Chapter 2

Anika's lake house smelled like cedar and rain. I sat at her kitchen table until three in the morning, writing names.

Caden Voss. Elara Finch. Marcus Chen, the pack accountant who had quietly flagged Rome's careless spending for two years running. Sienna Holt, the alliance liaison who had traveled with me to four different territories and knew every Alpha's mate by first name. Two others — wolves whose loyalty I had earned not through rank but through the kind of small, repeated acts that Rome never thought to perform.

Six names. Six wolves I trusted absolutely.

Anika leaned against the counter, mug in hand. "You're sure about this?"

"They followed me because they chose to," I said. "Not because I asked."

"That's not what I meant." She set the mug down. "I meant are you sure you want to do this in twenty-four hours? We could wait. Build the case slower."

I looked up. "If I wait, Rome will start locking things down. Danna's already mind-linking every ranked wolf in the pack, telling them an unmarked she-wolf has no legal claim to anything. The longer I stay quiet, the more that story becomes truth."

Sera stirred beneath my ribs, restless and awake in a way she hadn't been in years. *We don't wait anymore,* she said.

I touched the unmarked curve of my neck. Then I picked up my phone.

The first text went to Caden.

*Pack house. Tomorrow. 6 a.m. Bring a truck.*

His response came back in thirty seconds. *Yes, Luna.*

---

We arrived at dawn.

The pack house was quiet. Most of the wolves were still asleep, and the few early risers in the kitchen didn't look twice as Caden's truck pulled around to the side entrance. I had my key. Rome had given it to me three years ago with a smile that suggested permanence.

I used it one last time.

Elara met us in the hallway, her face pale but set. She had a rolling cart. "The alliance files are in the east office," she said quietly. "Treasury documentation is in the safe. I have the code."

I blinked. "How—"

"You think Rome ever changed it after you set it up?" She almost smiled. "He doesn't even know where half the files are kept."

We moved fast. Caden and Marcus hauled the file cabinets. Sienna packed the alliance contracts into labeled boxes with the efficiency of someone who had done this in her head a hundred times. I took the field journals myself — five years of black leather, numbered and dated, every page in my own handwriting.

The genealogy record sat in the sitting room where it always had, framed and prominent. Danna's prize. I walked past it on my way out and did not slow down.

We were gone in forty minutes.

The pack house sat behind us, golden and intact, and utterly gutted.

---

Rome's mind-link hit me as Caden's truck crossed the territory line.

*LANA.*

His voice was raw. Furious. Cracking at the edges in a way I had never heard before.

*You come back here. Right now. You don't get to just — you can't just take —*

I closed the link.

Danna's came next, colder and more precise.

*Miss Mitchell. You have removed pack property without authorization. As former Luna of Silverfang, I am formally demanding the immediate return of all materials, records, and assets belonging to this pack. An unmarked she-wolf holds no legal claim —*

I closed hers too.

Anika glanced at me from the passenger seat. "How bad?"

"Rome's panicking. Danna's threatening."

"Good." She pulled a protein bar from the glove box and handed it to me. "Eat something. You didn't touch the chocolate last night."

I took the bar. I didn't open it.

Sera was fully awake now, pacing restless circles inside my mind. *They're afraid,* she said. *They should be.*

---

By noon, the human attorney I had retained — a sharp, unsmiling woman named Claudia Reese who asked no questions about werewolves and cared only about contracts — had hand-delivered the demand letter to the Silverfang pack house.

I didn't see Rome's face when he read it. But Caden, who still had access to the pack's security feeds, sent me a two-second video clip.

Rome stood in his office, the letter in his hand. He read it once. Twice. Then he called for Danna.

She came in, read over his shoulder, and for a long moment neither of them moved.

The video cut off.

"Five hundred thousand," Anika said, reading the letter over my shoulder. "Plus interest. Plus the threat of full financial disclosure to human auditors if he doesn't pay within fourteen days."

"He can't pay," I said quietly. "Not without liquidating assets he's already promised to other packs. And if he goes to human auditors, every under-the-table alliance deal he's made in five years gets exposed."

"So he's trapped."

"He's trapped."

Sera's satisfaction was a low, steady hum.

---

That night, I sat in the safehouse Anika had arranged — a small, clean apartment in a neutral-territory building I didn't recognize — and spread the alliance contracts across the dining table.

Six packs. Eleven treaties. Four trade agreements.

Every single one of them listed my name in the witness signature line. Not Rome's. Mine.

I picked up my phone.

The first call went to Alpha Garrett of the Pinewood Pack, a gruff older wolf who had negotiated a lumber trade agreement with me two years ago over bad coffee and worse weather.

He picked up on the second ring. "Lana?"

"Alpha Garrett," I said. "I'm calling to discuss the Pinewood-Silverfang lumber agreement."

There was a pause. "I heard what happened. Rome announced it at the regional call yesterday."

"Then you know I'm no longer affiliated with Silverfang."

"I do."

I took a breath. "The agreement we built — the pricing structure, the transport routes, the quality standards — that was my work. You and I negotiated it. Not Rome."

"I remember."

"I'm establishing an independent operation," I said. "And I'm offering you the same terms. Better terms, if you're willing to transfer the contract."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Lana," he said finally, "I didn't do business with Silverfang because of Rome. I did it because of you."

Something tight in my chest loosened.

"Then we have a deal?"

"We have a deal."

I hung up. I made the second call. Then the third.

By the end of the week, three packs had formally transferred their alliance agreements to me.

Silverfang's operational capacity — already crippled by the evacuation — began to hemorrhage.

And somewhere in the pack house I had walked out of, Rome was beginning to understand what it meant to lose the only wolf who had ever known how to build.
