Chapter 4

The pack gathering was scheduled for Saturday evening. I knew because Eleanor texted me the agenda three days in advance — a courtesy she'd maintained even after I'd left Shadowvale, a small thread of contact neither of us acknowledged directly.

I wasn't planning to attend. I had no reason to. The gathering was pack business, and I wasn't pack anymore. The bond scar on my neck was cold proof of that.

But Eleanor's text had included something unusual. A single line at the bottom, after the formal agenda items.

*Danielle has requested a public announcement. Henry approved it. I'm working on it.*

I read it twice. Then I set the phone down and stared at Buster, who was chewing a rope toy in the corner of my rental kitchen.

"Working on it," I said aloud.

Buster's tail thumped once. He had no opinion on Eleanor's cryptic warnings, but he had strong feelings about rope toys.

I made coffee. I opened my laptop. The Council tribunal summons sat in my inbox, formal and final. The date was set. The chamber was assigned. Everything was in motion.

Danielle's announcement, whatever it was, didn't matter.

Except it did. Because if she was pushing for a public declaration, it meant she thought she'd won something. And that meant Henry thought so too.

I closed the laptop. I drank my coffee. I did not drive to Shadowvale.

Later, Eleanor told me what happened.

The gathering had started normally. Pack members filtered into the common hall, filling the long tables, passing bread and pouring wine. Henry stood at the head table with Danielle at his side — a position she'd occupied increasingly often since my departure. She wore a dress the color of cream, something soft and deliberate, and her hand rested lightly on Henry's arm.

Eleanor sat three seats down, her face composed, her posture perfect.

Henry called the gathering to order. Routine business first. Territory reports. Patrol updates. A motion to expand the northern hunting grounds. All of it passed without incident.

Then Henry cleared his throat.

"Before we close," he said, "I have an announcement."

The hall quieted. Danielle's hand tightened on his arm — just slightly, Eleanor said, but visible if you were watching.

Henry looked down at Danielle. Smiled. The kind of smile that used to make pack members relax because their Alpha was happy, and a happy Alpha meant a stable pack.

"Danielle and I—" he began.

Eleanor stood.

Not dramatically. She simply rose from her seat, smoothed her skirt, and said in a voice that carried without shouting, "Point of order."

Henry stopped. Blinked. "Mother?"

"Council procedural law," Eleanor said calmly. "Section nine, subsection four. A pack Alpha under active Council review for bond violations may not formally recognize a new mate or Luna until the petition is resolved and the cooling period has elapsed."

The hall went very still.

Henry's smile didn't fade, but it froze. "This isn't a formal recognition. It's a personal announcement."

"The distinction," Eleanor said, still standing, still calm, "is not recognized by the Council. Any public declaration made before the pack in the Alpha's official capacity constitutes formal recognition. The cooling period is mandatory. Violation carries penalties."

She wasn't looking at Henry. She was looking at Marcus Reid, the Beta, who had gone pale.

Marcus cleared his throat. "She's right. I checked the filing this morning. The cooling period is... it's in effect."

Danielle's face went white. Then red. Her hand dropped from Henry's arm.

Henry stared at his mother. "You're blocking this."

"I'm citing pack law," Eleanor said. "Which you are bound to follow."

The silence stretched. Someone coughed. A chair scraped.

Henry's jaw worked. Then he turned back to the hall and said, in a voice that was almost steady, "Apologies. The announcement will wait until the appropriate time."

He sat down.

Danielle did not.

She stood there for three long seconds, her face rigid, her hands clenched at her sides. Then she turned and walked out of the hall. Her heels clicked against the stone floor, sharp and fast, and the door slammed behind her.

No one spoke.

Eleanor sat back down, picked up her wine glass, and took a single, measured sip.

The gathering resumed. Awkwardly. Quietly. But it resumed.

And in a study upstairs, Danielle paced in tight circles, her breath coming fast, her mind already working.

Two days later, Henry called me.

I didn't answer. He left a voicemail.

"Alexia." His voice was careful. Controlled. "I know you're preparing for the tribunal. I want you to know... I'm not trying to make this harder. I just want to move forward. For both of us."

A pause.

"Danielle's pregnant. With my pup. I thought you should hear it from me."

Another pause. Longer.

"I hope you're well."

The voicemail ended.

I set the phone down. Stared at it. Buster looked up from his blanket, ears pricked.

"She's pregnant," I said aloud.

Buster tilted his head.

I laughed. It came out sharp and cold and surprised me. I covered my mouth and laughed again.

Because of course she was.

Of course.

I deleted the voicemail. I made coffee. I opened the encrypted financial records I'd been keeping for three years and cross-referenced the timestamps on Danielle's payments.

The dates didn't line up.

Not if the pregnancy was Henry's.

I sat back. Drank my coffee. And smiled into the dark.

Eleanor arrived the next afternoon.

No warning. Just a knock on my door at two in the afternoon, and when I opened it she was standing on my porch in a charcoal coat with the sealed evidence file under her arm.

She looked tired.

"May I come in?" she asked.

I stepped aside.

She walked past me into the kitchen, set the file on the table, and stood there for a long moment without speaking.

"I tried," she said finally. "I tried to make him see. What he did. What he's doing. I failed."

I didn't answer.

Eleanor looked at me. Her eyes were dry but her face was drawn.

"The Council will call me," she said. "When the tribunal convenes. They'll ask me to testify."

"I know."

"I won't lie for him." Her voice was steady. "But I won't testify against him either. I can't."

I nodded slowly. "I understand."

"But this—" She touched the file. "This is yours. Everything in it. I kept copies because I thought... I don't know what I thought. That it might matter. That someone should know."

She slid the file across the table toward me.

"Use it," she said quietly. "Without mercy."

She turned and walked to the door. Stopped. Didn't turn back.

"He's my son," she said. "But you were my daughter. For three years. And I failed you too."

She left before I could respond.

I stood in my kitchen and stared at the file. Then I opened it.

Eleanor's notes were meticulous. Dates. Observations. Scent logs she'd kept independently, corroborating everything I'd documented. Witness statements from pack members who'd seen Danielle in places she shouldn't have been.

At the back, clipped to the final page, was a handwritten note.

*The healer can confirm bloodlines. If you need it.*

I read it three times.

Then I picked up my phone and called my Council liaison.

"I need to add a witness," I said. "Shadowvale's pack healer. For biological evidence."

There was a pause.

"Noted," the liaison said. "We'll issue the summons."

I hung up.

Buster padded over and pressed his nose into my palm.

I scratched behind his ears and stared at Eleanor's note.

*Without mercy,* she'd said.

I intended to.
