Chapter 5

Maxwell was in the shower when I saw it.

His iPad was on the kitchen counter. Face up. Screen still lit.

I wasn't looking for anything. I'd just come out to make coffee. But the notification was right there. Bold letters. Real estate transaction confirmed.

I picked up the iPad.

The document was open. A property transfer. Four-bedroom townhouse in East Hampton. Ocean views. Private beach access.

Purchase price: $3,000,000.

Funding source: Crawford-Carpenter Joint Brokerage Account.

Title holder: Fallon Daniels.

I read it three times. The words didn't change.

My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought they'd shake.

I took screenshots. Every page. Sent them to my personal email. Deleted the sent messages from his iPad. Put it back exactly where I'd found it.

Then I poured my coffee. Black. No sugar.

I sat at the kitchen table and waited.

Maxwell came out ten minutes later. Hair wet. Smelling like cedar and soap. He kissed the top of my head.

"Morning," he said.

"Morning."

He poured himself coffee. Grabbed his iPad off the counter. Didn't even glance at it. Just tucked it under his arm.

"I've got back-to-back meetings today," he said. "Probably won't be home until eight."

"Okay," I said.

He looked at me. "You alright? You seem quiet."

"I'm fine," I said. "Just tired."

He nodded. Kissed me again. Then he was gone.

I sat at the table for a long time after that. The coffee went cold. The sun moved across the floor.

Three million dollars.

A house in the Hamptons.

In her name.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my right hand. The place where my ring finger used to be.

Then I got up and went to the bedroom.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I didn't throw things.

I opened my laptop and started making a list.

The next morning, I called the lab. A private testing facility on the Upper West Side. The kind that didn't ask questions.

"I need independent analysis of a pharmaceutical compound," I said. "Suspected tampering."

The woman on the phone was professional. Efficient. "Bring the samples in. We'll have results in forty-eight hours."

I brought the vitamin bottles in a sealed plastic bag. The woman at the desk logged them without comment. Gave me a receipt.

"We'll call you," she said.

I went home. Maxwell was at work. The penthouse was quiet.

I went through our filing cabinet. Found the joint account statements. Photographed every page. Found the property deed Maxwell kept in his desk drawer. Photographed that too.

I opened a new folder on my laptop. Labeled it "Medical Records." Started uploading everything.

The diagnosis from Mount Sinai. The lab results from the private facility when they came through. The financial documents. The property transfer.

Every piece of evidence in chronological order.

Maxwell came home that night with Thai food. Pad see ew and spring rolls. My favorites.

"Thought you might be hungry," he said.

We ate at the kitchen table. He talked about his day. A difficult client. A contract negotiation. I nodded in the right places. Asked follow-up questions.

He smiled at me. Reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"I'm glad you're feeling better," he said. "You seemed off yesterday."

"I'm fine," I said.

After dinner, he went to his office to finish emails. I cleaned up. Loaded the dishwasher. Wiped down the counters.

Then I went back to my laptop and kept working.

Diana called on Wednesday. I was in the middle of organizing bank statements.

"How are you?" she asked.

"I'm leaving him," I said.

Silence on the other end. Then: "When?"

"Soon. I'm building the case first."

"Do you need help?"

"I need a lawyer," I said. "A good one."

"I'll send you a name," she said. "She's brutal. You'll like her."

The email came through an hour later. Naomi Reeves. Upper East Side. Specializes in high-net-worth divorce.

I called the next morning. The receptionist put me through immediately.

"Ms. Carpenter," Naomi said. Her voice was cool. Precise. "Diana Walsh speaks very highly of you. When can you come in?"

"Tomorrow," I said.

"Two o'clock. Bring everything."

I hung up. My hands were still steady.

Naomi's office was on the forty-third floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows. View of the park. Everything white and chrome and expensive.

She was younger than I expected. Mid-forties. Dark suit. No jewelry except a watch.

She gestured to the chair across from her desk. "Sit."

I sat. Pulled out the folder I'd prepared. Medical records. Lab results. Financial documents. Property transfer. Timeline of Fallon's crises cross-referenced with our canceled plans.

I laid it all out in order. Naomi didn't interrupt. She just read. Her face gave away nothing.

When she finished, she looked up at me.

"This is one of the most comprehensive cases I've seen walk through this door," she said. "You've done my job for me."

Something loosened in my chest. Not relief. Not yet. But something close.

"Can we win?" I asked.

Naomi leaned back in her chair. "Ms. Carpenter, we're not going to win. We're going to eviscerate him."

She opened her laptop. Started typing.

"I'll draft the papers today," she said. "You'll need to sign. After that, it's just a matter of timing."

"How long?"

"Two weeks. Maybe less." She looked at me. "Are you ready?"

I thought about the navy silk dress hanging in my closet. The Northern Lights I'd never see. The fever that broke in an empty room.

I thought about the scar on my right hand. The ten years I'd given. The children I'd never have.

I thought about Maxwell's arm around Fallon. His voice on the phone at two in the morning. The way he'd looked at me when I said I needed him and said *that's not fair.*

"Yes," I said. "I'm ready."

Naomi nodded. "Good. I'll be in touch."

I left her office and took the elevator down. Walked out into the late afternoon sun.

Manhattan moved around me. Taxis and tourists and people living their lives.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my right hand.

Then I went home to wait.
