Chapter 3

The phantom scent started three days after I left.

I didn't know that then. I learned it later, from Eleanor, who called me on a Tuesday morning with her voice carefully neutral and told me Henry had stripped the sheets from his bed at two in the morning and burned them in the courtyard fire pit.

"He's not sleeping," she said.

"That's not my problem."

"I know." A pause. "But I thought you should know."

I thanked her and hung up. Buster looked up from his blanket in the corner, ears pricked. I scratched behind them and went back to my coffee.

Later, Eleanor told me the rest. How Henry had started avoiding the east corridor where I used to take my morning coffee. How he'd changed his running route through the forest, then changed it again when the scent followed him to the new path. How he'd stood in his office one afternoon, alone, and caught my fragrance so clearly he'd turned toward the door expecting to see me there.

The hallway had been empty.

His wolf, she said, was weakening. Not dramatically. Not in a way the pack would notice yet. But Eleanor had raised an Alpha. She knew what a healthy wolf looked like, and Henry's wasn't.

The bond, even severed, left echoes.

I felt nothing.

My mark had gone cold and numb and stayed that way. My wolf — that small, suppressed thing — had stopped screaming and settled into a watchful quiet that felt less like grief and more like patience. Waiting for something I couldn't name yet.

The call came a week later.

Eleanor again. Professional this time. Clipped.

"Henry wants to arrange a handoff. The dog. He says it's a shared asset and legally requires a neutral-territory exchange."

I set down my coffee. "Buster isn't an asset."

"I know. But he's insisting. He's framing it as property transfer. Clean break."

I could hear what she wasn't saying. Henry wanted to see me. Needed to see me. Was manufacturing a reason because he couldn't admit the real one.

"Fine," I said. "Neutral ground. I'll text you a location."

"Alexia—"

"I'll be there."

I hung up before she could say whatever she'd been about to say.

***

The handoff site was a rest stop off Highway 9, halfway between Shadowvale and nowhere. Concrete picnic tables. A vending machine that hadn't worked in years. Trees pressing close on three sides.

I arrived early. Buster sat in the passenger seat, watching the tree line with his ears forward. I'd told him we were going for a ride. I hadn't told him who we were meeting. He'd figure it out soon enough.

Henry's truck pulled in at exactly the agreed time. Punctual. He'd always been punctual.

He got out. Stood beside the driver's door. Didn't approach.

I opened my door. Buster jumped down and pressed against my leg, a warm solid weight. I clipped on his leash and walked forward. Slow. Controlled.

Henry looked terrible.

Not in an obvious way. His shirt was pressed. His jaw was shaved. But there were shadows under his eyes that hadn't been there two weeks ago, and his aura — that Alpha presence that used to fill every room he entered — felt dimmed. Muted. Like a light burning through a dirty glass.

His eyes tracked to the mark on my neck. The cold scar. Then away.

"Alexia," he said.

I didn't answer. I stopped six feet from him and waited.

"I thought—" He stopped. Started again. "This is cleaner. For both of us. Shared assets. We should—"

"He's not an asset," I said quietly. "But if you want him, take him."

I held out the leash.

Buster growled.

Low. Continuous. A sound I'd never heard from him before. His ears went flat. His tail tucked. He pulled backward, straining against the leash, and the growl climbed into something sharper.

Henry froze.

"Buster," he said. Coaxing. "Come on, boy. It's me."

Buster's growl got louder.

And then he bolted.

The leash jerked out of my hand. I lunged for it and missed. Buster tore across the gravel lot, ears back, legs pumping, and I turned to chase him and stopped.

Because Buster hadn't run toward the trees.

He'd run toward the man standing twenty feet behind Henry's truck.

Ethan Graves.

I hadn't seen him arrive. Hadn't heard his car. He was simply there, leaning against the hood of a black sedan with his arms crossed and his Lycan aura so carefully muted I'd missed it entirely.

Buster skidded to a halt at Ethan's feet, tail wagging, and shoved his nose into Ethan's palm.

Ethan looked down. His mouth didn't quite smile, but something in his face softened. He knelt — slow, deliberate — and scratched behind Buster's ears with the kind of attention that made it clear he'd done this before. Or wanted to. For a long time.

Buster leaned into his hand and sighed.

I stared.

Henry turned. Saw Ethan. His whole body went rigid.

"What are you doing here?" Henry's voice was flat. Controlled. His Alpha tone trying to surface and failing because Lycan royalty didn't answer to pack Alphas and both of them knew it.

Ethan didn't look up from Buster. "Neutral ground," he said mildly. "I'm neutral."

"This is pack business."

"No." Ethan's voice stayed quiet. "This is a property handoff on unclaimed territory. Which makes it no one's business."

He straightened. Buster stayed pressed against his leg, panting happily, like he'd found exactly where he was supposed to be.

Henry's jaw worked. He looked at me. Then at Ethan. Then at Buster, who had never growled at him before tonight and was now wagging his tail at a man Henry had never seen him meet.

"This isn't over," Henry said.

He got in his truck. The engine started. Gravel sprayed as he reversed too fast and pulled onto the highway without looking back.

I stood very still.

Ethan watched the taillights disappear. Then he looked at me.

"You should keep the dog," he said.

Buster's tail thumped agreement against Ethan's shin.

I managed, barely, "You didn't have to come."

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

Ethan's eyes held mine. Steady. Patient. Like he'd been waiting years to answer that question and still wasn't sure I was ready to hear it.

"Because he shouldn't be alone with you," Ethan said quietly. "Not anymore."

He handed me Buster's leash. Our fingers didn't touch. He stepped back.

"I'll follow you home," he added. "Make sure you get there."

He got in his car before I could argue.

I stood in the empty rest stop with Buster leaning against my leg and Ethan's taillights glowing red in the dark, and for the first time since the bond broke, I felt something other than cold.

***

Three days later, Ethan knocked on my door.

No warning. No call. Just three precise knocks at nine in the morning, and when I opened the door he was standing on my rental porch in a charcoal suit with a leather folder under one arm and his Lycan aura so carefully controlled I could barely feel it.

Buster, who growled at every unfamiliar werewolf who came within ten feet of the house, walked straight up to him and sat.

"Miss Voss," Ethan said. Formal. Professional. "May I come in?"

I stepped aside.

He walked past me into the small kitchen, set the folder on the table, and waited until I'd closed the door before speaking again.

"The Lycan Council takes bond violation cases seriously," he said. "Your filing is strong. Unusually so. I thought you might benefit from precedent cases and legal contacts within the Court."

I looked at the folder. Then at him.

"Why are you here?"

"I just told you."

"No." I crossed my arms. "Why is a Lycan Prince personally managing the logistics of a rejected Luna's Council filing?"

Ethan's mouth didn't smile, but his eyes changed. Something careful. Something that had been waiting.

"Because your case matters," he said quietly.

That wasn't an answer. We both knew it.

I sat. He sat across from me. Buster padded over, circled twice, and lay down at Ethan's feet.

I watched my dog — who trusted no one — fall asleep against a Lycan Prince's shoe.

Ethan opened the folder and started talking. Precedents. Procedures. Legal channels I'd need. His voice was steady and professional and gave away absolutely nothing.

But his eyes, when they met mine, were patient.

Like he'd been waiting a very long time.

And could wait longer.
