Chapter 4

The withdrawal notices came in like dominoes falling.

I was sitting on the motel bed when my phone lit up with the first alert—a notification from the territorial network I'd never bothered to unsubscribe from. Alpha Marcus of the Ironwood Pack had formally withdrawn his treaty with Shadowridge. The message was one line: *Effective immediately. No further correspondence required.*

Twenty minutes later, the second notice arrived. Alpha Dane of Clearwater. Same terse language. Same finality.

The third came an hour after that. Alpha Simone of Ridgemont—the only female Alpha in the northeastern alliance, the one Trevor had always been slightly afraid of even when he pretended otherwise.

I read each message twice. Then I set the phone down and stared at the wall.

Three alliances. Gone. All within the span of a morning.

They hadn't waited for an explanation. Hadn't asked questions. They'd simply smelled the rot and pulled back before it could spread to their own territories.

Weakness traveled faster than any message ever could.

I wondered if Trevor was reading the same notifications right now. If he was standing in some coastal resort room with Viviana hovering nearby, watching his phone light up with the systematic dismantling of everything he'd built.

I wondered if he understood yet.

Probably not.

Men like Trevor never understood until there was nothing left to misunderstand.

---

The bond-sickness hit hardest on day four.

I woke up shaking so badly I couldn't hold a glass of water. My vision doubled when I tried to stand. The dead mark on my neck had opened again overnight—not bleeding, exactly, but weeping something clear and cold that soaked through the collar of my shirt.

I made it to the bathroom and gripped the edge of the sink. My reflection looked hollowed out. Gray skin. Bruised shadows under my eyes. The mark was visible even in the dim light—a ragged, colorless scar that looked like it had been burned into my skin and left to rot.

I ran cold water over a towel and pressed it against my neck. The relief lasted maybe thirty seconds.

The presence in my mind circled closer.

It had been pressing at the edges of my consciousness for days—formless, urgent, trying to break through. But now it felt different. Deliberate. Like it was gathering itself for something.

I leaned against the sink and closed my eyes.

"I know you're there," I whispered.

It didn't answer. Not in words. But the quality of its attention shifted—sharpened—and I felt it listening.

"Two more days," I said quietly. "Just wait two more days."

The presence circled once more, then settled. Not gone. Just waiting.

I went back to bed and lay very still. My body felt like it was burning and freezing at the same time. I pulled the blanket up to my chin and focused on breathing.

In. Out. In. Out.

Two more days.

---

Garrett's text came late afternoon.

*He's back. It's bad.*

I stared at the message for a long moment. Then I typed a response. *How bad?*

The reply came fast. *Half the pack house is empty. Deltas are requesting transfers. The healer's documenting everything. Caroline, he tried to mind-link me from the coast and couldn't reach. The link is just… gone.*

I closed my eyes.

The mind-link was one of the most basic functions of pack hierarchy. Alphas maintained it through sheer aura strength. If Trevor couldn't hold the link anymore, it meant his wolf wasn't just weakened.

It meant there was almost nothing left.

*What are you going to do?* I typed.

Garrett's response took longer this time. *I'm leaving. Tonight. I can't serve an Alpha who isn't one anymore.*

I read the message three times.

Garrett had been Trevor's Beta for five years. Loyal. Steady. The kind of second-in-command who made an Alpha look better than he actually was.

If Garrett was leaving, the collapse wasn't just structural anymore.

It was visible.

*Good luck,* I typed.

He didn't reply.

---

I imagined Trevor walking through the pack house that evening.

Doors open. Rooms abandoned. The communal dining hall set for forty wolves and occupied by eleven.

I imagined Garrett meeting him at the entrance—quiet, regretful, final.

I imagined Trevor grabbing him by the collar. Using Alpha tone. Commanding him to stay.

And I imagined the command producing nothing. No biological weight. No instinctive submission. Just empty air.

I imagined Garrett removing Trevor's hand from his collar. Meeting his eyes. Walking away.

And Trevor standing alone in the foyer afterward, surrounded by the hollow shell of the pack he thought he'd built.

I didn't feel sorry for him.

I felt nothing at all.

---

That night, the fever spiked.

I lay in the dark with my mother's marker beside me, wrapped in cloth, never touching the floor. My skin felt too tight. My heartbeat was too loud.

The presence in my mind was so close now I could almost see it—silver and massive and waiting just beneath the surface of my consciousness.

"Soon," I whispered into the darkness.

It didn't answer.

But I felt it shift. Felt it coil tighter. Felt it prepare.

Two more days.

I closed my eyes and let the fever carry me under.

When I woke, the sun was rising, and the bond-sickness had finally started to ease.

Not gone. But manageable.

Like my body understood, at last, that the thing it was mourning had never been real to begin with.

I sat up slowly. My phone was dark on the nightstand. No new messages. No missed calls.

Shadowridge was collapsing in real time, and no one was calling me for help.

Because they finally understood what I'd known all along.

I was never the one who needed saving.
