Chapter 4

The memory came without warning, the way they all did now — like a door blown open by wind I couldn't feel anymore.

Our tent. Three nights before the dive. A headlamp propped on a folded sweater, throwing a small circle of light onto a page. Leon's breathing behind me, slow and even, the breathing of a man who slept like nothing in the world could touch him.

I watched myself write. My handwriting was small and careful, the way it always got when I was trying to make myself believe something.

*If I complete this scout dive perfectly — no errors, no hesitation — he'll finally see what I bring to this team. To us. He'll choose me. I just have to be better.*

I read it twice over my own shoulder. Then a third time, because some part of me kept hoping the words would rearrange themselves into something less pathetic.

They didn't.

I wanted to grab that woman by the shoulders and shake her until the pen fell out of her hand. I wanted to tell her there was no version of *better* that would ever be enough, that she was trying to fill a bucket with a hole punched clean through the bottom. I wanted to tell her to close the journal, wake him up, and ask him — just once — to look at her like she was the only person in the room.

I couldn't. I hadn't been able to then, either.

She closed the journal. She turned off the headlamp. She lay down next to a man who wouldn't notice if she disappeared, and she went to sleep believing tomorrow would fix it.

I stayed with the dark a long time after the memory let me go.

---

Back in the present — if that word still meant anything to me — the storm had thinned to a hard, dry wind. Leon came out of the mess tent like a man walking off an argument he'd already won in his head.

"Pack her gear," he said to no one, to the air, practicing the sentence he planned to say later, in front of everyone. "She wants to act like this, she can pack up and go home."

He was still riding the high of the tent, of the table under his palms, of thirty people staring at their boots while he decided my fate out loud. He liked being the one who decided things. He always had.

He rounded the corner of the equipment tent, and I drifted after him, weightless, useless, a woman-shaped piece of weather.

And then he stopped.

I felt it before I understood it — some old, cellular instinct kicking in, even though I no longer had cells to kick. A figure stood in the snow outside the tent flap. Facing away. Perfectly still. Arms at odd angles, one reaching, frozen mid-motion, like a photograph of someone caught between one heartbeat and the next.

"Maeve." His voice had an edge of impatience in it, the same edge it always had when I made him wait. "Maeve, don't do this. Turn around and look at me."

She didn't move.

"I'm not playing this game." He took a step. Snow crunched, too loud in the flat gray air. "You want to stand out here and sulk, fine. But you're going to apologize to Alicia tonight, in front of everyone, or I swear to God—"

He reached out and grabbed her shoulder.

I heard the crack before I understood what it was. A small, dry sound, like a branch giving under boot. Then a second crack, sharper, spreading.

He spun her toward him.

Her face came around white and glassy, eyes open, lashes furred with frost, lips slightly parted the way mine had been the moment the cold finally won. For half a second she just hung there in his grip, a woman made of ice standing in the shape a woman used to stand in.

Then she broke.

Not fell. Broke — shoulder splitting from collar, torso fracturing along some fault line only the cold had known about, pieces peeling away in sheets and shards, crystalline, catching the gray light like broken glass thrown across snow. Her arm — my arm — snapped off clean at the elbow and stayed in his hand, weightless, frost-laced, pale as bone china.

He stared at it.

I watched my husband hold a piece of me and fail, completely, to understand what he was holding. His mouth opened. Nothing came out. He looked down at the fragment, up at the ruin scattered across the snow — a hand here, a curve of shoulder there, my face in three pieces near his boot, eyes still open, still looking at nothing — and something in his expression finally, finally cracked to match.

He dropped the arm. It hit the ice and shattered further, a soft, terrible chime.

The silence afterward had a texture to it. Total. Airless.

Then he started screaming.

Not words at first. Just sound, raw and animal, tearing out of him in a register I had never once heard him use for me — not in ten years, not at our wedding, not the night he proposed on a terrace strung with borrowed light.

"Maeve—" It broke apart in his throat. "Maeve. *Maeve.*"

He said my name like it might put me back together.

It didn't.
