Chapter 2

By the end of the first week, Sophia was making breakfast in my kitchen.

"Pancakes with chocolate chips," she announced when I came down. "Ryan said you never make them."

"Because he's ten and it's a Tuesday," I said.

Ryan didn't even look at me. He had syrup on his chin and Sophia's hand in his hair.

"Aunt Sophia, are you coming to the science fair?"

"Wouldn't miss it, sweetheart."

"Mom doesn't have to come."

Margaret sipped her tea at the end of the table. "Of course she doesn't. Sophia has it handled."

I poured my coffee and said nothing. The mug burned my palm, and I held it anyway.

That was how it went. Sophia signed his permission slips. Sophia packed his lunches, with little notes inside. Sophia sat with Margaret in the garden and rubbed her shoulders and laughed at stories I'd heard forty times.

When Ryan kicked a hole in the hallway wall, Sophia said, "He's just frustrated. Boys need to get it out."

When I told him to apologize, Margaret said, "Must you be so cold, Nora?"

---

The report card came on a Thursday.

A C in math. A D in reading. Ryan had been an A student since first grade.

I sat down across from him at the dining table and slid the paper over.

"Can we talk about this?"

He glanced at it and shrugged. "It's fine."

"It's not fine, honey. You're smarter than this. Maybe we should do homework together again after dinner, like we used to—"

He grabbed his reading book and slammed it on the floor. The spine cracked open.

"Aunt Sophia never pushes me!"

"I'm not pushing you. I'm asking you to try."

"You're always asking me something!" His face went red. "You're the worst mom in the whole world!"

Margaret appeared in the doorway like she'd been waiting behind it.

"What is all this shouting?"

"He threw his book," I said.

"Because you're hounding him." She crossed the room and put her arm around Ryan. "What else can you do besides control this child? You don't work. You don't cook anything worth eating. All you do is nag."

"I gave up my job to raise him."

"And look how well that turned out."

Ryan pressed his face into her sweater. I couldn't see his expression, only his shoulders, moving with something that might have been a sob, or might have been a laugh.

Ethan came in from the garage, keys still in his hand. He looked at the book on the floor, then at me.

"What happened?"

"His grades dropped," I said. "I tried to talk to him."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Nora. Can you learn to be gentler? Just once?"

I stared at him.

This was the man who'd proposed to me on a pier in the rain. The man who'd said, *You're the smartest person I've ever met, and I'm terrified you'll figure out you can do better.* He'd held my face in both hands when he said it.

Now he wouldn't even let me finish a sentence.

"Gentler," I said.

"You know what I mean."

"No, Ethan. I really don't."

He sighed like I'd asked him to carry something heavy. Then he picked Ryan up, though Ryan was far too big to be carried, and took him upstairs.

---

Sophia found me in the laundry room that night.

"You know," she said, leaning on the doorframe, "it's okay to be a little jealous."

I kept folding Ryan's shirts. "Of what?"

"Of how easy it is for me." She smiled. "Kids just like me. Ethan likes me. Margaret likes me. It's not your fault, Nora. Some women just don't have the touch."

"Get out of my laundry room."

"Our laundry room," she said softly, and walked away humming.

---

Three days later, I was slicing onions for dinner when Sophia came in behind me.

"Need help?"

"No."

She reached past me anyway and picked up the second knife from the block. I heard the blade hit the cutting board once. Twice.

Then she gasped.

I turned. She was holding her left hand up, and blood was running down her wrist in a thin bright line.

"Sophia, what did you—"

She screamed. A real scream, loud and high, the kind that brings a whole house running.

"Ethan! *Ethan!*"

He was there in seconds. Margaret right behind him. Ryan on the stairs.

"What happened?"

Sophia's eyes filled with tears like someone had turned on a faucet. "I was just trying to help her," she whispered. "And she shoved me. Into the counter. The knife—"

"I didn't touch her," I said.

Ethan grabbed a dish towel and wrapped her hand. He didn't look at me.

"Ethan. I didn't touch her. She picked up the knife herself."

"Why would I cut myself?" Sophia sobbed. "Why would anyone do that?"

Margaret's mouth thinned into a line. "I always knew this would happen."

"You *knew*?" I laughed. I couldn't help it. It came out of me sharp and ugly, and everybody flinched. "You knew I'd push a woman into a knife over onions?"

"Listen to her," Margaret said. "She's laughing."

Ethan finally lifted his eyes to mine. They were cold in a way I'd never seen before.

"What exactly do you want to turn this family into, Nora?"

"I want you to ask me what happened."

"I can see what happened."

"You saw *nothing*. You were in the garage. Ask her why she was holding the knife. Ask her why there's no mark on the counter. Ask her—"

"Enough."

"Ethan, please. Eight years. Have I ever lied to you?"

He held Sophia against his chest. She was trembling. She was also, I noticed, watching me over his shoulder, the same way she had at the birthday party.

"I'm taking her to urgent care," he said. "Don't be here when we get back. In the kitchen, I mean. Just stay in your room."

My room. The guest room.

The front door shut. Ryan stood on the bottom stair, his small hand on the railing.

"You hurt her," he said.

"Baby, I didn't."

He ran back up before I could reach him.

---

The guest room had a twin bed, a lamp with a crooked shade, and one mirror on the back of the door.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and didn't turn on the light for a long time.

I thought about my old office. The window that looked at the river. The way my team used to bring me their problems and wait, trusting, for me to solve them. I thought about Jess and Carla and the Friday dinners I'd stopped going to because Ryan had a cold, then a recital, then nothing at all — I just stopped. I thought about the promotion letter I'd folded into a drawer the same week I quit.

I'd had a whole life. I'd handed it over piece by piece, and no one had ever said thank you.

I stood up and flicked on the lamp.

The woman in the mirror had flour on her sleeve and onion on her fingers. Her hair was pulled back with a rubber band. Her eyes looked older than thirty-four.

"Why are you still here?" I asked her.

She didn't answer. She just stared back, waiting, like she'd been waiting for years.

Nobody in this house loved me. Not my husband. Not his mother. Not even the boy I'd carried for nine months and rocked to sleep a thousand nights.

So why was I staying?

On the nightstand, my phone lay face down, exactly where I'd left it. The voicemail was still there. Unplayed.

I picked it up.

My thumb hovered over the screen.
