Chapter 2

The mess tent glowed orange from the space heater in the corner. Leon sat across from Alicia with his tray pushed aside, elbows on the table, the posture of a man settling in for a long complaint.

"She's been unbearable since we got here," he said. He rubbed his jaw. "Every little thing. You'd think I forgot her birthday, not planned an entire expedition."

Alicia's face did something soft and careful. She reached across the table and touched his forearm, just for a second, just long enough. "Leon. I don't want to say something out of line."

"Say it."

"I think maybe..." She looked down at her wine glass, turned it a quarter inch. "I think she might be jealous. Of us. Of how easy this all is between us."

Leon laughed, short and surprised, like she'd handed him something he'd been groping for in the dark. "God. That's exactly it. That's exactly what it is." He reached for the bottle and topped off her glass, careful not to spill a drop. "She's never been good at sharing me. Not with the expedition. Not with anybody."

I stood in the corner where the canvas met the tent pole, and I watched him say this the way you'd watch weather happen to somebody else's house.

He wasn't wondering where I was. He wasn't wondering if I was cold, or hurt, or lying face-down in the snow with frost already stitched into my eyelashes. He was refilling her glass.

Ten years, I thought. Ten years of learning exactly how much space I was allowed to take up in a room, and here was the final number. Zero.

I drifted out of the tent because there was nothing else to do with my hands.

---

Outside, the camp moved like a machine that had already forgotten I was ever part of it.

Alicia crossed the snow toward the communications tent, unhurried, her parka hood down despite the cold, like she wanted to be recognized. She leaned into the doorway. Marcus looked up from his console.

"Everything logged clean?" she asked. Quiet. Almost bored.

Marcus's eyes went to the corner of his screen, to a number I couldn't see but somehow understood anyway. "Clean," he said.

"Good man." She patted the doorframe, twice, like you'd pat a horse, and walked on.

I followed her because I didn't know yet that I could stop.

She passed Priya near the equipment racks. Priya was coiling cable, and when she saw Alicia coming her hands slowed down, then stopped altogether. Alicia didn't say anything. She just looked at her. A long, level, unhurried look, the kind you give a door to make sure it's locked.

Priya's throat moved. She went back to coiling the cable, faster now, and didn't look up again.

I understood, standing there in the blue dark with no breath to catch, that I had walked into every room believing chaos was the enemy. Bad weather. Bad luck. A rope that came loose by accident.

But there was no chaos here. There was only architecture. A bribe here, a look there, a reassignment three weeks ago that had put the one man who might have fought for me somewhere too far away to hear the beacon. Every door I might have crawled through had already been quietly bricked shut, and the woman doing the bricking hadn't even broken a sweat.

This wasn't an accident.

This was a project. And I was the only person on the ice who hadn't been told the deadline.

---

Somewhere behind my eyes — if I still had eyes, if there was still a behind — a memory surfaced on its own, uninvited, the way water finds the lowest point in a room.

The championship. Ten years ago. The blue tile of the pool deck, and the black water waiting below the blocks, and my body screaming at me the way it always screamed before a big dive — the lake, the ice, my father's shouting, the cold closing over my nine-year-old chest.

I dove anyway. I always dove anyway.

Somewhere past the halfway mark, the panic came for me the way it always did, clean and total, my throat sealing, my vision tunneling to a single bright point. I kept my strokes even. I counted. I climbed out of my own body and made it swim without me.

I surfaced first. Gold. My hand went up before my lungs had finished working.

I looked for him. Water in my eyes, medal weight not yet around my neck, and I looked for Leon's face in the crowd the way you look for the one thing that will make the pain worth having survived.

He was at the finish line. His arms were around Alicia — she'd only managed the event logistics, timing sheets, a clipboard — and his face was lit up bright and easy, the exact smile I had been diving toward for four minutes underwater.

The photo went out that night. *Explorer Celebrates with Partner.*

I stood at the pool's edge, dripping, gold going cold against my collarbone, and nobody in that photograph was looking for me at all.

I told myself it didn't matter. I kept swimming.

I always kept swimming.
