Chapter 5

The withdrawal notice arrived by courier at ten in the morning.

I wasn't there to see it. Eleanor told me later, in one of her carefully neutral phone calls that had become a strange rhythm between us — updates she delivered without commentary, facts she laid out like stones across a river I was no longer crossing.

"Crestmoor pulled their mutual defense agreement," she said. "Formal notice. Signed by their Alpha yesterday."

I set down my coffee. "Reason?"

"Changed circumstances. Concerns about pack stability." Eleanor's voice was dry. "Henry's in his office now. He's been there for three hours."

I could picture it. Henry at his desk, the notice spread in front of him, his jaw working as he read it again and again like repetition might change the words. Crestmoor had been one of Shadowvale's strongest external alliances. Strategic territory. Shared patrol routes. The kind of partnership that took years to build.

Gone.

"He thinks it's because of the Council petition," Eleanor continued. "He's convinced someone's been talking to rival packs. Spreading rumors. He had Marcus pull communication logs this morning."

I said nothing.

"Two other packs sent similar notices last month," Eleanor added quietly. "Smaller territories. Henry didn't tell anyone. But the Gamma knows. It's starting to spread."

I thanked her and hung up.

Buster looked up from his spot by the window, ears pricked. I reached down and scratched behind them, my hand moving on autopilot while my mind worked.

Three alliances. Gone. Henry would be looking for a leak, a traitor, someone inside Shadowvale feeding information to rivals. He wouldn't find one. Because the dismantling hadn't come from inside his pack.

It had come from someone whose authority made pack alliances irrelevant.

Someone who had been working quietly at the margins for years.

I didn't know that for certain. Not yet. But the pattern was too clean, too surgical. And Ethan's face at the rest stop — that careful, patient stillness — kept circling back through my memory.

I pushed the thought aside and walked to the kitchen table.

The evidence box sat where I'd left it. Sealed. Ready. Inside were three years of documentation, Eleanor's independent notes, financial records, scent logs. Everything the Council would need.

Beside it sat my notebook.

I'd carried it for three years. Battered leather cover, pages filled with cipher only I could read. Dates. Observations. The small, deliberate record of what I'd survived and what I'd refused to become inside it.

I hadn't opened it in weeks.

I sat down. Pulled it toward me. The leather was warm under my palm, worn smooth in places where my hands had gripped it too hard.

I opened it to the first page.

*September 14. Henry's scent in the east wing hallway at 2 a.m. Floral overlay. Not mine.*

I turned the page.

*September 22. Danielle at the pack house. Dinner meeting, Henry said. She stayed until midnight. I heard them laughing in his study.*

Another page. Pressed between the entries, a small white flower from the Shadowvale gardens. I'd picked it the morning after that dinner, walking the grounds alone before dawn because I couldn't sleep and the house felt too small.

I kept reading.

Three years, laid out in careful script. Not just violations. Not just evidence. The private accounting of a woman who had decided, very early, that she would not break. That she would document. That she would wait.

My wolf stirred.

Not the screaming, clawing thing that had howled through the rejection. This was different. Alert. Awake. Pressing against the inside of my ribcage like something vast trying to find more room.

I pressed my hand flat against the notebook cover. Held it there. Then I closed it, stood, and set it carefully in the evidence box with everything else.

It belonged there now.

I sealed the box. Labeled it. Set it by the door.

Tomorrow, the Council liaison would pick it up. Tomorrow, it would become part of the official record.

Tonight, it was still mine.

Buster padded over and leaned against my leg. I looked down at him, this scruffy mutt who had chosen me over an Alpha, who had bolted straight to a Lycan Prince like he'd been waiting for permission.

"Good boy," I said quietly.

His tail thumped once.

I made dinner. I ate. I did not think about Henry in his office, staring at withdrawal notices he couldn't explain. I did not think about alliances crumbling at the edges of his territory, quiet and surgical and impossible to trace.

I thought about the tribunal.

About walking into that chamber with my evidence and my cipher notebook and three years of patience that had never once looked like weakness to anyone who was actually paying attention.

My wolf pressed against my ribs again. Waiting.

I went to bed early.

***

The next morning, Eleanor called again.

"Marcus filed the defense brief," she said without preamble. "I got a copy. Thought you should know what you're walking into."

"Send it."

The file arrived ten minutes later. I opened it on my laptop and started reading.

The brief was thorough. Professionally formatted. Argued with the kind of condescending precision that made my jaw tighten with every paragraph.

*The respondent, Alexia Voss, served as Luna of Shadowvale Pack for three years. During this time, she demonstrated no capacity for wolf transformation, produced no heir, and contributed negligible strategic value to pack operations. Under traditional pack law, an Alpha holds the right — and indeed the responsibility — to reject a mate whose inadequacy threatens the pack's strength, continuity, and hierarchical stability.*

I read it twice.

Then I read the next section.

*The petitioner's claim of bond violation rests on the premise that the mate bond, once established, carries unconditional obligations regardless of the mated pair's functional compatibility. However, precedent clearly establishes that wolfless or low-wolf omegas occupy a separate legal category, wherein the Alpha's discretion in mate retention is granted broader latitude due to the biological and strategic imperatives of pack leadership.*

I set the laptop down.

Stood.

Walked to the window.

Buster watched me from his blanket, ears forward.

Marcus had built the entire defense on the assumption that I was weak. Wolfless. Unremarkable. An omega whose inadequacy justified her rejection.

He'd cited precedent. Exploited gaps in mate-bond protections. Framed Henry's betrayal as responsible leadership.

It was procedurally sound.

It was also about to detonate in his face.

Because Marcus Reid had never seen my wolf.

No one had.

I walked back to the table, opened my phone, and texted my Council liaison.

*Received the defense brief. No changes to my testimony. Proceeding as scheduled.*

The reply came immediately.

*Understood. Tribunal convenes in four days. Chamber assignments confirmed.*

I set the phone down.

Four days.

I looked at the evidence box by the door. At Buster, who had chosen a Lycan Prince over an Alpha without hesitation. At the cold scar on my neck that had stopped hurting weeks ago and now just felt... empty.

My wolf stirred again. Bigger this time. Restless.

I pressed my hand against my ribs and whispered, "Soon."

She settled.

Waiting.
