Chapter 3

The call came at 6:14 p.m.

I was standing at the kitchen window when the hospital number lit up the screen. I already knew. I think I'd known since the third evening of processing delays, when my mother's voice on the phone had gone so thin I had to press the receiver hard against my ear just to hear her breathing.

She passed at 2:47 that afternoon. Alone. The surgery had never been scheduled.

I sat down on the kitchen floor. Not because my legs gave out. I just didn't see any reason to stand anymore. The linoleum was cold through my clothes. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, a car alarm went off and stopped.

I sat there a long time.

Connor came home at seven. I heard his key in the lock, heard him set his bag down in the hall, heard his footsteps cross toward the kitchen. He saw me on the floor. I watched his eyes move over me the way you look at something that doesn't quite make sense — a piece of furniture out of place, a stain you don't remember making.

He stepped over my legs to reach the refrigerator.

Opened it. Stood there in the cold light, scanning the shelves.

"What do you want for dinner?"

I looked up at him. His back was to me. His hand moved a container aside to check what was behind it.

Something happened in my chest right then. Not breaking. Something much quieter than that. Like a door swinging shut on a room I would never go back into.

He couldn't touch this. Whatever I was feeling — the cold floor, the 6:14 call, the image I couldn't stop seeing of a hospital room with a photograph on the nightstand and no one in the chair beside the bed — he could not have any of it. I would not let him stand over my grief the way he'd stood over everything else.

I pressed two fingers to my throat.

Then I put my hand down.

"Whatever's easy," I said. My voice came out even.

He made pasta. I ate it. We sat across from each other and he talked about a problem at the office and I nodded at the right moments and when the dishes were done I went to bed.

I did not cry until he was asleep. And even then, I did it quietly, face turned into the pillow, no sound at all.

In the weeks that followed, I became very still.

I arranged a brief obituary. The kind that lists a name and dates and a daughter who survives her. I organized a modest service — twelve people, a room at the funeral home, flowers I chose myself because my mother had liked yellow. I stood at the front and thanked people for coming and did not fall apart once.

Connor stood beside me at the service with his hand at the small of my back. The gesture of a devoted husband. I let him keep it.

At home I moved through the days like someone who had accepted her situation. I cooked. I kept the apartment clean. When he asked how I was, I said I was managing. When he watched me, I gave him nothing interesting to see.

I understood what he was waiting for. He wanted the collapse. The final surrender that would confirm what he'd been building toward for years — a Vera who had tried everything and failed and now knew, in her bones, that the limits of her world were the limits he'd drawn.

I didn't give it to him.

Instead, I watched.

I watched the way he relaxed when I stopped asking questions. The way his shoulders dropped when I stopped pushing at the edges of what I was allowed. He started leaving his phone on the counter instead of his pocket. He stopped checking the router. One morning he set my phone on the kitchen table without comment, like it had simply turned up there, and by the following week my station hours were reinstated part-time.

He thought he'd won.

I let him think it.

I went back to the station and sat in my booth and put on my headphones and did my hours and smiled at Maisie in the hallway, and every day I came home and made dinner and went to bed and said nothing that mattered.

But I was counting things now. Exits. Schedules. Which hours the booth at the end of the hall sat empty. Who had access to what systems and when.

My mother had a photograph on her nightstand. Me in a burgundy blouse, laughing, my first day at the station. She kept it there so I was the last thing she saw before she slept.

He took that from her. He took her last weeks and her surgery and whatever time she might have had, and he did it with paperwork and patience and a pen he'd set on the table himself.

I pressed two fingers to my throat in the dark and felt my pulse there, steady.

I was not finished.

I was just getting quiet enough to begin.
