Chapter 3

I don't know how I got there. One moment I was standing over my own frozen footprints, and the next I was somewhere else entirely — a squat gray monitoring hut, wind screaming against a tin roof, a single bulb swinging on its cord. Finnegan sat hunched over a radio, static hissing through his fingers like something alive.

"Base camp, this is remote two, come in." His voice was raw. He'd been saying it for a while. "I need a status check on Morrison. Repeat, status check on Morrison."

A long pause. Then Marcus's voice, flat and bored. "She's unavailable."

"Unavailable how?" Finnegan's knuckles went white around the receiver. "Define unavailable."

Static. Then nothing at all.

I watched him set the radio down very carefully, the way you set down something you want to throw. He sat there for three full seconds — I counted them, the way I used to count strokes underwater — and then he was up, grabbing his parka off the hook, shoving his feet into boots he hadn't bothered to lace.

"Something's wrong," he said to the empty room. "Something's been wrong for weeks and I let them ship me out here anyway."

He didn't wait for permission. He didn't file a report. He just opened the door into a wall of white and started walking, head down, into a storm that would have turned back anyone with less to lose.

I wanted to tell him it was already too late. I wanted to tell him a lot of things. I had no mouth to do it with.

---

By the time I found my way back to camp, the light had gone the color of a bruise, and the training pool steamed under floodlights like something boiling.

Alicia was already in the water.

She went under with a small, theatrical shriek, arms flailing just enough to look real and not enough to actually drown, and when she surfaced she was sobbing — big, heaving, camera-ready sobs, water sluicing down a face arranged into perfect distress.

"She pushed me," Alicia gasped, to no one in particular, to everyone. "Maeve — she just — she came at me and she pushed—"

Two junior techs stood at the pool's edge, arms crossed against the cold, eyes fixed on some point past Alicia's shoulder. I recognized them. I'd taught one of them how to check a regulator seal three weeks ago.

"We saw it," the taller one said. His voice had no weight behind it, like a line read off a card. "We saw Maeve push her."

He didn't look at Alicia. He didn't look at anyone.

They pulled her out wrapped in towels, and she wept beautifully into someone's shoulder, and I stood at the pool's edge — dripping in memory only, gold medal cold against a collarbone that no longer existed — and understood that I was being erased twice. Once by ice. Once by a story.

---

They gathered the team in the mess tent an hour later. Leon stood at the head of the long table with his hands flat on the wood, and I saw the muscle in his jaw working before he even opened his mouth.

"I want to be very clear about something." His voice carried to every corner of the tent. "What happened at that pool is not acceptable. Not from anyone. Especially not from my wife."

Nobody moved. Priya's eyes were on her boots.

"When Maeve decides to come back from her little stunt out there," Leon went on, and something in me went very still at the word *stunt*, "she is going to kneel. Right here. On the ice. In front of every single person in this camp. And she is going to apologize to Alicia."

He let that sit. He liked the silence. He'd always liked a room that had nowhere else to look.

"If she won't do that," he said, "she's off this expedition. Permanently. And I mean permanently, in every sense of the word."

I heard the shape of the threat under his words — not just the dive team, not just the tent, but the ten years, the apartment in Anchorage, the dog he'd kicked, the name I'd taken because I'd wanted, so badly, to belong to something.

He was ending a marriage to a woman lying face-down in the snow twenty meters from where he stood, and he didn't know it, and some part of him wouldn't have cared if he had.

I waited for the old ache to rise up in me — the reflex, ten years deep, that always found some way to make this my fault, some angle where if I'd been softer, quieter, better, none of this would be happening.

It didn't come.

I stood in the doorway of that tent and watched my husband defend a woman who had murdered me, and felt something inside my chest close like a fist going still after it finally stops shaking.

Not rage. Not yet.

Just quiet. A terrible, total quiet, the kind that comes after a door is shut for the last time, and you realize you were the one holding the handle the whole time — and you finally, finally, let go.
