Chapter 5

The envelope arrived on a Tuesday.

No return address. Gold-embossed. My name written in calligraphy so precise it looked machine-printed, except I knew it wasn't. Someone had taken their time with this.

I set my coffee mug down and picked it up.

The invitation was heavy cardstock, cream and gold, with Silvercrest's crest embossed at the top. Formal language. The kind of language I had once helped draft for pack ceremonies. *You are cordially invited to witness the sacred Mate Marking of Alpha Coleson Ellis and Luna-Designate Emory Fox…*

I read it once. Then I set it on the table.

The photographs were underneath.

Three of them. Printed on glossy paper, the kind you'd order from a photo shop, not something dashed off in a hurry. Someone had thought about this. Someone had chosen these specific images, printed them, tucked them beneath the invitation, and sealed the envelope.

I looked at all three.

Coleson. Emory. Their bedroom. Intimate enough that I understood exactly what message was being sent.

I set them beside the invitation, faceup, and sat with them for a moment.

Aria was very quiet inside me. Not wounded. Not frantic. Just watching, the way she'd learned to watch these past months — patient and still, like a wolf waiting at the edge of a clearing.

*She wants you to break,* Aria said.

I know.

*Are you broken?*

I looked at the photographs one more time. Then I turned them facedown, picked up my phone, and dialed.

---

Julian Vance was not a man who wasted words.

Dad had worked with him twice in the years before — once during a rogue incursion that crossed four pack territories, once during a disputed Alpha succession that nearly turned into open war. He'd described Julian as the kind of enforcer who made Alphas nervous just by walking into a room. Not because he raised his voice. Because he never had to.

We met at a neutral location, a private room above a restaurant two territories from Silvercrest. Julian arrived exactly on time, alone, in a dark coat with no pack insignia. He sat across from me, folded his hands on the table, and waited.

I opened the dossier.

I walked him through it methodically. The six contractor accounts Fabian had opened within his first two weeks. The payment timestamps against the border incident reports. The classified patrol routes that had surfaced in Ironveil's tactical movements — routes that only a Beta or Gamma should have known. The intercepted communications, carefully sourced through three separate channels, linking Emory directly to the coordination. Not peripheral. Central.

Julian didn't interrupt. He turned each page with the same unhurried attention, reading everything twice before moving on. His face gave nothing away.

When I finished, the room was quiet for a long moment.

Then he looked up at me.

He gave me a single nod.

"The ceremony," I said. "The Mate Ceremony at the Silvercrest great hall. That's when everything will be in one room."

"We'll be positioned outside," he said. His voice was exactly what I expected — low, even, carrying the kind of authority that didn't need volume. "When you give the signal, we move."

I closed the dossier and slid it across the table.

He picked it up without looking at it again. He already had everything he needed.

So did I.

---

The weeks before the ceremony were the quietest of my life.

I commissioned the gown through a designer in Portland — structured shoulders, clean lines, the pale silver-white of a Silvercrest winter moon. Not because I was trying to make a statement. Because I had earned that color, and I was done letting anyone else wear it.

Mornings, I walked the property with Jasper. He'd grown into his paws over the winter, a big, ridiculous dog who had no concept of his own size and tried to sit on my feet whenever I stood still for more than thirty seconds. I let him. The cold air came off the mountains sharp and clean, and I drank my coffee black and watched the light change over the tree line, and I thought about nothing in particular.

Reid found me one morning standing at the far edge of the property, eyes closed, face turned toward the wind.

"Hey." His voice was careful in the way it only got when he was trying not to ask something directly.

I opened my eyes.

"I've been ready for months," I said.

He looked at me for a moment. Then he nodded and didn't ask anything else.

---

The box arrived four days before the ceremony.

Unlabeled. No note. Omega handwriting on the packing tape — someone from Silvercrest's household staff following instructions they didn't understand. Inside was a small collection of things I'd left behind in the move. A scarf. Two books. A hair clip.

And at the bottom, wrapped in a piece of plain tissue paper, the leather bracelet Reid had made me.

I sat at the kitchen table and held it in both hands.

Reid came in from outside, stomped the mud off his boots, and stopped when he saw my face.

He crossed the room without a word. He took the bracelet from my hands, unclasped it, and fastened it back around my wrist. His fingers were cold from the outside air. He didn't say anything. Neither did I.

Outside, Jasper pressed his nose against the glass door and fogged it up, watching us.

I looked down at the bracelet on my wrist.

Four days.
