Chapter 4

Braelynn must have felt the floor slipping out from under her feet.

She had won the man. But winning Jalen Webb was like catching smoke. Once you closed your fist, there was nothing inside.

He was cold. He was distant. He stayed late at his office and drank alone in corner booths. Braelynn was desperate, and desperate people do reckless things.

She stopped taking her birth control. She didn't tell him, of course. She wanted a lock, and a baby was the heaviest chain she could find.

I found out later how the reveal went down. A mutual acquaintance from our NYU days was sitting three tables away at a French bistro in Midtown.

Braelynn had planned the whole show. She picked a romantic table by the candle sconces. She ordered a glass of water with lemon. When the entrees arrived, she didn't touch her food.

Instead, she slid a small white box across the white linen tablecloth.

Her hands trembled. Big, wet tears welled in her eyes, painted to look soft and fragile. She looked up at him, biting her lip, waiting for the movie moment. She wanted him to gasp. She wanted him to jump up, pull her out of her chair, and spin her around.

Jalen opened the box.

Inside was the positive test.

He didn't gasp. He didn't smile.

Every drop of color drained straight out of his face. His skin went the color of wet paper. He stared down into the box, his jaw clamped shut so hard the muscles jumped in his cheek.

"Jalen?" Braelynn whispered. She reached for his hand across the table.

Jalen pulled his hand back like she had burned him.

He didn't say congratulations. He didn't say, *I love you.*

Slowly, deliberately, Jalen set his linen napkin on his plate. He pushed his chair back. The legs scraped loud against the hardwood floor.

He stood up and walked away from the table.

He didn't leave the restaurant. He walked over to the tall glass window facing the rainy Midtown street. He shoved both hands deep into his suit pockets. His back was stiff and straight as a board.

He stood there for three full minutes.

Three whole minutes of dead, freezing silence.

Braelynn sat alone at the table, surrounded by warm bread and melting butter. People at neighboring tables began to glance over. Her rehearsed tears dried on her cheeks, turning stiff and cold.

She wanted a husband. She wanted a ring.

Instead, she was staring at the wide back of a man who looked like he had just been handed a death sentence. That silence told her everything she needed to know.

***

That night, the storm crossed the river into Brooklyn.

Rain tapped softly against the tall windows of my new apartment. I had a small lamp on. The light pooled golden across my drafting table. The room smelled like damp wood, fresh paper, and mint tea.

At 11:40 PM, my phone screen lit up on the desk.

It was an Instagram notification. A direct message from an account called *user9823411*. Zero followers. Zero following. No profile picture.

I picked up the phone and tapped the message.

It was a photograph.

A black-and-white sonogram printout lay on a white duvet. In the corner of the paper, the doctor's timestamp was from that very morning. A tiny gray smudge sat in the center of the dark circle.

Below the picture, there was a single line of text:

*He chose me. He chose us. Enjoy your empty apartment. 😘*

I looked at the words.

My heart didn't thump against my ribs. My hands didn't shake. I didn't feel a single flare of anger.

I only felt a heavy, quiet pity.

I knew why she had sent it. She was drowning. Jalen had looked at that baby and seen a trap, and Braelynn knew it. She had expected victory, but she was standing in a pile of cold ash.

A happy woman doesn't make burner accounts at midnight. A woman who is truly loved doesn't search for her man's ex-wife just to prove she exists.

She was screaming into the dark, begging me to hurt so she wouldn't have to feel so alone in her misery.

I wasn't going to give her that.

I held down the volume and power buttons. The screen flashed white with a quiet *click*.

Screenshot saved.

I moved the image into a private folder labeled *Records*. Cold, clean evidence. Just in case.

Then, I closed the app. I didn't reply. I didn't send a question mark. I didn't even block the burner account. To block someone is to admit they touched you. Indifference is so much colder.

I set the phone facedown on the corner of the wooden desk.

The rain picked up outside, drumming a steady rhythm against the glass.

I pulled my sketchbook toward me. I picked up my soft graphite pencil.

I didn't think about Jalen standing frozen by a restaurant window. I didn't think about Braelynn crying into her duvet. Their drama belonged to a life I had already buried.

I pressed the pencil to the clean white page.

I began to sketch a sunroom. High glass ceilings that let the morning light pour through. Thick brick walls covered in climbing green ivy. A wide wooden bench by the sill where someone could read for hours without ever looking at the clock.

A room full of warmth. Full of peace.

And not a single person inside who didn't deserve to be there.
