Chapter 4

The bonfire gathering was mandatory. Pack unity, Juliana called it. I called it another stage for her performances.

I stood at the edge of the clearing with Barnaby pressed against my leg, his warmth steadying. The fire crackled at the center, throwing orange light across fifty wolves arranged in loose clusters. Deltas near the front. Gammas along the sides. Omegas like me at the back, where the light barely reached.

Juliana held court near the flames in a white sweater that looked expensive. Easton stood beside her, drink in hand, relaxed. They looked good together. Matched. Like they'd been practicing.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist beneath my sleeve. Counted my breaths. Told myself I could leave in twenty minutes without it being obvious.

Then Juliana's voice cut through the clearing.

"Samantha."

Every head turned.

I went very still. Barnaby's tail stopped wagging.

Juliana smiled. Warm. Inviting. The kind of smile that meant nothing good. "Come here. I want to ask you something."

I didn't move.

"Please," she added. Still smiling. "It's important."

Fifty wolves watched. Waiting. I could feel their attention like weight on my skin.

I walked forward. Kept my steps even. Kept my face blank. Barnaby tried to follow, but I signaled him to stay. He sat, ears back, unhappy.

The firelight hit me full-on when I stopped ten feet from Juliana. Heat prickled across my face. Smoke stung my eyes.

"There's been talk," Juliana said. Her voice carried. Deliberate. Pitched for the whole clearing. "About whether you actually have a wolf. Some people think you're just... broken."

Silence. Complete. Even the fire seemed quieter.

I looked at her. Said nothing.

"So I thought we could settle it." She tilted her head. Still smiling. "Shift. Right now. Prove you even have a wolf. Do it in front of everyone."

My chest tightened. The phantom ache where the bond had broken flared hot and cold at once.

I knew what this was. Knew exactly what she was doing. Maximum audience. Maximum humiliation. She'd chosen the bonfire the same way she'd chosen the Come of Age Ceremony—a stage where everyone would see and no one could look away.

I pressed my thumb harder against my wrist. Felt my pulse hammer beneath my skin.

I could try. Could close my eyes and reach for the warmth I'd felt on the outer territory path. Could search for the sleeping thing my father said was there.

But I knew what would happen. I'd stand here. Eyes closed. Straining. And nothing would come. And fifty wolves would watch me fail.

So I didn't try.

I stood in the firelight with my hands at my sides and my face composed and absorbed it. The stares. The whispers starting at the edges of the clearing. Juliana's thin smile sharpening.

Easton, across the fire, took a sip of his drink. Looked at the flames. Said nothing.

"Well?" Juliana's voice went softer. More dangerous. "We're waiting."

I opened my mouth. Didn't know what I was going to say. Didn't get the chance.

Lucas stepped between us.

I didn't hear him approach. Didn't see him move. He was just suddenly there, his broad frame blocking Juliana from my line of sight, leather jacket dark against the firelight.

The clearing went silent.

Lucas didn't speak. Didn't look at Juliana. He stood with his back to me, facing the crowd, and something rippled beneath his skin.

His wolf.

Not a full shift. Just a flicker. Enough that his eyes flashed gold and his shoulders broadened and the massive dark shape of his wolf pressed outward against his human form like a shadow trying to break free.

A growl built in his chest. Low. Resonant. The kind of sound that makes your hindbrain sit down and shut up.

Every Delta in the front row stumbled backward. Two of them actually tripped. A Gamma near the side dropped his drink.

The aura rolling off Lucas was wrong. Too heavy. Too deep. Too authoritative for a rogue who belonged to no pack and answered to no Alpha. It filled the clearing like smoke, thick and undeniable, and I felt it press against my skin even standing behind him.

Juliana's smile faltered. Just for a second. Her eyes went wide.

Lucas's voice, when he spoke, was flat and final.

"She doesn't owe you a thing."

The silence stretched. Long. Uncomfortable.

Then Juliana laughed. Too bright. Too loud. She waved a hand dismissively. "Of course. I was just asking. No need to be dramatic, Lucas."

She turned away. Easton followed. The crowd began to shift, conversations restarting in low murmurs.

But I saw the way Juliana's gaze tracked back to Lucas. Saw the sharp calculation in her eyes as they flicked between him and me. Saw the exact moment she noticed something I hadn't consciously registered until now.

His scent. Dark cedar and smoke. Clinging to my jacket sleeve. Threaded through my hair.

She smiled again. Thinner this time. Then disappeared into the crowd.

Lucas turned to face me. His eyes were still faintly gold at the edges. His breathing was controlled but not quite even.

We stood there for a long moment. The fire crackled behind him. Shadows moved across his scarred face.

I wanted to say thank you. Wanted to ask what the hell that aura was and why every wolf in the clearing had felt it like a physical blow.

But the words stuck in my throat.

He nodded once. Then walked away, hands in his pockets, boots quiet on the grass.

I watched him go. Felt the warmth of his presence fade. Felt the cold rush back in where he'd been standing.

Barnaby trotted over and pressed his nose against my palm. I scratched behind his ears. Focused on the familiar texture of his fur. Focused on breathing.

Across the clearing, Juliana stood with her back to the fire, phone pressed to her ear. Her lips moved rapidly. She glanced once in my direction, then away.

I pulled out my field notebook later, back in my room, and wrote it all down. The bonfire. The command. Lucas's partial shift and the aura that shouldn't exist.

Then I turned to the page with his name at the top and added one more line:

*Why does his wolf feel like that?*

I didn't have an answer. But I was starting to suspect that whatever Lucas Vane was, "rogue drifter" didn't come close to covering it.

And I was starting to suspect that Juliana had just figured out the same thing.
