Chapter 3

The alarm went off at six-thirty. I shut it off and stayed in bed, listening to the house get itself ready without me.

At seven, Ryan's feet hit the floor upstairs. At seven-ten, the shower ran in the master bathroom.

At seven-twenty, nothing happened. No bacon. No coffee. No shirt laid out on the bed.

That's when the floorboards in the hallway started complaining.

I unzipped my suitcase on the guest-room bed and started with the hangers.

Margaret appeared in the doorway with her robe tied over her nightgown. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Packing."

"Very funny." She folded her arms. "You've made your point. Go make the boy his breakfast."

"He's got hands."

Her chin came up. "Nora."

I took the gray sweater off the hanger and folded it flat. Three pairs of jeans. The shirt from my old office, still creased at the collar.

"Nora. Answer me."

"I'm leaving."

She didn't move for a second. Then she stepped into the room and closed the door behind her, which was the first thing she'd done all year that felt honest.

"You can't leave," she said. "Where would you even go?"

"That's mine to figure out."

"What about Ryan? You'd walk out on your own child?"

I picked up the second suitcase. "Ryan's ten. When he wants me, he knows my number."

"He won't call you. He's got Sophia now."

"Good. Then he won't miss anything."

She stood there with her mouth open, and for one strange moment I saw her as something other than Margaret — just an old woman in a robe who'd built her whole life on being the one who decided things.

"Everything in this house came from Ethan," she said. "The car. The food on your plate. Do you understand that?"

I zipped the suitcase.

"The clothes were on my body while I was earning a paycheck," I said. "That counts."

"You were a secretary."

"I ran a department, Margaret. You knew that. You just never said it out loud."

---

Ethan came down at seven-forty with his hair still wet and his phone in his hand.

He stopped on the last step. Took in the suitcase by the door. Then he laughed.

"Nora. Come on."

"I made eggs," Sophia called from the kitchen. "There's plenty."

Ethan waved at her to wait. "Whatever this is, it's a stunt. You've made your point, okay? I heard you. I'll ask her to be more careful with you."

"Careful."

"You know what I mean."

"No," I said. "I really don't."

I walked past him into the dining room and set the folder down on the table, square in the middle, next to the bowl of chocolates Margaret put out for guests.

He followed me. Picked it up. Opened it.

Divorce petition. Two copies. My signature already dry.

He stared at the page for a long time. When he lifted his head, his face had gone somewhere I'd never seen before — mouth open, eyes wide, like a man who'd walked into a room and found the furniture rearranged.

"You're divorcing me over Sophia?"

"No."

"Then what? The thing in the kitchen? She cut her own hand by accident and you—"

"Ethan." I waited until he shut up. "It isn't because of her. It's because I finally stopped begging you to love me."

The words landed and stayed there. Somewhere behind me, Sophia's spatula went quiet.

"That's ridiculous," he said. "I married you. We have a son. I work all day for this house—"

"You do. You work. And then you come home and you don't look at me. Not once. Eight years, and the only time you face me is when someone tells you I did something wrong."

He rubbed his jaw. "So this is about attention."

"You still don't hear me."

"I hear you fine. I hear you being dramatic on a Tuesday morning because your feelings got bruised."

"I'm not angry," I said. "That's what you don't get. I woke up this morning and I wasn't angry. I just didn't want to make anybody's eggs."

---

A floorboard creaked on the stairs.

Ryan stood halfway up, one sock on, hair stuck to his forehead. He looked at the suitcase, then at the folder in his father's hands, then at me.

"Mom?"

"Yes, baby."

"Are you really leaving?"

His voice cracked on *leaving*, and something in my chest pulled hard the way it always had. I'd spent ten years letting that pull decide everything.

I didn't this time.

"Ryan," I said. "When Sophia lives here, you're happy. Right?"

He glanced away. "She's nicer to me."

"Then stay with her."

He blinked. His mouth worked, but nothing came out.

"Mom, that's not—"

"I'm not mad at you." I crouched down so we were at the same height, and I said it slowly, so he'd remember it later. "If you think Sophia is better than me, then live with her. But you should know that I heard every word you said at your birthday. And I'm still going to love you. Just not in this house."

He looked at Ethan, quickly, the way he did whenever he needed the answer handed to him.

Ethan didn't give him one.

Ryan stood there frozen with his hand on the railing, and I stood up.

---

Ethan caught my arm at the door.

"Nora. Wait. We can talk about this."

"We've been talking for eight years."

"I'll tell her to go. Is that what you want? I'll tell Sophia to leave today."

"You see?" I said. "You'd do it for a fight. You wouldn't do it for me."

His grip tightened. I pulled my arm free and pushed him off, flat, one hand to his chest, and he staggered back a step because no one in this house had ever expected me to push.

"Don't touch me."

Margaret was in the hallway with her arms crossed. Sophia stood in the kitchen doorway holding the spatula, her bandaged hand tucked against her ribs, watching me with a small, patient expression, like she was waiting out weather.

"After everything this family gave you," Margaret said.

"Thank you for the recipe cards," I said.

I picked up both suitcases. I left the drone in the closet for Ryan, wrapped in the same paper he'd never opened.

The last thing I took from the house was the old photo album off the bottom shelf — not the wedding album, not the vacation albums, the one from before all of it. My parents on a porch. Me at nineteen with a terrible haircut. My college roommates holding up a diploma. My life, back when it was mine.

The door closed behind me by itself. Nobody held it.

---

Outside, the morning was bright and ordinary, and the sprinkler across the street was on, and a man was walking a dog.

I didn't cry.

For a second I waited to feel it — the failure, the shame, the crush of everything I'd just set down. And what came instead was lighter, and stranger.

I hadn't surrendered. I'd handed in my resignation.

I rolled the suitcase to the end of the drive and stopped under the maple where Ryan used to hunt for cicada shells. My phone was in my coat pocket. It had buzzed twice on the way down the hall.

One new voicemail. Same number I'd deleted twice and never forgotten.

The icon was still unplayed. My thumb found it anyway.
