Chapter 5

I woke on day five to silence.

Not the quiet of early morning—the silence of something ending. The bond-sickness had eased overnight, leaving behind a hollow clarity. My body felt lighter. My mind felt sharper. The dead mark on my neck had finally stopped weeping.

I sat up slowly and unwrapped my mother's marker. The granite was cool under my fingers. I traced the letters of her name—Seren Parker—and felt the presence in my mind stir. It was so close now. Right beneath the surface. Waiting.

"One more day," I whispered.

It circled once, restless, then settled.

I rewrapped the marker carefully and set it beside the bed. Then I showered, dressed, and made coffee I actually drank this time. The motel room felt smaller than it had yesterday. Like I was outgrowing it.

My phone buzzed once. A notification from the territorial network.

Alpha Simone of Ridgemont had formally withdrawn her treaty with Shadowridge.

I read the message and set the phone down.

Three alliances gone. Trevor's reputation collapsing in real time.

I wondered if he was reading the same notification right now. If he understood yet that the thing he'd built was never his to begin with.

Probably not.

---

The pounding on my door came just after two in the afternoon.

I was sitting on the bed when it started—three heavy strikes that rattled the frame. Then a voice I knew too well.

"Caroline. Open the door."

Trevor.

I didn't move. Didn't answer.

Another three strikes. Harder this time.

"I know you're in there. Open the door. Now."

Alpha tone. The command rolled through the air with the weight of authority he'd wielded for seven years.

It felt like nothing.

I stood slowly and walked to the door. My hand rested on the handle. I could hear him breathing on the other side—ragged, uneven. Not the controlled Alpha presence he used to project.

"Caroline." His voice dropped lower. Almost pleading. "The pack is dying. You have to reverse this. Whatever ritual you did—whatever blood pact you invoked—you have to undo it."

I opened the door.

Trevor stood in the threshold with two wolves behind him—younger Deltas I recognized from pack drills. His face was unshaven. His jacket was rumpled. The careful grooming he'd always maintained was gone entirely.

He looked at me and froze.

I knew what he was seeing. I'd checked the mirror before answering. Gaunt face. Bruised shadows under my eyes. The dead mark on my neck—visible, colorless, a scar that looked like it had been burned in and left to rot.

But I was standing. And I was present. And something in my eyes made him take half a step back before he caught himself.

"You owe me," he said. His voice was rough. "Seven years. The life I built. The name I gave you. You owe me."

I said nothing.

"Reverse the dissolution," he continued. "Whatever clause you invoked—break it. The pack can't survive without—" He stopped. Swallowed. "Without the bond."

I tilted my head slightly. "Without my power, you mean."

His jaw tightened. "It was our bond. Our strength. You're destroying everything because you're—" He gestured vaguely at my neck. "Because you're hurt. I get it. But this is bigger than your feelings, Caroline. The pack needs—"

"The pack needed a Luna," I said quietly. "Not a battery."

Trevor's hand shot out. He reached for my neck—the instinct to re-mark, to force the bond back through physical dominance.

I caught his wrist.

My grip was stronger than it should have been. Significantly stronger. I felt his bones shift under my fingers. Felt his wolf—what was left of it—cringe away from the pressure.

Trevor's eyes went wide.

Something behind my vision flickered. Silver light at the edges. The presence in my mind surged forward, pressing against the surface, and for half a second I felt it—massive, ancient, coiled tight beneath my skin.

The two Deltas behind Trevor took an involuntary step backward.

I held Trevor's wrist for three more seconds. Then I released him.

"Your wolf was never yours," I said. My voice was steady. No heat. No anger. Just fact. "Your strength was never yours. And I am no longer yours."

I stepped back and closed the door.

The lock clicked.

I stood very still on the other side, listening.

Trevor didn't move immediately. I heard his breathing—sharp, uneven. Then footsteps. Retreating.

I walked back to the bed and sat down. My hand was shaking slightly. Not from fear. From the effort it had taken to hold the presence back. To keep it from tearing through my skin right there in the doorway.

One more day.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist and counted my heartbeats until they slowed.

---

I didn't know about the loyalists' report until much later.

Didn't know that the two Deltas who'd accompanied Trevor went straight to the pack healer instead of back to the pack house.

Didn't know they described my grip strength—inconsistent with a bond-sick wolf.

Didn't know they mentioned the silver flash in my eyes. The aura pressure that made their wolves cringe without understanding why.

Didn't know the healer cross-referenced their report with the message I'd sent to the Lycan Council on day three.

Didn't know she read the words "bond-parasitism event" and "healer standby request" and sent an urgent escalation to the regional office.

I didn't know any of that yet.

All I knew was that the sun was setting outside my motel window.

That my mother's marker sat beside me, wrapped in cloth, never touching the floor.

That the presence in my mind was so close now I could feel its heartbeat—separate from mine, stronger than mine, waiting for the moment when the six days ended and the bond died completely.

One more day.

I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes.

Whatever was coming, I would be ready.
