Chapter 2

I woke to the smell of herbs and clean linen and something faintly metallic that I recognized, after a moment, as my own burned skin.

Three days, someone told me later. I'd been unconscious for three days.

The room was nothing like anything in Nightshade. Pale walls, high windows, morning light coming through without apology. No pack-house smell. No wolf-musk layered over years of hierarchy and fear. Just clean air and the distant sound of someone moving quietly in a corridor.

Cassius Lyall was seated across the room at a small desk, reading through a stack of documents. He didn't look up when I stirred. He waited until I pushed myself upright—until I'd had a full breath and a chance to orient myself—before he set the papers down.

"Where am I," I said. Not a question. A demand.

"My territory." He turned his chair to face me. Dark hair, calm eyes, the particular stillness of someone who had never needed to perform authority because they simply had it. "You're safe."

"You said that before." I remembered his voice in the dark. The words I'd heard before I could open my eyes. "Why did you bring me here?"

He looked at me for a moment. Not measuring. Something more careful than that.

"Because your blood told me you belong to a line I am obligated to acknowledge."

I stared at him. He didn't elaborate. He didn't soften it or expand on it or give me anything else to hold onto. He just let the words sit there, solid and strange, while I tried to find the trap in them.

There had always been a trap. That was the first thing you learned as an Omega. Kindness had a price tag. Shelter had conditions. You paid eventually, one way or another, and the longer you waited to find out how, the worse it was.

I said nothing.

He didn't push. He stood, set a glass of water and a folded medical brief on the table beside my bed, and walked out. The door closed quietly behind him.

I sat there for a long time, looking at the water.

Then I drank it.

---

Four days later, my body made the decision for me.

I woke at three in the morning to pain that had nothing to do with silver burns, and by the time I understood what was happening, Petra Vane was already there—the head healer, a woman with grey-streaked hair and hands that moved with the certainty of someone who had done this a thousand times. She didn't ask me unnecessary questions. She didn't tell me to calm down. She just worked, steady and precise, and talked me through it in the same tone she might use to explain a procedure to a colleague.

Milo arrived just before dawn.

He was small and furious and absolutely real.

Petra placed him in my arms, and I felt something in my chest—the hollow place where the bond had been, that cold empty space I'd been carrying for days—shift. Not fill. It didn't fill. But something warm moved through it, like the first light through a cracked wall.

I heard Petra go still. Just for a second. A small pause in her movements, the way a person stops when they catch a scent they weren't expecting.

She didn't say anything. She finished her work and checked my burns and noted something in her chart, and her face gave nothing away.

I looked down at my son.

"The Moon Goddess had a different plan," I told him. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "The family we have—this is the plan she actually intended."

He blinked at me with dark, unfocused eyes.

I believed it. I had to believe it. I held onto it like the only solid thing in the room.

---

A week after Milo was born, Cassius came back.

He sat in the same chair. Same posture. He waited until Milo was asleep in the bassinet beside me before he spoke.

"There's something I've been holding," he said. "You're stable enough now. I think you should hear it."

I looked at him.

"You carry Lycan-royal blood." He said it plainly. No theater. "You are not a wolfless Omega. You are a late-blooming Lycan. Your wolf was suppressed—by your environment, by a pack that had no knowledge and no interest in looking deeper. She didn't fail to appear. She was waiting for a trigger powerful enough to wake her." He paused. "The extraction chamber was that trigger."

The silver room. The shackles. The needle. The ancient thing pressing against my ribs like a second heart.

I absorbed it in silence.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

"Since I picked you up."

I nodded once.

I didn't speak again for the rest of the day.

That night, after Milo fell asleep, I sat in the dark and let myself be completely devastated. I let the grief come—for the girl who had spent her whole life being told she was nothing, who had believed it just enough to stay. I let it come, and I let it move through me, and I did not stop it.

By morning, it was done.

I opened my eyes. Looked at the ceiling. Looked at my son.

And I began to plan.
