After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me Novel Cover

After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me

The Ironveil pack hall is carved into my bones: cedar smoke, cold stone, the sour edge of fear. I know where the light falls. I know the instant my world ended. I have died here before—not in this hall, but on a cliff three miles north, Lea Parker's hands warm on my shoulders, Collin's silence louder than any scream. It started here, one breath before the worst. The Moon Goddess pulled me back from death and sealed me inside my own body, my own life, at the exact moment my Alpha chose his mistress over me. This time, I remember everything.

Chapter 3

The first sign of the blockade came at dawn, three days after I planted the Silvercrest banner.

One of our supply trucks rolled back into camp instead of pushing north through the Blackthorn pass. The driver, a young Delta named Rowan, climbed out looking sick. His hands wouldn't stop moving.

"Turned around," he said. "Blackthorn warriors at the crossroads. Six of them. Said no Silvercrest wheels roll on their asphalt. Said if I tried, they'd take the truck and leave me walking."

"Did they touch you?"

"No, Alpha. Just made a point."

I put a hand on his shoulder. "You did right coming back. Go eat."

He went. I stood in the pale morning light and let the word settle in my chest. *Alpha.* It still landed strange, even from a boy I'd known since he was in short pants.

Nadia came up beside me before the truck's dust had cleared. "Blackthorn?"

"Blackthorn."

"Which means Collin."

"Which means Collin."

She swore, low and creative. "How many routes?"

"Rowan was the third truck turned back this morning. I'm guessing all of them."

By noon we had the picture. Draven Blackthorn had blocked the northern trade road. Soren Ashgrove had shut the eastern pass. The little roadside packs that used to sell us fuel and grain were suddenly not answering their phones. One old contact — a widow who ran a feed depot on the county line — did answer. Her voice was tight.

"I'm sorry, honey. Ironveil sent a rider. Said any pack that trades with Silvercrest gets counted an enemy of the alliance. I have kids to feed."

"I understand," I told her. And I did. That was the worst of it. I did.

Nadia found me in the map room an hour later. She dropped a folded printout on the table.

"Council bulletin," she said. "Just went out. Collin's filed something official."

I opened it. Read it twice.

*Ironveil Pack, in cooperation with Blackthorn and Ashgrove, has instituted temporary territorial stabilization measures along its western and southern borders in response to a suspected rogue-harboring situation in the newly declared Silvercrest region.*

"Rogue-harboring," I said flatly.

"He's calling us rogues."

"He's calling us a public danger. Different flavor of the same knife." I set the paper down. My wolf paced under my skin, not angry, not yet — measuring. *Let him,* she murmured. *Let him build the rope. We'll hand him the loop.*

I looked up. "Nadia. Sit down. We're going to work."

We worked until midnight.

By the time the moon was full overhead, I had two names on the wall — Fernhollow and Duskridge. Small packs. Independent. Both sitting outside the Blackthorn alliance, both with old grudges against Draven for pushing them around at last year's Council meeting. Fernhollow had good grain land. Duskridge had a working mill and a river route Collin couldn't touch without violating three separate treaties.

I wrote to both Alphas myself. Handwritten letters, on paper, sent by warrior courier — old-fashioned, deliberate, respectful. I didn't ask for charity. I offered a fair-market supply agreement, priced above what Blackthorn would ever pay, plus a formal Silvercrest promise of mutual defense if their border ever needed it. I signed each one with my full name and the fresh Silvercrest seal.

"They'll say yes," Nadia said, reading over my shoulder.

"They might."

"They will. Because you're offering them dignity. Draven never did."

I hoped she was right. I sealed the second letter and slid it across the table.

Then I pulled out a third sheet. This one was harder. This one was for the Council.

"Nadia. I want you to carry this yourself. Tomorrow. First light."

"To the Council?"

"Formal grievance. Blockade constitutes violation of Article Twelve of the Inter-Pack Commerce Accord. I want it filed on the record, in person, by my Beta. I want Collin to see your face across the chamber."

Her mouth curved slow and mean. "You want to put him on defense."

"I want the Council to have to open an inquiry. Once they do, every move he makes has to be documented. Every trade he blocks becomes evidence. He can't strangle us in the dark anymore."

"You're turning his own system on him."

"He built it thinking it would only ever protect people like him." I capped the pen. "He was wrong."

She left before sunrise, four warriors at her back, my grievance folded inside her jacket over her heart.

---

I did not sleep that night. I couldn't. I walked the perimeter myself, wolf-form, moving low through the pines. The territory still smelled new to me — bark and river silt and my own scent laid down at every marker post. Mine. The word kept surprising me.

I came in near dawn, shifted back, pulled on clean clothes, and had one full breath of quiet before Kade — a young warrior on the eastern watch — came sprinting up to the porch with his eyes too wide.

"Alpha. The training ground. You need to see it."

My stomach dropped an inch. "Show me."

The training ground sat in a shallow clearing a half-mile from the main camp. When we crested the rise, I stopped walking.

The weapons shed was smoke. The rack of practice blades was scattered and snapped. Someone had tipped the drinking trough and left something in the water — the smell hit me from twenty feet, a chemical bite my wolf snarled at instantly. Poison.

And there, laid out in a deliberate arc across the packed dirt, were three rogue pelts. Skinned recently. Bloody. Arranged the way a hunter arranges a trophy.

Beside them, wedged under a rock so the wind wouldn't take it, was a torn strip of cloth. Neutral pack colors. Green and grey. Rivermarsh Pack. Two counties over.

A frame.

My wolf stopped pacing. She went utterly, coldly still.

*Someone,* she said, *walked our ground last night.*

I crouched by the pelts and touched one, careful. Still faintly warm underneath. Whoever did this had been here inside the last four hours — while I was on the western perimeter, while Nadia rode toward the Council, while our watch rotated through a gap they hadn't known was a gap.

I stood up slowly.

"Kade."

"Alpha."

"Get me every warrior who was on rotation between midnight and now. And get me the tracker. Nobody touches this ground until I say. Nobody breathes on it."

He ran.

I stayed where I was, in the wrecked clearing, in the wet chemical stink and the smell of another wolf's fear-sweat under the frame job. Some of the scent under the pelts was rogue. Some of it wasn't.

Some of it was perfume. Heavy floral. Layered thick to hide something weaker underneath.

I knew that perfume.

My wolf bared her teeth inside my chest, and for the first time since the rejection, I smiled without any warmth in it at all.

*Hello, Lea.*
