After My Alpha Chose Another Luna, I Rejected Him

The glittering halls of the Silverfang pack became my prison while I spent six agonizing years watching my fated mate, Baylor Fox, parade other she-wolves in front of me. Refusing to let him weaponize my devotion any longer, I am taking back my freedom. Tonight, I reject him.

Chapter 2

I spent three days doing what I do best: research.

Zain King didn't attend pack gatherings. He sent representatives. He operated through channels. The Lycan Prince was a name whispered in strategy rooms, not a body that showed up at summits where mid-tier Alphas jockeyed for territorial scraps. But intelligence—gathered through Moonveil's network of informants and one very expensive phone call to a rogue who owed me a favor—confirmed he would be at the Crescent Summit. Four days from now. Neutral territory. High-ranking Alphas only.

I told my father I was going alone.

"Audrey, you can't just walk into a summit without an invitation," Derek said, his Alpha authority fraying at the edges. He looked older than he had a week ago. Silverfang had already withdrawn two patrols from our eastern border. "Approaching a Lycan Prince without protocol is—"

"Suicide," I finished. "I know. But we're out of time, and I'm out of options that don't involve you bending the knee to someone weaker than Zain King. Would you prefer that?"

He didn't answer. We both knew Moonveil had maybe two weeks before the rogue packs testing our borders stopped testing and started taking.

I packed one bag. No escort. I drove through the night with the windows cracked, letting the cold air keep me sharp. The phantom pain from the severed bond flared every few hours—a hot, grinding ache behind my sternum that I had learned to breathe through. My wolf was quiet. She had been quiet since the rejection. I didn't push her. We were both grieving something we couldn't name.

The Crescent Summit was held in a restored estate on neutral ground—marble floors, vaulted ceilings, and enough territorial posturing to choke on. I arrived at dawn and walked through the main entrance like I had been invited. No one stopped me. Wolves stared. I felt their eyes track me across the foyer—some with pity, some with fascination. The she-wolf who rejected an Alpha at his own ascension ceremony. The one who walked out and didn't look back.

I ignored them.

The main hall was already filling. Alphas and their Betas clustered in territorial groups, voices low, eyes sharp. I scanned the room with the same precision I used for negotiation maps. There—across the hall, near the tall windows that overlooked the grounds. A delegation that didn't cluster. A Beta and Gamma flanking an empty chair. And standing apart from the crowd, his back to the room, a man whose presence made the surrounding wolves unconsciously create distance.

Zain King.

Even from across the hall, I could feel the weight of him. Not his scent—I was too far away for that—but his aura. It pressed against the room like atmospheric pressure before a storm. He was taller than I expected. Broader. He wore a dark suit that looked like it cost more than Moonveil's entire security budget, and he stood with the kind of stillness that apex predators have when they don't need to prove anything.

I crossed the room.

The Beta—Marcus, according to my research—stepped into my path before I got within ten feet. He was built like a wall and had the kind of face that didn't smile often. "The Lycan Prince is not receiving petitions today," he said quietly. Polite. Immovable.

I sidestepped him.

It wasn't aggressive. It was precise. I angled my body just enough that he would have to physically grab me to stop me, and grabbing an unmated she-wolf at a neutral summit was the kind of protocol violation that started incidents. He hesitated. I kept walking.

Zain turned.

His eyes hit me first—pale gold, cold, and utterly focused. Then his scent reached me, faint but unmistakable even at this distance: dark cedar and something sharper, like the air before lightning strikes. My wolf stirred. Not in fear. In recognition. I shoved the feeling down and met his gaze without dropping mine.

"Mr. King," I said. My voice came out steady. "My name is Audrey Collins. I have a proposal that will benefit both of us, and I'd like five minutes of your time to present it."

He didn't answer immediately. He looked at me the way someone examines a map—taking in information, cataloging details. His gaze flicked briefly to Marcus, who had moved up behind me, then back to my face.

"Sit down, Ms. Collins," he said.

His voice was low, quiet, and absolutely final. Not an invitation. A command that somehow didn't feel like one. He gestured toward the table beside us—a small strategy table set apart from the main gathering, with two chairs and a surface clear of everything except a single glass of water.

I sat. He remained standing for a moment longer, and I had the sudden, unshakable sense that he was deciding something. Then he sat across from me, folded his hands on the table, and waited.

I pulled the folded territorial analysis from my jacket pocket and spread it on the table between us. It was hand-drawn—my own work, updated two nights ago with the most recent intelligence on rogue movements, weakened borders, and alliance gaps along the Eastern seaboard. I had marked Moonveil's position in red. Silverfang's withdrawn patrols in black. The vacuum we were about to fall into in grey.

"I'm proposing a contract mating," I said. No preamble. No softening. "You need someone who understands territorial strategy and can manage the expansion you're planning into the southern corridor. I need military protection and resources to stabilize Moonveil Pack after Silverfang's alliance withdrawal. This benefits both of us."

Zain's gaze dropped to the map. He studied it for a long moment. When he looked back up, something in his expression had shifted—not softened, but sharpened, like I had confirmed something he already suspected.

"You're the negotiator who outmaneuvered Marcus three years ago," he said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"And you rejected your fated mate four days ago in front of three allied packs."

"Yes."

His mouth didn't smile, but something flickered in his eyes—approval, maybe, or recognition. He leaned back slightly in his chair, and the movement made him look even larger, even more unmovable.

"You're aware," he said quietly, "that a contract mating with a Lycan Prince will make you a target for every wolf who thinks you're overreaching."

"I'm already a target," I said. "At least this way, I'll have the resources to handle it."

Silence. He was still watching me with that unnerving focus, and I realized—too late to do anything about it—that I had just walked into the presence of the most dangerous wolf on the continent and offered him a deal that required him to trust me. My pulse kicked up. I kept my hands steady on the table.

Zain King leaned forward. His scent deepened, cedar and storm, and my wolf stirred again—stronger this time, insistent. He said, very quietly:

"I accept."

I blinked. "Just like that?"

"Just like that," he said. His gaze pinned me in place. "We'll draft terms tonight. You'll stay on my territory until the contract is finalized. Marcus will arrange transport."

Behind me, I heard Marcus make a sound—surprise, maybe, or disbelief. Zain's eyes didn't leave mine.

"One condition," he added. His voice dropped lower, and the command in it was unmistakable. "You don't negotiate with anyone else while this contract is active. No other Alphas. No other offers. You're mine to protect, which means you're mine to manage. Understood?"

The possessive edge in his tone should have set off alarms. Instead, my wolf practically purred. I forced my voice to stay level.

"Understood."

Zain stood. The movement was fluid, controlled, and it made every wolf within twenty feet turn their heads. He extended his hand across the table. I took it. His grip was warm, firm, and the moment our palms touched, I felt it—a pull, low and deep, like a current running beneath the surface of still water.

He felt it too. I saw his pupils dilate slightly, saw the tension in his jaw. But he didn't let go. He held my hand for one beat longer than necessary, then released me and stepped back.

"Welcome to the King territory, Ms. Collins," he said.

I stood, folded my map, and followed Marcus toward the exit. I didn't look back at the hall full of staring wolves. I didn't need to. I had just secured the most powerful ally on the Eastern seaboard.

And I had no idea what I'd actually just agreed to.
