Chapter 2

Three weeks.

That's how long I let Reed believe he was winning.

We met at cafes in Capitol Hill, quiet corners where he could lean across small tables and whisper things he thought were meaningful. He told me about TechSource's new server contracts, about the offshore accounts he'd restructured last quarter, about the silent partners who'd rather die than see their names in print. He thought he was impressing me. He thought every piece of information was a gift, a brick in the bridge he was building back to me.

I listened. I smiled at the right moments. I let my fingers brush his hand once, just once, and watched his whole face change.

I also made sure to leave his texts open on my screen at the lounge. Tilted just enough. Just long enough.

Kayla Munoz had friends everywhere in this city. That was the thing about women like her—they built surveillance networks and called it a social life.

I gave it eleven days.

She came in on a Tuesday.

I heard her before I saw her. The clinking of that diamond ring against a champagne flute, loud and deliberate, the way a bell rings before an execution. The lounge went quiet in that particular way it does when someone with money and fury walks through a door.

"Where is she?"

I was already positioned at the service bar, tray in hand, back to the entrance. I counted to three. Then I turned.

Kayla looked expensive and unraveling. Her Chanel blazer was buttoned wrong. Her eyes were red at the corners, which she'd tried to hide under concealer that was one shade too light.

"You." She crossed the floor fast, heels cracking against the marble. "You pathetic little gold-digger. Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"

Around us, heads turned. Good.

"Ms. Munoz—" I started, soft, confused.

"Don't." She got close enough that I could smell her perfume. Gardenia and rage. "He told me everything. The cafes, the calls. You've been throwing yourself at my fiancé for weeks."

"I don't know what you mean," I said quietly. My voice was steady. My eyes, I made sure, were glassy.

"You know exactly what I mean." Her voice cracked up an octave. "You're nothing. You're a bankrupt nobody in a borrowed uniform, and you thought you could take what's mine?"

She grabbed a glass off my tray. For one second I thought she'd throw it. Instead she just held it, knuckles white, and leaned in close.

"Stay away from Reed," she hissed. "Or I will make what happened to your family look like a minor inconvenience."

My family.

Something moved through me, fast and cold. I let it show on my face—just a flicker, just enough to look like a wound.

Then my eyes filled.

I didn't sob. I didn't make a sound. I just let two tears track slowly down my face, and I stood there and took it, and I made sure I was facing the entrance when I did.

Reed walked in at 8:47.

I know because I'd texted him at 8:30. *I think I need to see you tonight.* Simple. He'd come fast.

He stopped in the doorway. Took in Kayla's hand around the glass, my wet cheeks, the circle of watching faces.

"Kayla." His voice was flat.

She spun around. Whatever she saw in his expression made her take a step back.

"Reed, she's been—"

"Stop." He crossed the room. He didn't look at me. He looked at her, and the look on his face was the kind that ends things. "This is done."

"What?"

"Us." He reached out and took the glass from her hand, set it down on the nearest table. "We're done, Kayla. I'll have my lawyer call yours."

The room was absolutely silent.

Kayla's face went through about six different colors. Then she pulled the ring off her finger and dropped it on the floor, and the sound it made on the marble was very small and very final.

She walked out without another word.

Reed turned to me. His jaw was tight. His eyes were doing that thing where he thought he was being noble.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"Reed, you didn't have to—"

"I know what I did." He picked up the ring from the floor and closed his fist around it. "It's fine."

It was not fine.

I found out two days later, through a contact at the financial desk of the Seattle Tribune, that Kayla's family had pulled their investment from TechSource within forty-eight hours of the broken engagement. Eleven million dollars, gone. The kind of funding gap that didn't close quietly.

I was at the lounge when I heard. I set down my tray. I walked to the staff bathroom and stood in front of the mirror for a moment.

My reflection looked back at me. Calm. Composed.

I let out a slow breath.

Then I straightened my collar, picked up my tray, and went back to work.
