Chapter 3

I signed the rejection acceptance at 3:14 in the morning.

The motel room was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator in the corner. My laptop sat open on the small desk, the Lycan Council's public portal glowing white against the darkness. I'd pulled up the form an hour earlier and stared at it until the words blurred.

Rejection Acceptance and Bond Severance Confirmation.

Most wolves never filed this. They couldn't. The grief was too heavy, or the hope that their mate would come back was too strong. Some went years without signing, living in limbo, waiting for a bond that was already dead to somehow resurrect itself.

I wasn't waiting.

I typed my name into the field. Caroline Parker. Not Morrison. The cursor blinked after the last letter. I paused, my thumb pressing against the inside of my wrist, then hit enter.

The form processed. A timestamp appeared at the top: Day Three, 3:14 a.m.

I stared at it for a long moment. Then I opened a new message window and addressed it to the Lycan Council's territorial oversight division. My fingers moved across the keyboard slowly, carefully.

*Flagging unprecedented bond-parasitism event in progress at Shadowridge territory. Alpha Trevor Elliott's wolf strength artificially sustained through mate bond for seven years via Luna Accord blood pact. Dissolution clause invoked Day One. Request healer on standby for territorial collapse assessment.*

I attached the rejection acceptance document. Added my contact information. Then I hovered over the send button.

If I sent this, there would be a record. An official trail. The Council would investigate. Trevor's reputation wouldn't just crumble—it would be dissected, analyzed, entered into archives as a case study in bond exploitation.

I clicked send.

The message disappeared from my screen. Confirmation appeared a moment later: *Received. Case number assigned. Oversight division notified.*

I closed the laptop and lay down on the bed. My mother's marker rested beside me, still wrapped in cloth. I never set it on the floor. Never let it touch anything that wasn't clean.

My eyes closed. The bond-sickness was quieter tonight—not gone, but manageable. Like my body was starting to understand that the thing it was mourning had never really been mine to begin with.

Four more days.

I slept.

---

Day three, afternoon.

I woke to sunlight filtering through the curtains and three missed calls from an unknown number. I didn't listen to the voicemails. Instead, I drove to a diner two towns over and ordered coffee I didn't drink.

My phone buzzed again. This time it was a text from Garrett.

*He's leaving. Taking Viviana to the coast. Says it's alliance outreach. Everyone knows it's not.*

I read the message twice, then set the phone face-down on the table.

Trevor was running. He just didn't know that's what he was doing. He thought distance would fix whatever was breaking inside him. Thought a change of scenery would restore the Alpha presence that was draining out of him like water through a cracked basin.

It wouldn't.

I paid for the coffee I hadn't touched and left.

---

Day four. Evening.

I was in the motel room when it happened.

I didn't see it. I didn't need to. I felt it through the bond—or what was left of it. A sudden, sharp absence. Like a light going out.

Trevor's wolf had failed completely.

I sat very still on the edge of the bed. My hand moved to my neck, to the dead mark that had been cold and hollow for days. It felt different now. Not just empty. Erased.

My phone buzzed. Garrett again.

*He can't shift. Rogues tested the resort perimeter. He tried to shift and nothing happened. Caroline, his wolf is gone.*

I stared at the message.

Gone.

Not weakened. Not flickering. Gone.

I typed a response slowly. *Two more days.*

Garrett's reply came almost immediately. *The pack is fracturing. Half the Deltas have already left. The alliances are pulling their treaties. What happens when the six days are up?*

I didn't answer.

I set the phone aside and looked at my mother's marker, still wrapped, still safe.

What happens when the six days are up?

Trevor would be what he'd always been beneath the borrowed power: a packless nobody with a dormant wolf and a shattered reputation. Ryan would lose the Elder status he'd clung to for decades. Viviana would be left holding a pregnancy and a mate who could no longer protect either of them.

And I would be free.

I lay back on the bed. The bond-sickness was almost gone now. In its place was something else—something I didn't have a name for yet. It felt like potential. Like the moment before a storm breaks.

I closed my eyes.

Two more days.

---

That night, I dreamed of silver light.

It started at the base of my spine and spread upward, threading through my ribs, my shoulders, my throat. It didn't hurt. It felt like waking up after years of sleep.

In the dream, I stood in a clearing surrounded by pines. The moon was full overhead. My shadow stretched long across the ground, but it wasn't the right shape. It was too large. Too angular.

I looked down at my hands. They were still human, but the skin was glowing faintly, like light was leaking through from underneath.

Something inside me shifted. Not the bond—that was dead. This was different. Older. Deeper.

I woke with my heart pounding and my skin damp with sweat.

The motel room was dark. The clock read 4:47 a.m.

I sat up slowly and pressed my palm against my chest. My heartbeat was too fast, too strong. Like something was trying to break free.

I got out of bed and went to the bathroom. Turned on the light. Looked at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were the same. My face was the same. But something underneath had changed.

I turned off the light and went back to bed.

Two more days.

Whatever was coming, I would be ready.
