Chapter 4

Numbers don't lie. People do.

That was the first thing Dad ever taught me about pack administration. I was twelve, sitting cross-legged on the floor of his office while he walked me through Silvercrest's quarterly filings, his finger tracing the columns like he was reading scripture. *The wolves will spin you stories, Amora. The ledger just tells you what happened.*

I thought about that a lot, those first weeks in the cedar house, hunched over my laptop at the kitchen table while the wind came off the mountains and rattled the windows.

Silvercrest's public financial filings were a matter of regional pack record — required by Lycan law, accessible to any ranked wolf who knew where to look. I knew where to look. I'd written half those filings myself.

I started with the contractor accounts.

There were six new ones, all opened within two weeks of Fabian taking the Beta and Gamma duties. Generic names. Vague service descriptions. *Perimeter Maintenance Solutions. Northwest Territory Consulting. Allied Infrastructure Group.* The kind of names that sound legitimate until you try to find an actual address or a registered pack affiliation and come up empty.

I cross-referenced them against the border incident reports Reid was pulling through Mason and two other former Deltas who still trusted him. The correlation was immediate and ugly. Every time one of those contractor accounts received a payment, a border incident followed within the week. Not after. Before. The money moved first. Then Ironveil moved.

I sat back in my chair and looked at the pattern for a long time.

Aria was very still inside me.

*He's paying them,* she said quietly. *Fabian is paying the rogues and calling it maintenance.*

I already knew. But seeing it laid out in columns, clean and irrefutable, made something cold settle in my chest. Not anger. Not grief. Something quieter and more useful than either.

I pulled a fresh folder from the stack Reid had brought me from town. Manila. Crisp. I wrote two words on the tab in black marker.

*Fabian Fox.*

Then I opened a new document and started building.

---

Reid confirmed the rest eleven days later.

He came in from the cold with snow on his jacket and his jaw set at that particular angle that meant he was working very hard not to put his fist through something. He dropped his phone on the table in front of me without a word and went to stand at the window with his arms crossed.

I looked at the screen.

It was a message from one of his old Deltas — a wolf named Garrett who'd done two years on Silvercrest's eastern line and knew every inch of those patrol routes. Short message. No pleasantries. Just coordinates, timestamps, and a single line at the bottom.

*These are our restricted maps, Reid. Not public. Not guessable. Someone handed them over.*

I read it twice.

Ironveil's territorial gains over the past month — the ones Coleson was blaming on bad luck and leadership transition — mapped perfectly onto Silvercrest's classified defensive architecture. The blind spots. The rotation gaps. The emergency retreat corridors that only the Beta and Gamma were supposed to know.

Fabian had sold them. He'd sold the bones of the pack.

Bryce's face came to me then, unbidden. The Delta who'd died on the northern ridge. His little boy who'd just turned three.

I closed my eyes for three seconds. Then I opened them.

"Garrett," I said. "Is he safe?"

"Transferred out yesterday." Reid didn't turn from the window. "Took his family to his mate's pack. Smart wolf."

"Good."

I reached for a second folder. Wrote the name on the tab. Set it beside the first.

Reid finally turned around. He looked at the two folders, then at me. Something moved across his face — not quite relief, not quite grief. Something older than both.

"You're really doing this," he said. Not a question.

"I'm really doing this."

---

The social media thing happened on a Thursday.

I wasn't looking for it. Reid's old packmate Sienna sent me the link with a three-word message: *Thought you'd want to see.* I almost didn't open it.

It was a regional Luna gathering — a quarterly thing, hosted by one of the larger northern packs. Emory had attended in my place. Of course she had. She was Luna now.

She wore dusty rose. My color. The one I'd worn to three of those gatherings, the one the she-wolves there associated with me.

In the caption beneath the group photo, she'd used the exact phrase I coined in Silvercrest's community outreach framework two years ago. Word for word. *A pack's strength lives in its she-wolves.* My words. In her mouth. With her hand resting on her belly and a smile that knew exactly what it was doing.

The congratulatory messages came fast. She-wolves I'd mentored. Lunas I'd negotiated with. *You're such an inspiration, Luna Emory. Silvercrest is so lucky to have you.*

I read every one.

Then I closed the tab, opened the second dossier, and added a new section.

*Emory Fox. Psychological operations. Ongoing.*

I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel the sting behind my eyes that I might have felt two months ago. I felt something sharper and more patient than either.

She was performing for an audience that didn't know the curtain was already on fire.

I just needed to let it burn a little longer.
