Chapter 3

On Saturday morning, I met Serena for coffee at a small corner cafe in Brooklyn Heights.

The air was crisp and smelled like roasted beans and damp leaves. Serena sat across from me at a low wooden table. She had ordered two oat milk lattes. When I sat down, she didn't drink hers. She just looked at me. Her dark eyes were wide and worried, like she expected me to burst into tears at any second.

"You don't have to put on a brave face with me, Lex," she said softly.

I smiled and took a sip of my coffee. "I'm not putting on a face, Serena. I'm fine. Really."

She leaned in closer over the table. "You know Mark from our alumni circle?"

"Yeah."

"He saw Jalen on Thursday night," Serena said, dropping her voice. "At Trattoria Stella. In the West Village."

A small chill hit the back of my neck, then vanished. Stella was our place. Jalen and I had eaten there every anniversary. We always sat at the small booth in the back corner by the brick wall.

"Was Braelynn with him?" I asked.

Serena shook her head. "No. Mark said he was completely alone. He sat at that exact booth for two hours, nursing a single glass of bourbon. Mark said he just stared at the empty seat across from him. He looked miserable."

I looked down at the foam in my cup.

"That's not all," Serena added. "Someone else saw him last weekend at the bookstore in Park Slope. You know, the old one with the creaky floors where you used to lose track of time."

I remembered that shop well. Whenever I dragged Jalen there, he would wait in the car. He would honk the horn if I took more than twenty minutes. He used to say old books smelled like dust and failure.

Now, he was wandering those narrow aisles alone.

He was looking for ghost prints. He was trying to catch the scent of a woman he had thrown away.

I knew how Jalen’s mind worked. He had traded me for a girl who worshipped him. But Braelynn’s worship came with a heavy price tag. She needed constant reassurance. She needed him to tell her she was pretty every twenty minutes. She staged every dinner, every walk, every touch for her phone screen.

When Jalen looked at Braelynn, he saw a mirror reflecting his ego. But mirrors don't offer warmth.

He was drowning in her noise, and suddenly, he missed my silence. He missed the way I used to sit across from him, reading a book, perfectly content without demanding a performance.

"Let him wander," I said quietly.

Serena studied my face. "You really don't care, do you?"

"I cared for five years, Serena. That was enough."

I pulled out my phone and showed her the sketches I had worked on that morning. I told her about the new brownstone project in Cobble Hill. I told her about the light in my new apartment, and how my fern was finally growing a new frond.

As I talked, Serena’s shoulders slowly dropped. The tight line of her mouth softened into a broad, genuine smile. Her eyes grew a little shiny.

"What?" I asked, touching my cheek. "Is there coffee on my face?"

"No," she said, shaking her head. "I was just so scared I’d come here today and find you in pieces. I thought you'd be smaller. But you’re not. You look... like Lexi again. The Lexi from before Jalen."

Hearing that sent a quiet warmth through my chest.

Later that afternoon, I walked back to my apartment.

The sun was sinking toward the river, throwing long golden bars across my oak floor. I took off my shoes and walked to the kitchen to fill a glass with water.

Just as the tap shut off, my phone rang.

The screen read: *Mom.*

I took a breath and picked it up. "Hi, Mom."

"You’re in Brooklyn," my mother, Diana, said. No hello. No warm-up. That was just who she was.

"I am," I replied.

"Good," she said, her voice crisp and sharp. "The Upper East Side was always too stiff for you. You looked like a mannequin living in that glass box. Jalen’s taste was always loud and cheap, even with his family’s money."

I leaned against the counter, smiling faintly. "You never liked him."

"I tolerated him because you thought he was gold," she retorted. "A woman in love is usually blind, deaf, and dumb for the first three years. Are you crying over him?"

"No, Mom. I’m not."

"Good. Don't waste the water. He isn't worth the salt."

There was a long silence on the line. I heard the faint clinking of dishes in her kitchen back in Connecticut. My mother was pragmatic to a fault, but she wasn't cruel.

When she spoke again, the sharp edge in her voice had melted away.

"Lexi," she said quietly. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Are you grieving Jalen?" Diana asked. "Or are you grieving the girl you forced yourself to become just to keep him happy?"

The question hit me like a splash of cold water.

My breath caught in my throat. I stood frozen in the middle of my sunny kitchen, staring at the floor.

I tucked a strand of hair behind my left ear with trembling fingers.

The girl who wore clothes she didn't like. The girl who kept the heavy curtains drawn. The girl who swallowed her doubts every time another woman’s perfume lingered on his jacket.

I stood there in the quiet apartment, unable to speak. The silence stretched between us, heavy and true.
