Chapter 3

Lucas didn't change his routine.

I noticed because I'd been watching. Not obviously. Not in a way anyone could call me out on. But when you spend two years cataloging pack behavior in a field notebook, you develop an eye for patterns.

He positioned himself at the edges of spaces. Training ground perimeter. Pack house side entrance. The corner table in the common room where the lighting was bad and most wolves didn't bother sitting. Always near an exit. Always with sightlines to every door.

And he was consistently present in spaces I occupied.

Not following me. That would've been obvious. But when I hauled compost bins at dawn, he was checking the perimeter fence fifty yards away. When I scrubbed the kitchen floor drains at noon, his motorcycle was parked in the back lot where he could see the service entrance. When I walked Barnaby through the outer territory at dusk, his dark silhouette was visible near the tree line.

The wolves who might've made my mornings worse found reasons to be elsewhere when his scarred face was in view.

Garrett and Finn hadn't approached me since the corridor incident. The Delta boys who used to knock my tray at mealtimes now sat three tables away. Even Juliana's casual cruelties—the pointed reassignments, the deliberate silences—happened only when Lucas wasn't physically present.

I didn't know what to do with that information. Didn't know if I was supposed to acknowledge it or pretend I hadn't noticed.

So I did what I always did. I observed. I wrote it down. And one evening, after kitchen cleanup, I set a portion of food at the edge of his usual post near the training ground fence.

Roast chicken. Decent cut. Still warm. I left it on a clean plate and walked away without looking back.

He didn't acknowledge it. Didn't call out. When I glanced over my shoulder from fifty yards away, he was still standing in the same position, hands in his jacket pockets, eyes on the horizon.

The next morning, the empty bowl was on the kitchen doorstep. Clean. No note. No comment.

I picked it up. Felt the weight of it. Carried it inside.

Wrote it in my notebook later. Not the what—the why was more important. Why he kept showing up. Why he never asked for anything. Why the empty bowl came back clean instead of abandoned.

I didn't have answers yet. But I was building the list.

---

My father broke the rules on a Thursday afternoon.

We had a routine. Lunch breaks twice a week on the cottage porch, where he lived in the outer territory. I'd bring whatever I could carry from the kitchen—usually bread, sometimes fruit if Carla wasn't watching. He'd make tea in a dented kettle. Barnaby would sprawl across our feet and snore. We didn't talk much. Didn't need to.

That day felt different from the start.

He set down his sandwich halfway through and looked at me. Really looked. Not the distant, careful way he usually did. This was direct. Steady. The kind of eye contact that made you sit up straighter without meaning to.

Barnaby's tail thumped once against the porch boards. Then went still.

"Your wolf is not dead," my father said.

I froze. Sandwich forgotten in my hand.

"She is sleeping." His voice was quiet. Measured. Every word deliberate. "When she wakes, you will understand why I kept you hidden."

The air between us went very still.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions. Wanted to demand explanations. Wanted to know what *hidden* meant, what *sleeping* meant, why he was telling me this now after eighteen years of silence.

But his face closed like a door. The openness vanished. He picked up his sandwich and took another bite, gaze shifting to the horizon.

I knew that look. I'd seen it a hundred times. It meant the conversation was over.

I finished my lunch in silence. Barnaby's warmth pressed against my ankle. The autumn wind rustled through the trees beyond the cottage.

When I stood to leave, my father's hand touched my wrist. Brief. Gentle.

"Be careful," he said.

Then he let go.

I walked back to the pack house with the sentence burning in my chest alongside the phantom ache of the severed bond. *Sleeping, not gone. Sleeping.*

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Counted my breaths. Held onto it like a lifeline.

---

It happened on the outer territory path, halfway between my father's cottage and the pack house.

No one was nearby. The path was empty. Late afternoon light slanted through the trees, gold and fading.

I felt it before I understood what it was.

A warmth. Deep inside my chest. Not the hollow ache where the bond had broken. This was different. Lower. Older. Like something shifting in deep sleep.

It pulsed once. Twice. Three times.

Then vanished.

I stopped walking. Hand pressed to my sternum. Heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat.

The warmth was gone. The path was silent. Barnaby sniffed at a tree root, oblivious.

I stood there for a long moment. Waiting. Listening.

Nothing.

But I knew what I'd felt. Knew it wasn't my imagination. Knew it was real in the same way I knew the bond breaking had been real—a physical sensation, undeniable, rooted in something deeper than thought.

*Sleeping, not gone.*

I didn't write this in my field notebook. Didn't tell my father. Didn't mention it to Lucas or Carla or anyone.

This I held entirely alone.

I walked the rest of the way back to the pack house with my hand still pressed to my chest, feeling for the warmth that was no longer there.

Somewhere inside me, something ancient had stirred.

And somewhere in the pack house above me, Easton was waking from another restless night, touching the back of his neck, and telling himself the phantom honeysuckle scent would fade.

It wouldn't.

But neither of us knew that yet.
