective immediately: Archive access suspended pending inventory review. Omega-tier access revoked until further notice. —Beta Elena Marsh*

I stood there with my mop bucket. Read it twice. The ink was still fresh.

One day. She'd missed closing the door by one day.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Felt the small sharp pain. Turned and kept walking.

It didn't matter. I already had what I needed. Six clauses copied. The Luna Accord documented. Every legal angle I could find in two hours per week for three weeks straight.

But the timing told me something else.

Saylor knew I'd been looking. And she had someone inside Silverfang feeding her information. Someone with enough rank to push a restriction order through Beta Elena that fast.

I filed that detail next to the others. Adjusted my timeline.

The confrontation had to happen today. Before she moved again.

I met Roane at the eastern marker at dawn. Same twelve-minute window. Same gap in the fence.

He was already there. He handed me a sealed envelope without a word.

I opened it. Three pages. Handwritten. Precise.

*Subject: Saylor West. Origin: Blackridge Territory, forty miles south. Confirmed mate bond: Bradley Collins, exiled former Beta of Silverfang Pack. Offspring: male pup, age six months, currently concealed in rogue encampment twelve miles west of Silverfang border. Scent-masking compounds detected in subject's clothing samples—commercial grade, designed to layer artificial fragility over natural scent. Conclusion: Subject is not a lone wolf seeking sanctuary. Subject is an operative.*

I read it three times. Memorized every word. Then I looked up at Roane.

"The pup's location," I said. "You're certain?"

"Saw him myself," Roane said. "Bradley's scent all over the site. The she-wolf visits every three days. Brings supplies. Stays an hour. Leaves."

I folded the pages. Slid them into my jacket.

"One more thing," I said. "I need scent-documentation. Physical samples linking her to Bradley. Something a healer can verify."

Roane pulled a second envelope from his coat. Smaller. Sealed with wax.

"Cloth sample from the encampment," he said. "Bradley's scent and hers layered together. Fresh. No more than two days old."

I took it. Felt the weight of it in my hand.

"This is enough," I said.

Roane looked at me for a long moment. "You're going after her."

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"For now."

He nodded once. Turned. Disappeared into the trees.

I stood there for a moment. The envelope felt heavier than it should. Inside my chest, my wolf made that low steady sound again. Not a howl. Not a whimper.

Just a hum. Like something sharpening itself in the dark.

I slipped back through the fence and walked toward the pack house.

I engineered access to the infirmary during midday rotation.

Omegas didn't usually request healer visits unless the injury was severe enough to interfere with labor assignments. But I'd been careful. Yesterday, I'd let my hand slip while hauling a crate. The corner caught my forearm. Left a visible bruise and a shallow cut.

Not serious. But visible.

I wrapped it loosely and reported to Beta Elena during the lunch break.

"Infirmary," she said, barely looking up from her clipboard. "Get it treated and get back to rotation. You have kitchen duty at two."

"Understood," I said.

I walked to the infirmary. Checked the schedule posted outside the door. Saylor had a routine appointment at one-fifteen. Herb request for anxiety relief. She came every week.

I timed my arrival for one-twelve.

The healer was alone when I walked in. She looked up from her desk. "Vivian."

"Minor injury," I said. I held up my arm. "Needs cleaning."

She gestured to the examination table. "Sit."

I sat. Set my jacket on the chair beside me. The two envelopes were inside the inner pocket. I could feel their weight.

The healer unwrapped the bandage. Examined the cut. "This is shallow. Why didn't you treat it yourself?"

"Protocol," I said. "Any visible injury during Omega rotation requires documentation."

She looked at me for a moment. Then nodded. "I'll clean it."

While she prepared the supplies, I pulled the envelopes from my jacket. Laid them on the examination table. Opened the first one. The three-page report. The scent-documentation vial from the second envelope.

I arranged them in sequence. Report first. Vial second. Chronological. Clean.

The healer turned back. Saw the documents. Stopped.

"What is this?" she asked.

I met her eyes. "Evidence."

She looked down at the pages. Read the first paragraph. Her expression didn't change, but her hand tightened slightly on the antiseptic cloth.

"Vivian—"

The door opened.

Two Gamma warriors walked in. Marcus Hale and another I didn't know by name. They were assigned to infirmary rotation this week. Security protocol during healer appointments.

They nodded to the healer. Took positions on either side of the door.

I didn't move. Kept my eyes on the documents.

The healer looked at me. Then at the Gammas. Then back at the papers.

She didn't speak.

Footsteps in the hallway. Soft. Careful.

I knew that gait.

The door opened again.

Saylor walked in.

She wore a pale yellow sweater. Hair loose. Eyes down. She stopped when she saw me. Her gaze flicked to the examination table. To the documents spread out there.

For one second, her expression went completely blank.

Then the soft helpless mask slid back into place.

"Oh," she said quietly. "I didn't know anyone else was here. I can come back—"

"Stay," I said.

My voice was calm. Flat. Final.

Saylor looked at the healer. The healer looked at the documents. The two Gammas shifted slightly but didn't leave their posts.

I picked up the first page of the report.

"Saylor West," I said. "Blackridge Territory. Confirmed mate of Bradley Collins, exiled former Beta of Silverfang Pack. Mother of his illegitimate male pup, age six months, currently concealed in a rogue encampment twelve miles west of the border."

I set the page down. Picked up the vial.

"Scent-documentation," I continued. "Cloth sample from the encampment. Bradley's scent and yours layered together. Fresh. Verified by independent rogue tracker."

I set the vial down. Picked up the second page.

"Scent-masking compounds detected in your clothing samples. Commercial grade. Designed to layer artificial fragility over natural scent. Conclusion: you are not a lone wolf seeking sanctuary. You are an operative."

I looked up. Met her eyes.

"You came here to destroy me," I said. "On Bradley's orders. To strip me of pack standing so he could install his male heir. You weaponized Grayson's protective instincts. You manufactured vulnerability. You played helpless."

I paused.

"And it worked."

Saylor's mask held for four seconds.

Her lips parted. Her hand moved to her throat. Her eyes widened slightly—the perfect performance of shock and hurt.

"I don't—" she started. Her voice trembled. "I don't understand. Vivian, I never—"

Then something shifted.

Just for a moment. One unguarded heartbeat.

Her eyes went cold. Sharp. Calculating. The trembling stopped. Her mouth tightened at the corners—not with emotion, but with irritation.

Like she was recalculating. Adjusting strategy.

Then she drew breath.

And screamed.
