Chapter 4

I went back to the station like nothing had happened. That was the point.

I smiled at the receptionist. I refilled my coffee from the break room pot. I sat in my booth and put on my headphones and did my hours, and when I took them off I walked the hallways the way I always had — unhurried, unremarkable, a woman who had accepted her situation.

But I was looking at everything differently now.

The communal printer near the admin wing jammed twice a week, minimum. Everyone knew it. Everyone ignored the backup tray where uncollected pages stacked up until someone swept them into recycling on Friday afternoons. I started walking past it every morning. Slowly. The way you walk past something you're not interested in.

The third morning, I found two pages with Connor's signature block at the bottom. Fellowship routing forms, dated fourteen months apart. I photographed them with the station's equipment checkout camera — the one anyone could borrow for field assignments — and logged it under a routine audio project. Then I filed the originals back in the tray, facedown, exactly as I'd found them.

I started keeping a list in my head. Dates. Signatures. The specific language Connor used on official documents versus the language he used when he talked to me. They were different. The documents were careful. Precise. The language of a man who knew exactly what he was authorizing and wanted it to look like something else.

Dale Marsh was easier to read than he thought he was.

He was the kind of nervous that comes from having done something he can't undo. Every time Dani stopped by his office — and she stopped by often, always with something small and plausible, a form to sign, a scheduling question — his shoulders did a specific thing. They lifted slightly, then dropped. Like a man bracing for impact, then remembering he was supposed to look relaxed.

I watched that happen four times in one week.

The fifth time, I was close enough to hear. Dani's voice was warm and unhurried. Dale's responses were short. Yes. Of course. I'll have it by Thursday. He didn't look at her directly. He looked at the papers on his desk, the pen in his hand, the middle distance — anywhere that wasn't her face.

That was the deference of a man who had been paid. I knew it the moment I named it.

I wrote the date down in the margin of a script I was editing. Then I erased it and memorized it instead.

The emergency broadcast facility was at the end of the east corridor, past the archive room and the equipment storage bay. It was used maybe twice a year — severe weather alerts, county emergencies. The rest of the time it sat locked and quiet behind a door with a keypad and a physical deadbolt.

I signed up for the technical training session the station offered every quarter. Routine recertification. Three other people were on the list; only one showed up besides me, a new hire who spent the whole session asking questions about the weather alert protocol. The technician running it was bored and thorough in the way of someone who has given the same tour forty times.

When he stepped out to take a call, I pressed the key against the wax block I'd tucked in my jacket pocket.

It took four seconds. I smoothed the surface flat and put it away before he came back through the door.

I had a copy cut three days later at the hardware place two towns over, paying cash, wearing a hat I didn't own anymore by the time I got home.

---

Dani had been watching me.

I knew because I'd been watching her watch me.

She was good at it — the casual glance, the friendly nod in the hallway, the way she angled her body at station gatherings so she could see me in her peripheral vision without appearing to look. She was taking inventory the same way I was. The difference was she thought she was the only one doing it.

I noticed when her schedule shifted. She volunteered to supervise the equipment storage room reorganization — a job nobody wanted, a job that required two evenings of sorting through cable bins and outdated hardware. She put herself on the schedule for the same window as my late shift.

The next morning I saw her stop by Maisie's desk. Warm. Friendly. A favor asked, easily granted. Something about archive retrieval on the east corridor. Maisie nodded and wrote it down.

I watched Maisie write it down.

I pressed two fingers to my throat, light and brief, and kept walking.

I didn't know exactly what Dani was planning. But I understood the shape of it. She was clearing the room. Positioning the pieces. She had decided that quiet wasn't enough anymore — that I needed to be removed from the board entirely.

I thought about the key in my desk drawer at home.

I thought about the dates I'd memorized.

I thought about my mother's voice going thin on the phone, a little thinner each evening, until there was nothing left to hear.

I kept my face still and my pace even and I went back to my booth and put on my headphones.

I had a little more time. Not much.

Enough.
