Chapter 2

The kitchen smelled like old grease and soap that didn't quite cut through the grime.

I stood at the industrial sink with my hands submerged in water hot enough to hurt. The head Omega—a woman named Carla who'd been doing this for twenty years—had pointed me to a stack of pots crusted with yesterday's stew and said, "Start there."

I started there.

The scrub brush was worn down to nubs. The steel wool shredded my palms within the first ten minutes, but I kept going. Scrub. Rinse. Stack. Repeat. My hands went red, then raw, then numb. I focused on the rhythm. It was easier than thinking about the fact that three days ago I'd been training with the Deltas, and now I was elbow-deep in other people's dirty dishes.

Carla didn't speak to me except to assign the next task. Haul water from the storage room. Scrub the floor drains. Empty the compost bins behind the building. Every job was the kind that left you smelling like work no one wanted to acknowledge.

I didn't complain. Complaining in Silverfang was an invitation.

Around noon, I carried a tray of clean mugs through the back corridor toward the main storage. The hallway was narrow, dim, and usually empty during meal prep. I heard them before I saw them.

Two Delta boys. I recognized their voices—Garrett and someone else, maybe Finn. They'd knocked my tray from my hands at least a dozen times over the past two years. Always in corridors like this one. Always when no one was watching.

I kept walking. Kept my grip steady on the tray.

Garrett stepped out from the side corridor first. Finn followed. Both bigger than me. Both wearing the lazy, entitled expressions of wolves who knew exactly how much they could get away with.

"Samantha." Garrett's smile was wide. "Heard you got a promotion. Omega kitchen duty. Suits you."

I stopped. Looked at him. Said nothing.

"What, no thank you?" Finn moved to my left, boxing me in. "We're just being friendly."

Garrett reached for the tray.

Then Lucas was there.

I didn't hear him approach. Didn't smell him coming. He just materialized from a doorway shadow ten feet behind Garrett like he'd been standing there the whole time.

He didn't say a word. Didn't shift. Didn't even move forward.

He just stood there.

Garrett's hand froze mid-reach. Finn went very still.

Lucas's presence filled the corridor. Even suppressed—even whatever he was doing to himself to stay under the radar—it was enough. The air went heavy. The kind of heavy that makes your wolf sit down inside you and shut up.

Garrett's smile disappeared. He dropped his hand. Took a step back.

"We were just—" Finn started.

Lucas didn't blink. Didn't speak. Just looked at them.

They left. Fast. I heard their footsteps echo down the corridor and fade.

I turned to face Lucas. He was still standing in the doorway shadow, leather jacket zipped, hands in his pockets. Scars visible along his jaw. Dark eyes steady on mine.

We held eye contact for a long moment. I wanted to say thank you. Wanted to ask why he kept doing this—why he kept showing up in corridors and training yards and back hallways when no one else did.

But the words didn't come.

He nodded once. Then turned and walked away, his boots quiet on the stone floor.

I stood there holding the tray of mugs, my raw hands aching, and watched him disappear around the corner.

Then I pulled out my field notebook. Wrote the date. Wrote what happened.

I flipped to a new page. Wrote his name at the top.

Lucas Vane.

This page wasn't a list of witnesses. It was something else. I didn't know what yet.

I closed the notebook. Slid it back into my pocket. Delivered the mugs.

---

That evening, Juliana staged her demonstration.

The pack house common room was full. Deltas, Gammas, off-duty warriors, kitchen staff. Someone had set up chairs in rows facing the front, like a town hall meeting. Juliana stood at the center in a cream-colored dress and the Luna-candidate sash draped across her shoulder. Easton stood beside her, hands clasped behind his back, wearing the agreeable expression I'd seen a thousand times.

I was carrying a water jug from the kitchen to the back storage when I walked through. Carla had told me to take the long route to avoid the crowd, but the short route was faster and my hands hurt too much to care.

Juliana's voice carried across the room, warm and measured. "—restructuring to improve pack efficiency and ensure everyone is contributing where they're best suited."

I kept my head down. Focused on the jug. Focused on not spilling.

"Marcus Hale, you're reassigned from Gamma rotation to perimeter patrol." Juliana's smile was thin. "I just think it's better for everyone if you know your place."

Marcus—a Gamma I'd trained with once—stood near the front row. His jaw tightened, but he nodded.

"Leah Crane, you're moved from healer assistant to kitchen prep."

Leah's face went pale. She didn't argue.

"Owen Briggs, perimeter patrol to grounds maintenance."

I was halfway across the room when Juliana paused mid-speech. The silence stretched. Deliberate.

I felt every eye in the room turn toward me.

I kept walking. Water jug steady. Footsteps even.

Juliana let the silence linger. Long enough for everyone to see the wolfless Omega with the cracked mark on her neck, carrying water like the servant she'd always been.

Then she smiled and continued. "As I was saying, efficiency benefits everyone."

Easton nodded along. Agreeable. Supportive. Like this had nothing to do with him.

I reached the back corridor. Set the jug down. Pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted my breaths.

Wrote it all in my notebook later. Every demotion. Every name. The exact length of the silence Juliana used.

And one more line at the bottom:

*Easton didn't look at me once.*

---

I didn't know that Easton wasn't sleeping.

I didn't know that at three in the morning, lying alone in his quarters, a phantom thread of wild honeysuckle and thunderstorm ozone ghosted through his senses—stronger than it should be for a severed bond.

I didn't know he sat up, touched the back of his neck, and told himself it would fade.

I didn't know he spent the rest of the night reviewing pack alliance ledgers, trying to bury the scent under numbers and strategy.

And I didn't know that the next day, when he passed me in the corridor and caught the faintest trace of dark cedar threaded through my scent—Lucas's scent—something in his wolf flinched.

I only knew what I could see. What I could write down. What I could prove.

And what I saw was a man who had chosen his path and walked it without looking back.

So I did the same.
