Chapter 4

The rogue arrived just after midnight.

I heard the knock — three soft taps, a pause, then two more — and knew before I opened the door that this wasn't a social call. Anika was already moving from the couch, her hand going to the knife she kept strapped beneath the coffee table. I waved her back.

The wolf on the porch was thin. Scarred. His clothes were road-worn and his scent carried the particular flatness of someone who had been living outside pack territory for a long time. He didn't meet my eyes.

"Lana Mitchell?" His voice was low.

"Yes."

He held out a manila envelope. Sealed. No markings. "Someone said you'd want this."

I took it. The paper was slightly damp from the rain. "Who sent you?"

He shook his head. "Didn't give a name. Just said you'd know what to do with it." He stepped back. "I was told to tell you: the truth doesn't need a witness. It just needs light."

Then he turned and disappeared into the dark.

Anika shut the door. Locked it. "You know him?"

"No."

"You trust this?"

I looked at the envelope in my hands. It was heavier than it should have been. "I don't know yet."

I carried it to the kitchen table. Set it down under the single overhead light. Anika stood in the doorway, watching, but she didn't come closer. She knew when I needed space.

I opened it.

Inside was a file. Medical-grade paper. Official healer's seal from a pack I recognized — Maisy's birth pack, two territories west. The pages were neatly organized. Dated. Signed.

I read the first page. Then the second. Then I went back to the first and read it again, slower this time, because the words didn't change no matter how many times I looked at them.

*Patient: Maisy Stone. Date of Examination: Four years prior. Diagnosis: Congenital uterine malformation resulting in permanent infertility. Prognosis: Patient is unable to conceive or carry offspring. Condition is irreversible.*

I didn't move.

The kitchen was very quiet. I could hear the rain against the window. I could hear Anika's breathing from the doorway. I could hear my own heartbeat, steady and slow, like my body had decided this moment required absolute calm.

Permanently barren.

Four years ago.

Which meant that when Maisy had walked into the Silverfang pack house three weeks ago with her hand on her stomach and her soft, trembling voice announcing Rome's heir, she had been lying. Not mistaken. Not confused. Lying. Deliberately. Completely.

Sera stirred inside me — not with rage, but with something colder and more precise. *Now we have her,* she said.

I closed the file. Placed it carefully in my leather satchel beside the field journals. My hands were steady.

Anika spoke from the doorway. "Lan?"

I looked up.

"What's in it?"

I met her eyes. "Everything."

She came closer. Pulled out the chair across from me. Sat. "Tell me."

So I did.

When I finished, Anika was very still. Then she leaned back in her chair and laughed — a short, sharp sound with no humor in it. "She faked the whole thing."

"Yes."

"The pregnancy. The fall. The—" She stopped. "The miscarriage she's going to stage."

"Probably."

Anika shook her head slowly. "Rome's going to lose his mind."

"Eventually," I said. "But not yet."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

I touched the satchel. "This is a weapon. But weapons are only useful if you deploy them at the right moment, in the right arena, in front of the right witnesses." I paused. "If I show this to Rome privately, he'll find a way to bury it. Danna will help him. They'll say the records are forged, or outdated, or irrelevant. They'll protect the narrative."

"So you need it public."

"I need it undeniable."

Anika was quiet for a moment. Then she smiled — slow and sharp. "The Alliance Banquet."

I nodded.

The regional Alliance Banquet was six weeks out. Neutral territory. Every Alpha in the Pacific Northwest. Witnesses who couldn't be controlled or silenced. A formal setting where pack law and public reputation mattered more than private spin.

If I was going to destroy Maisy's lies, that was where it had to happen.

"Six weeks," Anika said. "That's a long time to sit on this."

"It is."

"Can you do it?"

I looked at the satchel. At the sealed file that contained the truth Maisy had built her entire claim around hiding.

Sera was calm inside me. Certain. *We've waited five years,* she said. *We can wait six more weeks.*

"Yes," I said. "I can."

---

The call from Caden came two days later.

I was reviewing the Pinewood contract revisions when my phone buzzed. His name on the screen. I picked up.

"Lana." His voice was tight. "We have a problem."

I set down my pen. "Talk to me."

"The eastern border. Rogue King's been probing the outposts for three days now. Small groups. Testing response times."

I frowned. "Rome should have reinforced by now."

"He did. Wrong outpost." Caden's frustration was audible. "He misread the pattern. Sent warriors to the northern perimeter. The rogues hit the southeastern camp last night. Took it clean."

My hand tightened on the phone. "Casualties?"

"Two injured. No deaths. But Lana—" He paused. "The pack's talking. They're saying Rome didn't see it coming. That his instincts are off."

"His instincts were never the issue," I said quietly. "The intelligence network was mine. The diplomatic protocols were mine. He's operating blind."

"I know." Another pause. "They're starting to figure that out."

I closed my eyes. Sera moved restlessly. *Let it fall,* she said. *Let them see.*

"Keep me updated," I said. "Anything changes, I want to know immediately."

"Understood."

I hung up.

Anika was watching me from the couch. "How bad?"

"Bad enough." I stood. Walked to the window. The rain had started again. "The Rogue King's moving on Silverfang's eastern border. Rome's losing ground."

"Good," Anika said flatly.

I didn't answer.

Because it wasn't good. It was inevitable. And inevitability, I was learning, felt less like victory and more like watching something you built catch fire in slow motion — even when you were the one who struck the match.

I touched the unmarked curve of my neck.

Six weeks until the banquet.

Six weeks until I opened the file in front of every Alpha who mattered.

Six weeks until Maisy's lies burned in public, and Rome finally understood what it cost to lose the only wolf who had ever known how to see.
