After I Faked My Death to Escape My Husband Chapter 1

The white silk bridal robe felt light on my shoulders. Through the penthouse windows, the morning sun poured over Central Park. On the dressing table sat a diamond necklace Damir had bought me last week. I hadn’t touched it. Instead, my fingers went to the cheap jade pendant around my neck. Damir had bought it for three dollars at a Montana roadside stand two summers ago. That was when he used to look at me like I was his whole world.

Today was our wedding day.

My phone buzzed on the vanity. I picked it up, expecting Damir’s deep, warm voice.

“Is this Evelynn Brooks?” a rushed woman asked.

“Yes. Who is this?”

“This is Queens Memorial. Your mother, Linda Brooks, was struck by a car twenty minutes ago. She’s in critical condition.”

The room spun. The phone slipped in my hand.

I didn’t fix my hair. I didn’t change out of my robe. I grabbed a trench coat, threw it over my shoulders, and ran for the elevator.

The hospital smelled like bleach and copper. I ran to the reception desk, my chest heaving, tears blurring my vision.

“Linda Brooks,” I gasped. “Where is my mother?”

“She is in surgery,” a calm, familiar voice said behind me.

I turned around.

Victoria Grant stood by the row of plastic chairs. Damir’s mother looked flawless in a gray wool suit, not a single strand of silver hair out of place. She didn’t look worried. She looked like she was inspecting a bad investment.

“Victoria?” I breathed. “How did you know? Is Mom okay?”

Victoria didn’t answer. She sat down smoothly and opened her leather handbag. She pulled out a folded slip of paper and slid it across the seat between us.

“A girl from Queens was never going to survive in our world, Evelynn,” she said. Her voice was quiet, almost gentle, but her eyes were ice. “Take this and go.”

I looked down. It was a wire transfer receipt.

Five million dollars. Wired directly into my personal savings account, timestamped fifteen minutes ago.

My blood ran cold. “What is this? I don’t want your money! I love Damir!”

“It doesn’t matter what you want,” Victoria said, smoothing her skirt. “The money is already in your account. Damir’s financial team flags every transaction tied to you. He will see it within the hour.”

“You set this up,” I whispered, horror rising in my throat. “My mom—did you do something to my mom?”

Victoria stood up. She looked down at me like I was dirt on the clinic floor. “Your mother had an unfortunate accident. If you stay, accidents will keep happening. If you leave, she lives. Goodbye, Evelynn.”

She walked away. Her heels clicked evenly against the linoleum.

“Victoria! Wait!” I screamed.

She didn't turn back.

I grabbed my phone and dialed Damir. Straight to voicemail. Panic clawed at my ribs. I had to tell him before he saw the record. I had to explain.

I ran back out to the curb and hailed a yellow cab.

When I reached the penthouse, the doors to the private ceremony suite were wide open. The florist and caterers were gone. The grand room was empty, except for one man.

Damir stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass. He wore his custom black tuxedo, tall and broad-shouldered. The morning light carved sharp shadows across his face.

“Damir,” I cried, rushing toward him. “Damir, thank God. Listen to me, your mother—”

He turned around.

His eyes were totally black. No warmth. No Montana sun. Just dead, bottomless rage.

He raised his phone and held the screen inches from my face.

It was the bank alert. *Account credited: $5,000,000.00.*

He didn’t yell. He didn’t curse. He spoke in a flat, terrifying whisper.

“How much, Evelynn?”

“Damir, no! It wasn’t me!” I reached for his arm, but he jerked back as if my touch burned. “Your mother wired it! She cornered me at the hospital! My mom was hit by a car, and Victoria told me—”

“Stop lying,” he said. The words dropped like stones. “My mother has been at the country club all morning. And your mother had a minor scrape. You used her as an excuse to run to the bank.”

“Look at me!” I sobbed, clutching my robe. “I didn't take it! I don't care about the money!”

“Five million,” Damir said, a bitter smirk twisting his lips. “That was your price. You sold our wedding morning for five million dollars.”

“Damir, please—”

“Shut up,” he snapped. He stepped closer, towering over me, his shadow swallowing me whole. “You think you can just cash the check and walk away? You think you can make a fool of the Grant family?”

“I want a divorce,” I whispered, trembling. “If you think this of me, let me go.”

“Divorce?” Damir let out a dark, cruel laugh. “No. You wanted the Grant name, Evelynn. You wanted our wealth. Now you’re going to choke on it.”

By two o’clock that afternoon, a gray-haired lawyer arrived at the penthouse.

Damir didn’t look at me once while papers were signed. My personal bank cards were cut in half on the marble counter. My cell phone service was moved under the Grant corporate umbrella, every message and call logged.

Then Damir tossed a tablet onto the coffee table.

A draft of the society wedding announcement glowed on the screen. My name had been completely scrubbed out. Damir Grant was declared married, but the bride was unnamed, an invisible shadow.

“You don’t leave this penthouse without permission,” Damir said, buttoning his suit jacket. “You are my wife in name only. A prisoner of your own greed.”

“Damir, you can’t do this—”

He stopped at the foyer door. He didn't look back.

“Try to call a lawyer,” he said coldly. “Try to talk to the press. And your mother’s private care bills will be canceled by tonight. Every single cent will come due immediately.”

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut.

I stood alone in the center of the giant, silent room. The cheap jade pendant hung heavy and freezing against my chest.
